Nicknames: 'Ouro', short for the ancient Highlander mythos of the Ouroboros; 'Man of a Million Masks', for his deceptive and adaptive nature.

Pronunciation: Rye-Ken Ah-Vah-Der

Birthplace: Outskirts of the Black Shroud

Appearance

Height: 5'9".

Weight: 180 ponz.

Body: An athletic build from years of Mercenary Work and Travelling.

Hair: Black.

Skin: Lightly Tanned.

Clothing: Dressing for the occasion, Riken's attire can change drastically from day to day. If there is no work to be done, then do not expect the man to be in anything resembling 'regal' or 'noble,' but rather a simple outfit of rough leather and cloth, designed to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Marks: Riken bears a scar across the right side of his face, falling down to his jaw. Rarely spoken of, he avoids the topic of it's origin with a surprising determination. On the opposite cheek, right below Riken's eye, lays a tattoo of a Chocobo, equally mysterious but carrying a much lighter tone to it's tale.

Timeline:

26th Sun of the 6th Moon, 1552 – Riken is Born to two members of a travelling troupe.

18th Sun of the 9th Moon, 1560 (Age 8) – Begins performing as a junior actor.

9th Sun of the 5th Moon, 1565 (Age 12) – Witnesses the murder of his parents; beginning of mental schism.

22nd Sun of the 5th Moon, 1565 – After almost two weeks tracing the road, Riken arrives at Ul’dah.

13th Sun of the 11th Moon, 1565 (Age 13) – First meeting with Brand.

31st Sun of the 2nd Moon, 1566 – Riken regains his sanity and composure. Sneaking upon an Airship, he travels to Limsa Lominsa. After being caught as a stowaway, Riken becomes a chef’s apprentice under a Highlander named Aelaran who fabricates a story of misunderstanding.

5th Sun of the 7th Moon, 1569 (Age 17) – Riken finds Aelaran beaten and his shop vandalized, and swears to find the culprits.

20th Sun of the 8th Moon, 1569 – After finally finding the men who nearly killed Aelaran, Riken discovers the old man was trafficking slaves for some of the more nefarious sects of local pirate crews.

24th Sun of the 8th Moon, 1569 – Riken treats this as a betrayal, and a failure, his concept of the man he considered family shattered. Begins to think of life as one of his father’s plays, and begins rehearsing multiple personalities in the visage of facades he refers to as ‘masks’.

After making sure Aelaran would never deal in such things again, Riken searches for a new path to follow, in which he would be in control. He finds his solace in the hands of the Arcanists, and begins to study under their tutelage in the art of manipulation that they call strategy.

29th Sun of the 8th Moon, 1571 (Age 19) – Riken joins up with a mercenary group called the Hawks of Zahar'ak, striking out to gain a clearer perspective of Eorzea, and give his restless 'masks' an outlet.

| --- Travels between the city-states honing his skills of observation and tactics. Gains the trust of the group, and proves himself as a capable fighter, eventually becoming a lieutenant and close friend of the Captain.

13th Sun of the 7th Moon, 1576 (Age 24) – Kills the Captain of the Hawks for very abstract, almost poetic, reasons, that would not hold up in a court of law. Pre-emptively slaughters the 14 other men as they sleep.

15th Sun of the 7th Moon, 1576 – After speaking to an impressed ex-employer, Riken begins his new career as an information dealer and jack-of-all-trades, until a mysterious rendezvous begins his story anew…

The Man

Personality: Riken is a man of many names and a collector of many tales. Gentleman and Murderer, Hero and Deceiver. He has been called by a myriad of titles due to his unique nature, but never has he regretted his deeds or his words. In fact, Riken is unflinchingly faithful to his word, at one point in his life nearly losing an arm in order to equal a debt. His psyche is fractured from the loss of his family at a young age, after which he was told that the tragedy was his doing, and his weakness was to blame. Feeling it better to travel his own road, Riken made himself become self-reliant, a welcome virtue still employed in his current employment. When the dusk had settled, Riken had developed a subtle sense of personality disassociation, often having trouble coming to a consensus with the voices in his head. Eventually one of his wills dominated the rest, and this developed towards his own deceptive repertoire. Riken fondly refers to them as his 'masks', refusing their more psychotic nature. In the few years since, he has solidified his sense of self, but still the instability remains, laying beneath the veneer of control.

However not every chapter of this story is so somber. Despite his traumatic past, Riken has come out all the stronger for it. When someone manages to get past the various facades he employs and truly befriend him, then they'll find a kind and selfless companion. He is quick with a joke, and often can be found sporting a solid smile (Even in the more inappropriate of circumstances). Riken finds the silver lining in the world around him because he knows how dark the depths can be, and he does his best to keep that in mind as he goes about his life. His sense of humor may be a bit dark, and perhaps he quotes too much philosophy and poetry, but in the world of deceit you'll find no man more honest.

Activities and Hobbies: Riken is fond of cooking, showing a tender care and demeanor as he crafts his cakes and assorted treats. In addition, Riken is a self-taught carpenter, developed during his mercenary years while his spear was the closest thing to his heart. He finds fishing calming, and is always interested in a game, of any nature. He treats life as a giant play, and this will come to the surface at times as his mood turns.

The Rumor Mill Common Rumors (Easily overheard): 'I heard he's the only survivor of the Hawks of Zahar'ak, those moral-less bastards. They went on a simple job one day, and only Riken came back...' 'Bah, nothing but a manipulating prick, 'dat one. 'E speaks like a riddler, and takes bloody foreva' to get to the point. Waste of breath, if ye ask me...' 'Interesting to a fault. My only interaction with him completely contradicted everything I had heard. And to be honest, that was what sent the chills up my spine...' Moderate Rumors (Moderately difficult to overhear): 'Don't let his attire fool you. He ain't like the normal blokes over at the Guild, with their books and rubbish. Throw a spear in his hands, and he'll pierce you thrice before you know, and take it out, and he's as nimble a boxer I've yet seen.' 'Riken? The man of a million masks, they say.
