Hello Hydaelyn Roleplayers! My name is Gareth Evershield, and I'm a totally new player to FFXIV as of about 3 days ago. After hearing some talk from some nerdy co-workers of mine, I was curious to take a peek at the game, especially with my downtime from World of Warcraft seemingly increasing over the past few weeks. With little else to do in WoW nowadays but RP, I wanted to try something new, and so far, FFXIV has yet to disappoint ('cept dat voice acting... Ouch.) I've managed to slug my character into Balmung, as minor research proved it was the biggest server for Roleplay. Running around Ul'dah, I can see why.

I've spent most of my game time getting a feel for the game, the lore, and the environment. At hitting level 16, and getting a set of armor that doesn't make me look like I'm in underwear or wearing cooking clothes, I think I'm ready to dip my toes into the RP community of FFXIV. But before I do that, I'm still not 100% sure on things with my character, and have a few questions.

First and foremost, I'm working with a trial account. Does this hamper any interactions with players, beyond normal game capabilities (such as trading, which I know I can't do.)? Just want to make sure I can see everything a person says to me, and vice versa.

Hyurs generally come from where? Starting as a Gladiator, I'm in Ul'dah, which is apparently Lalafell dominant, so I don't have a starting point for Gareth, though his idea is much the same as my characters often go. Young adult, humble beginnings in a small village, honor-bound and polite, jokingly with friends and comrades, a militant-like duty to strive for peace. Dreams of being a true Paladin, yada yada yada. I really just need a place for his origins to take place from. A small village for him to call a birth home, but beyond that, he's good to go.

The best places for Roleplay? The cities are bustling, but one place may be more popular than another.

RP style is pretty wide-range, but the question comes with what the server's range covers. Is there a lot of adventure/battle RP, or just stand around and explain my lifestory/relationship building RP? I've seen both dominate seperate servers, one focusing on battle, the other more on politics, and if there is a distinct flavor FFXIV, or more specifally, Balmung has.

Regarding Free Companies, are there any of these --what I am assuming is a correlation to WoW's guilds-- that are military-based? My characters often start with little to no knowledge of fighting, and if I can latch onto a FC that often does battle, trainings, and adventures would be a perfect fit for Gareth. Though I am searching for FCs that are more well known, well-structured and active in the RP community, I'm no stranger to helping an underdog get their feet on the ground either.

Are there any good armor sets within level 30 that can easily portray a bare-bones adventurer? I obtained the full bronze armor set, and that looks pretty good as a start, and I save my armor as I go along, in case I ever have need of a leather diaper.

And finally... Any Lalafell RPers out there, is it hard to be taken seriously sometimes?! I have a hard time being moved by Lalafells, beyond thinking they're really cute!

I think that covers any questions I initially have. Hopefully I can get something going soon, I'd definitely love to experience the RP in this game before my trial runs out. However, I'll most likely give FFXIV a few additional weeks of time if something REALLY grabs my attention, and Roleplay is often that very thing.

Thank you for your time in engaging the amazing experience of RP, no matter what game or platform you do it on! Stay Fantastic, Friends!

Yo he could be a great fit to hang out with Solis! Nice to meet ya!
Trial accounts means you can't answer whispers (but you can receive them), it also means you can't join Free Companies. You CAN join linkshells though, so that can be a workaround to the whispers if you find one to join. Linkshells are essentially glorified chat channels.

Welcome to! Smile
To answer a few of your questions, Hyur are very spread out so thats not a problem.

In Ul'dah the Quick Sand where momodi is, thats a good rp hub and hot spot.

The Grand companies which you join at 20 are the militarist, and free companies are more free form. Though I would suggest looking up Erik Mynheir or Cliodhna. They run the Red Wings, which is a Ul'dahn Military unit.
Hello there, welcome! Big Grin There are a lot of military-themed FC's around if you'd like to browse the linkshell hall. Red Wings is a great suggestion! You're also welcome to check out Harbingers of Dawn. As for lalafells, there are lalafells who are taken seriously and/or people who take lalafells seriously. Tongue
Welcome. Unsung Heroes might be what your looking for. We do quite a bit of classes, training, adventure rp and story-arcs. If you are interested our site is www.unsungheroescommunity.enjin.com ! If you got any questions about us, I'm happy to help!

Points to Reiner for spreading the word, and Faye for being a sweety.

Anyway how are you doing man, as stated above the Red Wings offer both military RP and help ooc in leveling and content. We do a weekly/biweekly mini event that is a rule/point based mission somewhere. We are lore friendly, but also flexible. We have a few writer and lore pros on board to help you if you want it in crafting your character. Always growing we are currently moving from a special ops unit (seal team 6) to a more overall military unit (82nd Airborne). As such we offer many roles open to be used, you wanna do something as a soldier we will find a way for you to do it. We have no race restrictions, even to Au Ra, and have very simple rules of conduct. Friendly and helpful we can if nothing else give you and any new player a good start.

A few of us at lastnights event, saved a few hostages from some crazed bandits and defused a bomb.

Welcome to Eorzea and the RPC!

Hyur originally migrated to Eorzea 1000 years ago in three great migratory waves and their arrival sparked massive race wars across the areas they attempted to colonize. Nowadays, they have become (per lore) the most populous race of man in Eorzea. So, you could feasibly have your Hyur be from anywhere.

If you're wanting to stay with a history in Ul'dah and Thanalan region, there are a few villages/hamlets you could claim to be from. The Silver Bazaar in western Thanalan is a small fishing village which, prior to the Calamity, was populated largely by Ala Mhigan refugees. However, large fishing conglomerates and Ul'dah big consortiums have dried up the settlement and most of the residents have been forced to leave the village into Ala Mhigan slums like Stonesthrow and Lost Hope. Currently, Ul'dahn developers are seeking to purchase the remaining rights to the village to raze it to the ground to make way for mansions and plantations for Ul'dah's elite nobility.

In eastern Thanalan you have the Golden Bazaar. This once thriving merchant village lies on the Royal Allagan Sunway, a highway facilitating trade between Ul'dah and Gridania. However, with the rise of settlements such as Drybone and the Highbridge in the time since the Calamity, the village has seen better days. Though recently discovered mythril deposits by Amajina & Sons Mineral Concern may help return life to the village.

There's also Vesper and Crescent Cove, two fishing/port towns on western Thanalan's coast. While much of the once-prosperous fishing is no more, these nearby towns still facilitate travel between the Aldenard mainland and the island of Vylbrand to the west.

If your character is Ala Mhigan in origin, you may consider a history with Little Ala Mhigo, a refugee establishment in the southern reaches of Thanalan populated by Ala Mhigans who fled south after the fall of Ala Mhigo to the Garlean Empire 20 years ago.

Hope this helps! ^^ Lemme know if you need any lore help in the future or wanna know more about gladiator lore for your character!
If you have any questions about Lalafells being taken seriously, I guess you would have to talk to the people I've RP'd with. As a lalafell, I can't tell if Kage is taken seriously. You would have to ask people.
Thank you guys for all your answers, recommendations, and offers of RP! I just bought the full version of the game to make sure no issues between interaction occur. Thank you all again for your responses, I hope to RP with you all soon!
Pffft toes.. Cannon Ball!

Far as outfits go, there are some armor sets that can be crafted. There is a dungeon set that looks pretty good and kind of squire like if you're hoping for chainmail. Foestriker Tabard (and set)

There's also a lot of crafters and crafted gear out there. It's nice to be able to try on things from the market board. Dyes, then glamours to make most gear look like others. Once you hit 50 the gil will be a lot easier to obtain and build up a wardrobe from.

Also this might help with some other side quest unlocks and things.

Welcome!
With two of my characters being Lalafell and having hung around Lalafell, you can definitely be taken seriously. It's just how you approach it - though people seem to lean heavily to one side or another (super srs lala vs. supercute lala). It's not without precedent, either. As you go through the MSQ, you'll see a lot of Lalafell do some pretty serious stuff. Stuff that I will not spoil for you, of course.

You'll still get pet and hugged randomly, but that is the curse (or blessing) of playing the cutesy class.

The rare occasions Jancis has had to hug Sir Gegenji.. she's relied on his strength. I also make it a point that when Jancis is looking at a lalafel, I don't write it as "looks down at". token trivia..

Seriously though he's probably one of the most knight-like people out there.
