History

Gestahl was born in the City-State of Ala Mhigo in 1552 of the Sixth Astral Era in a large family. In the year 1557, the Imperial VIIth legion launched a campaign to capture Ala Mhigo. After months of fighting many citizens knew the end was drawing near. The fighting displaced thousands of Hyur, among them Gestahl, his mother and brother. Only five years old, Gestahl was confused to what was happening, why they were leaving home, why Papa wasn't with them. The mass exodus of refugees became known as the "Third Great Hyuran Migration". It was a brutal journey and no place for a young child. As their mother was a nurse she tended to many of the sick and wounded on the journey, leaving her little time to raise her two sons. Saul, who was only twelve years of age at the time, found himself raising and taking care of his younger brother in the brutal wastelands. A child forced to grow up years ahead of his time.

Salvation was at hand when the refugees spotted the silhouette of the grand city of Ul'dah on the horizon. Only half of the refugees lived to see the destination.

Throughout his childhood, Gestahl would accompany his older brother around the streets of the city, familiarizing himself with all parts of Ul’dah street life. Once Saul reached the age to enlist in the Flames, Gestahl rarely saw his brother. While his brother trained day in and out, Gestahl began to wander off on his own more.

One day he came across a strange robed Elezen who looked to be a few years older than he. With dark grey skin and bright purple hair, it wasn’t hard for him to stick out in a crowd. Gestahl noticed that he seemed lost and offered his assistance. He learned that the Elezen’s name was Arzota, a recently accepted student of the Thaumaturgist Guild. Gestahl, always curious about magic, guided Arzota around Ul’dah, showing him where the Ossuary was located and where the sights and sounds were in the city.

Over the years the two became good friends. While Gestahl was attempting to make some gil in the streets, his friend would be studying within the Ossuary. Gestahl’s interest in magic only grew more and more as he got to hear about his friend’s studies. Arzota even let him borrow his old books to read and to study.

The pressures of the Garlean Empire started to be felt throughout Eozorea. At first it was his brother. Saul was deployed with the Flame in an engineering unit on the front lines.

Next came Arzota. The need to match the Garlean Magitek weapons was met with Eozorean magic, every apprentice able to hurl fire was deployed north.

A vacuum was created in the city when all the able bodied men and women were deployed. Trivial issues began to dominate the political landscape in the city. Month after month Gestahl would watch the sky and see the red moon grow brighter and brighter. With only a handful of Brass Blades around to protect the populace, the Syndicate took on a larger responsibility for security. The city began to crumble from within.

Then came the Calamity.

Ul’dah was left battered, thousands of people went missing. Among those was Gestahl’s mother. With no friends, family, home or hope left he turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the unbearable pain.

He resigned himself to death whenever it would come soonest. He spent days at a time locked in his room. Gestahl was down and out. That was until a curious letter slid itself out of one of Arzota’s old tomes…

..an opportunity to study magic.

Behavior

Gestahl on the exterior comes off as very cold and distant. Having lost many people in his life, he is more-so scared to make friends or acquaintances. Having to mostly rely on himself or his brother growing up, he will rarely ask for help or assistance with anything out of arrogant pride. He intentionally tries to keep people from getting to close to him personally out of fear of future loss.

The persistent few who have broken past his exterior have noted he is actually a very caring and sweet person. Women who have tried to make romantic passes toward Gestahl have met with no luck.

Affiliations

Gestahl is an apprentice of the Tower of Mysterium, a society of Wizards and Magi.

His brother Saul is a fighter in the Ala Mhigo Resistance. He writes Gestahl regularly. Garlean Frumentarii have been made aware of this and have started to secretly observe Gestahl and his friends.

His small trading company our of Limsa Lominsa, VonSchlichtenCo, employs five people and is invovled in metals and material selling.

Rumors

A Crystal

Gestahl has been seen spending much time in the HQ Warehouse used by his free company. Some journeymen that have noticed the apprentice asleep at his desk with old tomes spread about, notes about the crystals of Hydaelyn and a link with the interdimensional rift.

Another rumor is that Gestahl was a paramour against his will for a member of the Syndicate when he was much younger.

It is rumored that VonSchlichtenCo donates a steady supply of parts and goods to the Ala Mhigo Resistance. Smuggling across the border has become much more difficult.

An overheard Conversation at the Mizzenmast Inn revealed Gestahl to be studying something involving turban-clad knights able to enchant their own blades with magic.
