I was a bit disappointed that it's basically a giant Middy summon. DRG are supposed to kill dragons, why are we using one as a medium again?

That said, I liked the look of the new DRG skill so much more. =D

Because all Dragoons get their powers from Dragons, it's a double edged sword.

Yeah, but I think it's kinda dumb. But then, I've always been a 'strength-of-your-own-back' kinda guy.

Dragoons, especially the Azure Dragoon channel the force of dragons to fight them. They take up the corrupting aspect of dragon's blood to gain their power. 
 

You may even notice a coiling dragon around the dragoon at 5:27, which seems to be an off GCD buff. 

Most likely the questline has further training/mastery of being an Azure Dragoon and may not be things available to the run of the mill dragoon.
