  1. You can roleplay just about any if not all jobs with a good enough story. Rather than deciding on a job and then figuring out a story from there, I would decide what kind of story you want to tell and which class/job interests you the most and springboard from there. I think you'll find it a lot more satisfying that way and a lot more interesting.
  2. The Sharlayans specifically avoid the collection of data concerning race in their census. As a result we quite literally do not have a population breakdown of the area by race. Judging from the Endwalker footage, it seems to be highly concentrated of Elezen, Rogayden and Midlander Hyur with a sprinkling of Lalafel, Miqote and then very few Au Ra. That being said, we've seen Sharlayans of every race at this point make an appearance in the storylines except for Hrothgar's and Viera. That doesn't mean there are none, however. We just do not have an example of any. As far as your characters travel route, when it comes to these things I tend to reach for the most rational sounding explanation. Perhaps your character just thought La Noscea sounded more pleasant or perhaps they could get more work there. So they took a quick glance at Thanalan from the docks before hopping onto their connecting ship to Vylbrand. Or perhaps the crew they were traveling with were former (reformed) pirates so they're used to a Limsan route? You could also go with something a little more fun like a storm or shipwreck or some such. It's a long trip from a place like Dalamasca (2 months-ish by boat? Might need a memory check on that one, it's been a bit.), who knows what could happen enroute?
  3. Hello there. It seems like the lore is something that interests you so the best advice I can offer is if you desire to begin roleplaying I would start with a character that is pretty general. Perhaps a conjuror or an archer. This will give you time to just play the game and enjoy the story and absorb the lore without you feeling like there is perhaps some faux paus somewhere. In addition, once you get more comfortable with the lore you'll have a firm foundation to build your character on should you decide to take them in a more daring direction with new knowledge that you have. Character growth like this also adds depth and makes for more interesting interactions. As far as "exclusive" RP, there are groups out there dedicated to Seeker of the Sun or Keeper of the Moon RP. They don't mean to exclude you, they are just attempting to create spaces to engage with that bit of lore of those races. Not everything appeals to everyone though and if you are happy with your Viera then you should stay Viera and I assure you that you have no issues finding roleplay. And yes, they do tend to be very tall and very long lived as a race so I would make sure both those things are appealing as well. Here is a post from the official SE forms about Viera naming conventions should it appeal to you. https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/398565 Being a Viera, perhaps your character has some reason why they left the wood and chose to venture out into the cities? Things to think about. Hope this was helpful and welcome!
  4. You'll ask this question to different people and get a bunch of different answers. Personally, I observe the same things you do and I agree. It's not quite what it used to be. As for what caused it, I think there's a few answers and the following is my opinion from what I have observed. The community is just far more insulated than it used to be. People tend to congregate on private discords and rp in small communities and not venture outside them. The reasons for this vary from they don't feel they need to just they don't feel comfortable for one reason or another. You will see a lot of "walk ups welcome" in notes but the reality is there is a lot of anxiety and fear around random roleplay and walkups to the point where it has borderline ceased to exist in favor of private communities and LFRP posts. Watching party finder is still a good way to find popup rp. Whenever I do a pop up event I advertise via party finder. Watching the RP calendar on this website as well is a for sure method for finding events that suit you. Likely not all of them will but...just don't go to those. For what it's worth, the most walkup rp of quality I have found is located in Ishgard but it's very Ishgard flavored. Could keep an eye out there and see what happens.
  5. I use the following when doing lengthy roleplays in game. Typing in the blank is all well and good for informal chat posts but anything of detail I tend to want to feel uninhibited by the limit as well. https://www.ffxiv-toolkit.com/
  6. FFXIV is not addon friendly like Wow. Most break the Terms of Service and are not facilitated by the developers and operate as plugins into your client. Generally most find the character note to be sufficient to link a profile for their character or include a hook or two for walkups. The addon part might be a bit of a downer but welcome nonetheless!
  7. I've always been of the mind that if you've developed a concept that you're particularly happy with or you have a twist you don't see too often it's best played close to the chest. In my opinion RP is rather boring when everyone's backstory is laid out for everyone to see already. Most people these days include an OOC section of preferences and that should suffice for telegraphing what kind of RP you are/are not looking for.
  8. I do a pop up rp on occasion. Tavern and cage matches. Johan seems like they might appreciate it. Next time around I will see if you're around in game!
  9. What you'll find happens sometimes when folks disagree on something is that they'll agree to just not rp and leave it at that. It looks like that's what happened here. These two parties could also work things out later on OOCly, you never know. Sometimes it's best to not worry about things if you weren't directly involved. It's difficult to tell from the context provided what actually happened but I'll be honest and say disagreements can be common. Whether it be about actual events in RP, how a character reacts to them, actions they take and the perceived 'fairness' of them, lore, etc. What's uncommon is handling them in such a way to where it has a negative impact on an event or story to where it collapses. Generally (hopefully) everyone is mature enough to have mutual respect and find a cordial way to address the situation. In the end, the situation wasn't directly affecting your character so it should be easy enough to just shrug it off and carry on which is what I suggest here. If you're enjoying RP then keep doing it. Just remember it's okay to communicate OOCly about goings on in RP. Before taking an action that can affect another character a courtesy message about what your character is about to do is generally well received. Just be polite, be respectful and have fun.
  10. As far as I'm aware there are 3 or so active and big EU Heavy RP FC's swirling about at the moment on Balmung and several smaller ones. It seems to be doing well from my vantage point.
  11. Something that always helped me was remembering that this community is a lot bigger than you think it might be. No one really cares in the long run if you make that typo or cast a spell while waiting for a post or commit some other sort of faux pas. People are usually so wrapped up in what they are doing they can't pay attention anyway, especially at large events. Scroll and avatar congestion can get so bad in some areas you'd be lucky to get a post seen when you want it to be seen let alone have someone remember "Oh, that's the character that did X." Big events are always 10x more fun with friends anyway, poke someone you know or an FC member and get their character to join yours or use the events as platforms to meet other new people if you respond to LF RPs. If you're on Balmung I will totally wing(wo)man with your character sometime if you want. o/ Messaging people out of the blue gets easier the more you do it. You even start to develop a bit of a habit of it. I was nervous as hell the first time I did it and now years down the road it's just part of the game. Create a easily referenceable profile and link it: "Hey, I saw your post! I think you character might get along with/be a good enemy of/insert hook here for mine! Here is their profile and my Discord. Talk soon hopefully!" Ya there ya go I just blind messaged you. The worst that can happen is someone just doesn't reply or you two don't click and if you don't that's fine. Once you do this over and over and watch other people you begin to realize...Hey. Everyone has this anxiety to some degree. No one wants to be rejected, people get squeamish about putting themselves and their character concepts out there. But by the time I realized that I was already a veteran at the blind response to LF-RPs and starting off posts and DMing events etc. In the end, the people who actually DO end up being the ones who are doing it right. No one will ever say "Wow, you responded to my LF RP weird." or "Gee, that was a nerdy way to start a post." Going on 5 years RPing in FF now and in all my time being proactive I've never seen it and that is the very thing I think people get nervous about. Something something have to fear is fear itself etc. You can do it!
  12. I think everyone has felt frustration for one reason or another when searching for RP contacts. Try making a LF RP or a character wiki here on the site. Describe what your character is about and their interests and such. Providing hooks can also be a great way to get people involved. Make sure you note things like how you like to play and interpret lore and whatnot. When people know a little bit about the character and see how it may or may not fit with their own they can feel more comfortable messaging blind about rp and such things. When the datacenter visiting opens up it will help tons too because then you'll be able to attend Mateus as well as Balmung events to try and make contacts. I'd be willing to set up a friendly RP once the visiting is live, just send me a PM when the patch rolls around.
  13. Additionally, you can make a post about your character in the Making Connections section on these Forums. Sometimes the best FC experiences you can have is just through making organic RP connections. Browse the RP calendar linked above and check out the events. A lot have FC's attached that you might be interested in.
