Ul'Dah is a shining jewel of wealth and prosperity.

No one can attest otherwise. If they tried, everyone, I bet even Ishgardians would laugh them off like a town fool. It's a city state paved with gold, emeralds and rubies. Everyone who goes to Ul'Dah seeks to make a fortune. But how do they do it?

Some turn to the jewelers Guild, learn to reap valuable rocks from the ground to supply the goldworks, -- some even take to the violent side of it all and jump into the Gladiatorial Pits. Anyone who already lives in Ul'Dah can see the thirst for coin and easy living in all the tourists and refugees that continually flood to the city. Some, however, make their Gil in a less legal way. It's dangerous to openly talk about such a business in the Tonberry's Lantern, but I'll make the journey. I write about Somnus and the people in the shadows. The ones that produce it. The ones that push it. The ones that give even the poorest man a mighty high before the lowest of the low.

Eorzea is continually set upon by Primals, Garleans - and not even to mention the infighting that seems to flare up every once in awhile - but not many people speak of, or even see the different type of invasion Thanalan has been dealing with for awhile.

It isn't hard to understand how Somnus, or any illegal and harmful drug can flourish in Ul'Dah, let alone Thanalan. As nearly every other conversation about the well being of our City State goes, it boils down to refugees. I won't conceal the fact that this is an opinion piece. Delving into the shady world and dark alleys to get proper facts to publish wouldn't elongate my life by any amount; however, the promise of quick Gil based off pushing illegal substances would make even the proudest refugee, living on the outskirts, think twice.

It's a different type of invasion and one that is being welcomed. As long as larger threats like Garlemald and political squabbles hold the frontlines of the papers - the sickness will go largely unnoticed by most.

And fester even more.
