I kept drawing blanks coming up with Cavris' character so I rolled another you might have seen running around instead. Meet Virril Verai(the name reminded me of the word squirrel and I liked it. I know its not a Miqo'te name, but that'll be explained eventually in here). I've been digging through quests and the wiki to get my facts straight so if somethings against lore or you have some constructive criticism just let me know, I'm always open to input. Tonberry

Oh, and here's a photo since he won't be describing his looks.

Waves clashed against the hull of the ship repeatedly as I listened to the chatter of the gulls above. The smell of the ocean was and always will be warm and inviting to me. Salty too, but I don't mind. The sky was a clear blue dotted with white clouds overhead. No rain for now, but there was something else. Ir was sudden and almost as if the sky was falling, a drop of white came straight down like a poopy meteor hitting Byrflr's shoulder. With a brisk, dirty tongue he cursed the birds very being, promising to make it 'rue the day'. I couldn't help but laugh, trying to stifle it but to no avail. Laughing at his expense usually ended up with a shiv in the gut, but he always cut me some slack. The Twelve only knows why... He gave me a look of warning before slowly walking off, like he could walk off that stain on his pride, because Byrflr was indeed a prideful man. So prideful, in fact, that I seemed to insult him every time I tried to pronounce his name. He eventually settled on me calling him Burflur. At least, thats how I pronounce it. Saying it that way always produces a glimmer in his eye. Like he wants to smile at me like I'm an old friend but it's always cut short. He hides it well though, because the glimmer is gone in seconds and he's back to his stoic self.

It suddenly dawned on me that I hadn't started the morning routine yet. Rajal must have been reading my mind, because he wasn't hesitant to let me know. “Virril!” He hissed. “It has yet to bring us luck this day!” I darted over to the Ixal, standing a bit higher than his waist. Head of the ship, Rajal was big, stern, and strict. Often times bordering on downright cruel. We may have been small time pirates but he always seemed like he could take on much more. I learned not to question it. I was grateful, in fact. We've had to cut down more than a few sailors just trying to protect the cargo and I didn't like doing it. I always felt sick to my stomach each time. He was quick about it though. Wasted no time in finishing it and never let the crew loose on them. Just take what we can, leave them something to survive on.

“Virril!!!” Another snap from the captain brought me back from my daydreaming. I headed over to the ladder for the crows nest, catching some looks along the way. The look people give you when they dont think much of you. You know the one. Despite being 26, the others still saw me as young, inexperienced, and childish. I would offer my hand only to be told “This is a job for a real man!” Or try to speak to the others only to have them spit in my face. Metaphorically of course. It stung everytime I saw that judgment in their eyes but it didn't matter. Nothing could be done about it, so no sense in crying. There was however Lorwys and Davor. 'Davor Naor!' He always reminds me with a smile. Davor was a plainsfolk with golden blonde hair and a goatee to top it off.... Or bottom it off, whatever. He was always on the cheery side, but it was muddled down with a troublemakers attitude. I liked that about him. Always looking for trouble, but when it got bad, or serious, he would show a different side. More compassionate. Just don't point it out unless you want whatever he's drinking dumped out on your crotch. Then he'll laugh and go: “ey everyone, looky here who done pissed 'imself!”

5 times.

He's done it five times to me, and three times were just for fun. I just want to smack the crap out of him sometimes.

Lorwys on the other hand was a 'Sea Wolf' and seemed to act the part, at least to me. I didn't really know much about anyones culture, let alone my own. All I knew is that I am a 'Keeper of the Moon'....... Whatever the hell that means. But Lorwys was like Byrflr. Prideful. Stoic. But, unlike him she seemed to care in her own strange way. Like an estranged mother would to kids that aren't hers. She had dark blue eyes and snow white hair that seemed to shine like silver in the sun. I've tried multiple times to get her to talk but I've come to learn it's just not her way. She likes the silence. And the sound of the ocean, I think. I really don't know what I would have done without her here. Back when I first ended up here...... She was the one that showed me the ropes. Treated me.... Like kin, if I dare say it.

“VIRRIL!!!!!!!”

I realized I had been standing there for near a good minute with my hand clutching the wooden ladder that was made to allow access to the crows nest. I felt a prick on my hand and knew it was a splinter. 'Stupid old wood.' I grunted to myself. Ignoring it I began to climb, some of the rungs moving loosely as I grabbed them. Reaching the top, I wasted no time in turning around and standing at attention like a soldier. “Ready sir!” My arms crossed my chest like I was going in a grave, standing stiffly as the others formed a circle down below. I prayed that we didnt hit a big wave, causing me to come tumbling down, right into the middle of their circle and into the arms of.... Well, you get the picture. Maybe that was part of his little ritual. To see if I would fall. That would certainly be a sign of bad luck.

'......... Am I the albatross?'

“Begin!” Rajal snapped. So we did, all of us at once reciting the Sailor's Requiem.

'I am the waves that bear.

I am the wind that guides.

I am the evening stars.

I am the morning sky.

I am born of the sea, and there shall I die.'

We all stood silent for a moment before returning to our duties. Rajal was a superstitious captain and insisted we do it every day or “Nymeia will finally catch up to us.” As he put it. I asked him about it once.

---
“Why would Nymeia 'catch up to us'? Doesn't she control fate? That would mean-”

He chuckled and stared out at sea smugly. “What has it been reciting every morn'?”

“The Sailor's Requiem.”

“Yessss.....” He said, dragging it on with a hand up, palm stretched out as if expecting a physical response to fit in his hand. I must've given him a stupid look because he just sighed instead of waiting. “I am born of the sea, and there shall I die!” He recited with irritation. “We shall die out here one day. Let it not be today.”

With that he turned to leave. He knew I had more questions but didn't care to answer them. I couldn't help but feel like it was because I would untangle his funky logic.

Watching everyone go back to work, I plopped down in the Nest, occasionally popping my head over the side to check for anything unexpected coming our way. He never noticed when I slacked off. I layed down in my little bed. And my blanket. 'Mothers blanket...' I thought to myself with a sigh. It was a uniform deep sea blue with patches of whatever was at hand to mend it. It was itchy and uncomfortable, but it was mine. The Crows nest was of decent enough size, allowing me to sleep up there. Assuming I slept crooked. I always did though. Not at first, but now I cant sleep any other way. There was a tap atop the cover of my Nest followed by two more. There was a pause and then pouring rain. “By the Twelve! What do I even keep you around for Virril!"

“Sorry sir!” I apologized. Again. I staggered to climb to my feet, looking ahead and down below. “Storms abrewin' sir!” I shouted feebly. An uproarious laughter followed as Rajal gave me the 'I'm going to kill you' look. I couldn't decide whether to smile or apologize again.

'It's going to be another long day...'
