System Requirements - Therese - 10-06-2010

So one of the problems I've been having with fulling immersing myself into this game so far is the fact that the movement and action speed is a little buggy. It's not unplayable, mind you, but it's like the actions are choppy and it is difficult to get precise movement or a steady flow in action. Yet even a small lag in time can make a big difference between making sure your party is going to survive or not or, in my case, whether your logging attempt ends in success or failure.

So I was wondering: is it them or is it me? If it's me, then that might mean I might have to try to find a better video card for this system... which I wouldn't mind doing, but it's also a possibility that this is common on the server in general. What with Besaid being one of the most populated and all.

Oh, and in case it helps, here are my specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, T6600 @ 2.20 GHz
4 GB RAM
64-bit OS

So far it's been good on FFXI, WoW and a lot of other smaller MMOs, but I do realize FFXIV is a whole new school of fish, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's me. :oops:

Might want to share your GPU specs, too? I mean, hell, I'm on a 32-bit OS with only 3 GB RAM, and I don't seem to be having as much an issue as you are.

... though in fairness, I have a Core 2 Quad @ 2.40 Ghz, but I don't think that's too huge a difference, really.

(I also sport a GeForce GTS 250 for a GPU; which is amusingly not optimal compared to other GPUs out there either, but I run anywhere between 25-50 FPS at most all times when at a respectable 1440x900.)

I "borrowed" my brothers quad core.
Going from a Core 2 duo 2.4 Ghz to a Quad 2.4 ghz

I've seen a noticable difference in interface speed and FPS.

But I am far from experienced with computer stuff~

Re: System Requirements - Therese - 10-06-2010

So I took a look at how to find out my GPU (funny thing, that), and can now say with certainty that I have an NVIDIA GetForce G210M.

Also, how do you know what your FPS is? I know people have said this but I didn't know that was an option...

Re: System Requirements - Freyar - 10-06-2010

There really is only an option to either eyeball it (experienced people can do this), or use something like FRAPS.

Quad Core CPUs are pretty much a necessity to push the game up above 30FPS, All four cores are used.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out actually, Frey (the 'all four cores' part). I forget that between when I got my own computer and present day, game designers finally caught up and started putting all of them to use in more and more games. Laugh Wasn't the case back around mid-2007. So even just a couple Mhz of difference between chip types (or even none at all as is Noelle's example) can be a big difference.

Re: System Requirements - Therese - 10-06-2010

But what does that mean for me? =x That I'd have to get/try a new computer?

You're on a laptop (as evidenced by the 210m), you've got a dual-core CPU and you're very close to minimum on the CPU.

As far as upgrading a laptop, there's not much you can do there. In the short term, the usual "shut down everything, run in fullscreen" applies here.

Re: System Requirements - Therese - 10-06-2010

Huh... is there a way I can do that? The full screen thing... it seems to show up on window mode.

Also it seems I have successfully bullied my brother into letting me check the specs of his tower PC so small win there. Big Grin

Run the configuration tool.
-> General
---> Video Settings
------> Display Mode: Fullscreen

So many new things to learn. Thanks so much. ^_^

With 2.20GHz x 2 CPU and 4GB RAM you're alright. I don't know your GPU but I'm sorry to say it doesn't sound all that great.

At this point the 'easiest' thing to do is just upgrade your video card, if you can. That's easier said than done, but it's possible.

A 210m isn't all that special. It's on par with a low-to-midgrade 9000-series nVidia GPU. As it is in a laptop, that raises additional expense and heat issues.

I didn't say it's easy or cheap. Just easiest... which isn't saying much.

Laptops are not modification-friendly, generally. :/
