To answer your question, maybe. While being on the front line is pretty much a death sentence with how horrible the battle was. I would say it might be possible to retreat, but only if he did so early on. I am reluctant to put a time on how long the battle lasted as there is nothing to really back it up and its safe to not go on what it shows in the cs.
The only people he would be able to remember are the ones that retreated with you. I am actually unsure if lore even lets us remember the dead as I recall in a cutscene with the Grand Company members say that they cannot remember the fallen's names. I am not sure if this is just a cover up for the Warriors of Light or if we cannot even remember the ones who died before Bahamut arose. Any people that survived the fight were likely teleported away, thereby becoming the warriors of light and being erased from peoples memories.Â
So while he could remember the battle and anyone who retreated with him, I would keep the details fuzzy about the others until someone can clarify if we are allowed to remember the fallen.
