Hello everyone! I'm very new here, having just started looking around yesterday. (Or maybe the day before?) It's very nice to meet you all! Smile

I haven't gotten into RPing in FFXIVyet, but I would love to. I don't even have a character on Balmung yet, which I'm nervous about being able to do. Silly character lock. I haven't done a single bit of RP in this game at all, so I don't know the controls or any emote tricks, so I would love to be taught how to RP in FFXIV. I have RPed in MMO's and on forums before, so I'm not a complete newb. Though it has been a few years since I did any serious roleplaying. I'm not a paragraph roleplayer, I actually get super intimidated by people who can do that. =/

I don't know what to make for acharacter yet. Is there a good place to really read up on the lore other than the very brief race overview in the character creation screen? xP Are there any things I should avoid when making a character? Other than making a Mary Sue or a character who's related to a lore important character, I know better than that!

Any help would be much appreciated, andeven just a quick hi is nice to see! I'd love to make friends with people here and really get into the community, but don't be surprised if I am a bit quiet sometimes. I'm actually pretty shy. Thanks for reading!
Welcome!

The first thing to be aware of is in game, special emotes are /em unlike every other program I've ever used.

Also, there is a patch update (3.15) coming 12/15, so 12/16 might be a good day to try and get on Balmung if you are wanting to try the right after maintenance route. If I recall correctly, the server is supposed to come back up at 3:00 am PST.

If you start to figure out a character, I'd be happy to RP with you, even to help you figure out more about the character. I have three you can choose from Smile
Welcome to the RPC! *confetti*

I've been playing for about two months now, so I'm pretty new too. The advice my friends gave me that I completely ignored was to hit level 50 after running through the main story quests before you start RPing.

I looked on the race pages on the RPC wiki (they're on the sidebar!) and read up on the races. Then I just avoided dealing with lore as much as I possible could until I got around to brushing up on the FF Wiki! This was obviously a great idea.

If you'd like, I can help you flesh out a character and all that good stuff. And I'm open to RP on here or in-game when you get onto Balmung! Heart
Welcome to the server!

As far as good lore resources goes there is the RP Discussion area here where most any question seems to be able to find an answer (or might already have)

There is also the official Lore forum at http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/491-Lore

If you see me or any of the Zhwan siblings about, we're usually in character doing whatever.  Feel free to poke at us.

Welcome to Eorzea and the RPC! The above is an ever-expanding compilation of lore related to the races including their interbreeding, history, origins, and naming conventions. Finding lore for this game can be rather difficult until you know where to look because of its spread out nature so I try to be a helpful resource. Feel free to ask in this thread or in the RP Discussions section if you have any specific lore questions! ^^
Hello there, welcome to the RPC! Big Grin Like everyone said, the wiki and forums here are probably the best place you can find any lore, along with the official FFXIV website and forums!
Thank you so much! You've all been very helpful. Big Grin

Oh, I forgot to ask another question. Is there an RP add on I should get? Like MRP?

Just the post I was going to Link. It's been a huge help.

The problem with a lot of lore is that too much of it is just bits and pieces gleaned from quests, usually easy to miss side ones.

I actually went through the whole MSQ on another server before I started RPing and even then there are still a lot of lore that I just don't know. But that's ok... because.. do YOU know the entirety of human history? Noe. So neither should your character be expected to know every little detail.

Best place to start is from your race because that IS something your character should know. Learn about how they think and what they do, but don't let that limit you. Exceptions to the rules do exist, but the lore is a good frame work to start with.  Take Nef... She's more personable than the 'norm' for Keepers of the Moon, but when you look at her core personality she's still very much like the rest of her clan.

How you flesh out your character really varies from player to player. Some have to just jump in the RP and discover their character as they go along. Me... I found this huge character sheet that was like a questionnaire to answer from my character's POV. Doing that made me really think about her and get into her headspace, which is actually quite different from my own. And don't feel like you have to have every single aspect of your character written in stone. There's huge parts of Nef (and her siblings for that matter) that are still blank and we just fill in the blanks as we go along. Makes for more dynamic RP that way. When you need to fill in that blank you can stop and ask yourself "Hey, how can i use this to make a better plot?" Take a situation and tweek it to make things more interesting.

If you have any specific questions always feel free to ask in the character workshop forum!

Nope, since I think modding is sorta a grey area, not to mention those playing on consoles can't mod. I really wish there was a log parser to save RP scenes but.. oh well....
I had an idea to play a Raen Au Ra character from a small mountain village who doesn't know much about the world. She would basically be a country bumpkin, more or less who has heard wild tales and thinks many wrong things about the world. (Example would be like Ul'dah has golden streets and is quite literally made of jewels. (Jewel of the Desert).) I'm still trying to learn about the lore, and I think this may help that as well as be fun. Would this idea work? Or is it overdone and cliche? Also, what should I look into for things my character would for sure know? I did already read up on Doma and Othard.

Oh and Nefzen, thank you! That was really helpful. Smile I can sometimes get a little too serious about things. xD
Welcome!
