Hi everyone,

Ever since I came up with my character, I've kept some of the details of her background somewhat vague. I did this both because I didn't know much about the plot and also so that I'd have some freedom to adjust the background depending on how I actually roleplayed Cass, who ended up being slightly different from what I'd originally planned.

Now I'm finally getting around to dotting the i's and crossing the t's, because I want to start getting into the character's background ICly. Most of the things I've decided on are completely independent of the plot, so there are no problems there, but there's one thing in particular that I would like to know more about in order to flesh out some of the details.

I'm talking about the Garlean invasion of the Black Shroud during 1.0. All I seem to be able to ascertain from the resources I've found is that the Garleans invaded and destroyed Sylph settlements / killed Sylphs. Is that the extent of it? Did they only attack Sylphs? Was the rest of the Shroud affected? Did they attack Gridania?

I know it's kind of a specific question and I'm sorry for the trouble, but I haven't found much on this subject and I thought someone here might know more. Any additional information on this might be helpful for me to determine what happened to my character and how it happened, hence my questions. Thank you. Big Grin
I believe a castrum was also built, but from the parts of 1.0 I played, they never made a direct attack on the city. The intent was likely to try to take over Gridania and the Shroud, but they would have needed sufficient resources to wipe out the Elementals and Gridanian forces.

...and oh man were they annoying when you had to save the Sylph seedlings. I /hated/ that quest because my path companion was a derp and I was a botanist.
Haha, thanks for the reply. ^^
The Garlean forces never really make it out of the Sylphlands due in part because of the player character. We know they at least got far enough to setup Castrum Oriens, but other than a single quest that has you go out and kill a few spies this place is never mentioned and it's completely inaccessible. They do still have a fairly strong presence in the Sylphlands however, with a small area filled with nothing but Ochu and Garlean troops, and at least 2-3 fates in the area involving them.

With Gyr Abania right on the other side of the East Shroud, I don't think they will be letting up anytime soon since they can pretty much send endless amounts of troops from Ala Mhigo through there.
Thanks Ashren, that helps a lot. Smile
Garleans have a pretty strong hatred of beastmen and their "Eikons." As was already said, the Garleans pushed a few times into the Shroud, attacking the Sylphlands, setting up Castrum Oriens during the aftermath of the Calamity, and sending small scouting parties to various parts of the Shroud. As the Shroud borders Gyr Abania to the East, a region now controlled by Garlemald, Gridania is the frontline of defense against Garlean invasion.

Shortly after the formation of the Grand Companies, the Garleans did several bombardment runs on the Shroud with their Juggernauts, trying to set the Wood ablaze and sick the Greenwrath upon the Gridanians. See video below:

Hope this helps! ^^

This is off topic but I hate seeing old 1.0 cutscenes because it always makes me sad how good they were compared to what we have now. The animations and effects they had were top notch.
One thing to note is that in 1.0 we had them attacking at all the city state territories, not just the Shroud.  Also the only Castrum erected in 1.0 was in Mor Dhona. Castrum Novum.
Thank you all so much for the help, this gives me a good idea of how to fit my character's background into that particular place and time. Big Grin
