While I'm waiting for a slot on Balmung to open, I figure I might as well post my character idea.  I haven't thought up a name yet, but I did think up part of a backstory.
My character idea is a male Miqo'te Keeper of the Moon, native to Limsa Lominsa.  His mother was an arcanist at Mealvaan's Gate...until one day she went to sea to investigate a vessel and never came back.  His sister had moved to Gridania during the late Sixth Astral Era to train in the art of conjury, but that art wasn't enough to keep her from dying at Carteneau.

Whereas both his mother and sister were gifted in the magical arts, my character is definitely not.  He couldn't cast a simple Ruin or Stone spell to save his own life.  He, however, is gifted in the art of cooking...

Classes I plan on using RP-wise: CUL (obviously), ROG (defending himself with kitchen knives), possibly others depending on how RP goes with him. Oh, and I've never played CUL or ROG before (I mostly play SMN) so this should be fun!
The best thing about this is that there are some higher-level Ninja weapons that are basically steak and butcher knives.

I will be looking forward to this.
I hereby offer this character concept my official seal of approval.

DATED: September 2, 2015.

((Seriously, I love the culinary-rogue failure mage concept).
Thanks!  My main will still be my SMN on Leviathan, but I am really looking forward to RPing again!
If you progressed into Ninja, you could use Katon for AOE cooking-implement attack!

In all seriousness though, it sounds like a fun character. If it were me, I'd edge his personality/demeanor slightly towards "high-strung". It suits an ambitious chef who won't abide mediocrity when it comes to his craft, and would give you an excuse to whip out the culinary arsenal at inappropriate moments if he gets surprised or scared.

Now that I think about it, I may have just described one of the NPCs from the CUL questline... but that guy was awesome, and one of the more memorable guild-understudies, so nothing wrong with borrowing if you like him.

Like I said, I've never played CUL, so I don't know that character.  I did, however, take some inspiration from some of the characters in Phantasy Star Universe (amazing game, but I would suggest playing it on PS2 or 360 instead of PC) and some inspiration from my own past.

EDIT: Given that Balmung is so hard to get into, I might end up rolling on Gilgamesh instead, depending on if and when Balmung opens.
This sounds like a fun character. It seems the OP is good at cooking up interesting character concepts.Tongue (I couldn't resist)

I can confirm Balmung already has an Ethan Waber. Wink

I know Gilgamesh has a sizable community for RP, and there are smaller alternatives on Sargatanas, Siren, Faerie, and possibly others. FWIW.

For the inspiration, I was actually thinking more along the lines of Karen as opposed to Ethan.  Now all I need is to think up a name for the character...
Update: I made my character, Tyll'a Starr, on Shiva server, and I'm planning on transferring to Balmung as soon as the three-day waiting period is up.  I decided to start him as PGL since ROG isn't a possible starting class and PGL is needed for a potential NIN anyway; also, I've done the Limsa starting quests to death and haven't touched the Ul'dah ones yet.

Looking forward to RPing with you!
When you're around on Balmung, post again so that we can come find you.

Well, it looks like the transfer will have to wait until SE opens up free transfers off Shiva.  That should be soon, and when that happens, I'll let you know!
Well, the transfer went through.  When I'm not busy with RL, I'll get back to leveling my character!
I SHALL COOK YOU A MIGHTY PLATE OF FAILURE
I am new to ffxiv, but I love your character! Sounds like someone really fun to RP with Smile However, the server you joinned is not the temporary one I chose until Balmung is open again, but I hope to see you on the forums! I will be posting a character idea to for a 'seal of approval' soon as well. Smile
