  1. Kairen Ollerus is looking for someone with any sort of voidsent expertise to hire. A good friend of hers is experiencing a home invasion of the diabolic kind, though it does seem to be mostly benign for the time being. The job is simple; be rid of whatever it is that has turned off the lights in Lute Hyrie's estate, so she doesn't have to continue paying to keep the servants at the local inn. Hello! My friends and I are in need of someone with a particular set of skills, namely one who can identify voidsent, and even better, get rid of the peskier, 'harder to hit with a sword' kind. This will be a single roleplay event, involving hiring someone to take care of a job. With this in mind, while we do appreciate making new connections as much as anyone else, creating a lasting relationship is not the intent here. Should things work out that way, all the better! But don't anticipate this being something regular, or for that matter, extended over several meetings. As the title says, this is, again, meant to be a one-shot meetup. And so, I'd like to invite anyone who thinks their PC can handle the request to express interest! If you have an RPC entry, or a character blog of any sort, I'd appreciate having a link to it, in your signature or otherwise, so I can surmise who may be a good fit (just being a voidsent hunter isn't the only qualification that could help here, but I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers!).
  2. I'm a male that plays mostly female characters. I couldn't say exactly when it had become a habit, but there certainly was a time many years ago in which I'd started to play (almost exclusively) female characters, and I think it had simply become custom for me. Self-perpetuated until I became more comfortable playing women than men. I couldn't say for certain how well I play them, but I'd like to think I've picked up good "habits" and conceptions on how to play the opposite gender better over the years. I've also developed, thankfully, an ability to separate my sexuality from my characters', so I don't experience much trouble with having my female characters pursue relationships with men (IC/OOC or otherwise).
  3. As a result of a series of unfortunate events, my poor Xaela has fallen on dark times emotionally. This, coupled with her already shy nature, has made it hard to find an organic way to get her back towards social situations of her own volition. For this reason I think a stranger would prove the best medium with which to brighten her spirits. I'm looking for a kind/friendly character to roleplay with; someone passing by who can make friends with or otherwise set Najila on the right course. Check out her RPC entry in my signature below for details on the character! Apologies in advance for possibly late replies on the weekdays. Work schedule is killer. :tonberry:
  4. Well, for one, I think it was handled "correctly" in Jessica Jones. In the case of that show it wasn't so much "used" but was an implied oppressive presence that colored the entire season of the show (which mirrors how it affects victims IRL). We never see the act, but still without many words, we come to know it happened. When it is finally spelled out, it's the victim, Jessica, who calls it out to the perpetrator as rape. Unfortunately, it is handled clumsily over, and over, and over again. As are a number of tired tropes directed at mostly female characters in fiction. Fridging comes to mind, and FFXIV is absolutely guilty of that one. People simply get tired of these. Is rape handled clumsily in FFXIV? I don't know. I want to say yes in some cases, but it's hard for me to tell because I'm somewhat close to the subject so any mention of it is glaring to me. I do think it's an oversight on their part that the rape of only women seems to come up. As an aside, I think OP is under the mistaken impression that gender and sexual attraction are inexorably tied to the act of rape. They're not. Rape is essentially about two things: Violence and power. That's it. True enough. I had realized after I posted that there certainly is a proper way to handle rape themes in fiction. I see clearly where my statement could make it seem like i'm not aware of that. I think what I meant to say, more specifically, was that it seemed weird to consider the mention of rape as 'employed easily', and that it was necessarily a bad thing. Is rape as a subject supposed to be explored only in a deeper manner, as a subject that prevails the fiction? Essentially, I don't see why rape can't/shouldn't be something brought up on occasion as existing in the universe as a simpler conversation piece, rather than something deeper.
  5. Female dancers in scantily clad clothing. Courtesans. Wealthy elite with female escorts. Men holding the reigns in Ishgardian marriage setups. A Heavens' Ward comprised solely of men. There's plenty of hints to the presence of imbalanced sexual equality in FFXIV. Just because a woman in the game can gain a high position in the military, or hit as hard as a man doesn't mean they're treated equally in all aspects of life. The 50:50 only means that military is an aspect of life Eorzeans (and abroad) naturally accept as having little need for sexist policy. After all, a woman can fight just as well as a man in Eorzea (as opposed to the natural physiological differences in real life that partially aided in the separation of gender spheres throughout human history), so there's no point historically for men to bar women from participating. It doesn't mean however that the status quo is for women to be considered equal in all aspects. EDIT: I must also say it's quite disturbing that rape as an event in fiction has been turned into some sort of anti-edge fuel source. As if the presence of rape in a story suddenly makes it this brooding (and consequently less valued as a story) tale meant solely to be edgy. How exactly is rape as a subject not "employed easily"? What constitutes proper portrayal of rape? Seriously?
  6. One would think that there being ten Dragoons isn't the Holy Knight's "new protocol". Ten is the directory listing at the Dragoon Office building, with a bunch of names scratched off. Those empty rooms can be refilled. Given that one levequest's text about Dragoon trainees, it's absolutely possible the spots can refilled. Now when it comes to the issue of there still only being 21 "unnamed spots" left open, I don't see any issue whatsoever in players continuing to play Dragoons. The spots can easily be treated as ambiguously as IC time. When it comes to those organizations that don't actually have any sort of effect on the activity, behavior, protocol, etc of other players (even those within the same organization), I don't think numbers even should be treated with absolutes. Does a player portraying one of the 21 unnamed Dragoons really affect anything? This issue, for the Dragoons, could easily be solved by shifting their backstory such that they only recently passed Little Dragoon School and became a fully-fledged Dragoon, taking one of the 21 unnamed spots. A Dragoon in one of these spots doesn't even affect another Dragoon in another spot. What does it affect? Who does it affect? Is there really going to be an instance in which a Dragoon meets 20 other Dragoons and then comes across yet another? The narrative here isn't defined, and so any interactions between two Dragoons is easily warped during other interactions with unrelated parties. Dragoon 1 and 2 interacting with player A has no effect on Dragoon 3 and 4 interacting with player B. They could meet, but even in such a case their personal narrative simply gets shifted. Even if twenty one Dragoons were tied into a single character's narrative, the multiple degrees of separation are so flimsy and unimportant meeting several more Dragoons wouldn't affect jack squat. This being said, so long as the Dragoons are only recently titled through their backstory, I have no problem whatsoever with interacting with Dragoons. I would honestly be surprised if any of my characters met -personally met- 22 different Dragoons. Even if they did, interactions with some would undoubtedly be of the sort they don't remember or care about them, and their "spot" is now just as nameless as before, free to be filled by another Dragoon.
  7. I don't think the tag is in any way necessary for roleplayers engaging in roleplay. No one is obligated to use it, much like you're not obligated to use /busy or /afk. Rather, I think that using it when not roleplaying is what causes confusion or defeats the purpose of the tag. Like I said, it seems best applied when you accept walk-ups/are IC rather than as a "mentor-esque" label. When it comes to the argument that it allows people to know that, in fact, "you're actually a roleplayer" my thought process is this: By utilizing the rp tag as a label of your status as a roleplayer, you've effectively changed the location of your search info rp tag and lost the ability to indicate when you're IC, which is a far more important I think. Which would you rather get? A more immediate presence of your search info "Roleplayer" or a way to tell everyone you're available for walk ups, negating the need for anyone to /tell you?
  8. Now, before I proceed I'd like to preface this by saying that the below is my opinion and that this thread is as much a thread for discussion on the subject as it is me speaking to the roleplaying community. If you have an opinion on the matter too, I'd love to hear it. With the advent of FFXIV 3.4, we have attained the glorious ability to put an "Rp" icon next to our characters in game, similar in effect to an afk or busy status. This is great for a number of reasons, all of which I'm quite sure the community is aware of. However, I do believe that a large number of people are using it incorrectly. Prior to 3.4 roleplayers had to rely on their search info to indicate they roleplay, as well as information on their character if they chose to include it. Finding out if someone roleplayed, if they preferred tells, etc, required looking up their search info. While the 3.4 Rp icon allows us to eliminate a portion of this, we will still inevitably need to use search info to display character information. Day 2 into 3.4's existence and I'm already seeing a habit of players that I don't think utilizes the new Rp icon effectively. In many cases, roleplayers will set their status to roleplay even if they are not currently engaging in roleplay, or are not (visibly) ready for roleplay. I am of the strong opinion that this is improper use of the status icon and does nothing to help fellow roleplayers glean any information on when they can roleplay with you, or if you are roleplaying. I believe that the Rp status is best used to indicate one is currently roleplaying (or is prepared to do so and waiting) and that walks ups are permissible. Consider the following situations: Situation A) Two roleplayers currently have their roleplay status turned on and are seeking roleplay. Should player 1 wish to engage in rp with player 2, and is unsure if they allow walk-ups, they need only look at their status symbol. Since it is on, they already understand the agreement. There is nothing questionable about the player's assumptions. Situation B) One roleplayer has their roleplay status on but is not ready or wanting of rp at the current moment. Another roleplayer sees this status and may assume they are ready for roleplay. If they are not, then awkwardness ensues. If the second player doesn't make the assumptions and looks at their search info, then the purpose of the rp status symbol has been completely defeated. Situation C) A group of roleplayers are currently engaged in some sort of private event. They are not ready or wanting of walk ups, so they leave rp status off. Another player in the area will notice this lack of rp status, and understand they are not wanted in the event. It is for this reason that I plead with the Rp community to USE THIS NEW GIFT WISELY. Use it only when you are: 1) At your keyboard 2) Prepared and awaiting roleplay 3) Are accepting of potential walk ups Any other use helps no one or otherwise defeats the purpose of having the status symbol in the first place. Much like the afk symbol is meant to indicate you are in a current state, so to is the rp symbol meant to indicate your current state, not your being a roleplayer. Any opinions, discussion are most welcome.
  9. Funnily enough, I've now had two extensive conversations about the speculative biology of Au Ra horns and their sense of hearing. I'm also really excited to see if any of the theories the conversation group has had turn out to be the case!
  10. Our free company has a voidsent that needs slaying! Some aspects of our company are a bit secretive so me being able to have a character of mine hire you hinges on their allowing me to do so. I'll converse with them on the topic and get back to you if there's availability. I'd love to get some people from outside our circle of FC's to interact with! If it goes through it'll likely be a scheduled event. Are you open to having a set-date for this sort of thing?
  11. Kairen Ollerus: Garlean sextuple agent suffers from Stockholm Syndrome with an entire nation. Najila El'azah: Ambiguously racist Halonic priest raises orphaned Xaela and teaches her to play music where nobody has to see her.
  12. My recollection of Allagan name-drops throughout the MSQ and side-quests is extremely spotty, though I of course do recall Xande and Amon. My question to anyone that can help is; is there any sort of convention to Allagan names? Perhaps a theme on which they're based?
  13. Figuring out how to make a control-switching card (the FLAVOR) almost always work in the owner's favor was tough. Fine-tuning the wording and getting rid of unnecessary abilities and make it function the same was a nightmare. Dx
