Hey folks, been lurking around and prowling the forums for the past bit and I've decided to finally make this post. I had planned on giving the RPC here a try a few years back, so luckily I've had a character waiting on Balmung for a long while and I get to avoid transfer fees. I'm in the process of leveling up/re-learning the game since I last played about a week after the Golden Saucer came out.

I'm also trying to figure out exactly what type of character I want to play, so I've been trying to look up Keeper lore and I've found a bit.. I might just make a former member of Pawah's gang (Side note: I'm still trying to figure out.. was she a member of the Coeurlclaw? The mobs that were with her were named such. I've searched for answers and come up with next to nothing.)

Anyway, I'm definitely new to MMO RPing, but I've been playing tabletop RPGs for years, to go along with my lengthy time RPing on Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2. So I'd like to think I'm at least acceptable. Tongue

How much importance do people generally place on class/levels? Should I grind for gil so I can buy up the appearance items I want? I'm a bad and I don't know how to glamour system (I think I need to hit 50 first anyway for that?)

That's about all I can think of for the moment, thanks in advance for any help! Oh, also Rhela Moshroca is my character, feel free to say hi whenever I'm online.
Welcome aboard!

As for levels, it's not my experience that people really put any emphasis on levels. Level 15 is good to reach for a start since you can then take the airships to the three ARR city states (so not Ishgard) and that gives you more possibilities in terms of where to be.

There's quite a lot of glamour items at level 1 (you don't have to glamour them, the glamour system just lets your pve gear look the way you want it to), as well as the usual gear can be mixed and matched into things (You can also get gear from the Grand Company you pick) that look decent. Some of them cost a fortune and others are cheap - it may be worth it to save up some gil for the right things. Alternatively feel free to shoot me a /tell in-game, I can craft pretty much everything so I might be able to help you out.

Have fun o/
Ooooh, another NeverWinter Nights veteran? Well, welcome back to Balmung! Thumbsup

I think Maril hit the high points here already, but if you're set on playing a Miqo'te out in the wilderness, then I do have one recommendation for you over here, which may be worth a shot for your time:

Hope to see ya around!

GLORY TO SHAR, LONG MAY WE DRINK OF THE WELL OF OBLIVION

*cough cough*
You do need to hit some arbitrary level marker to unlock the ability to Glamour, yes, which I believe is 50. However, it's mostly just allowing you to put a look you like on another set of gear as Maril mentioned. Also as she has already brought up, there's plenty of low-level equipment that is intended for this purpose that you can just... wear if you're RPing - unless you're dealing with an RP situation where you would also want to be highly geared for whatever reason (RPing an IC run through a dungeon, for example).

As you level, though, you'll start to get access to more and more gear that can be used for said outfits - so leveling might be beneficiary simply for that. Especially if you want to wear some of the job-specific equipment for your look - which is available at 50 and 60. Or there might just be various equipment that don't have a lower-level variant that you can use. Glamour is the true endgame indeed.

Also, a lot of stuff is gated behind progress. So if you want to RP as one of the Heavensward jobs or in one of those areas, or even just having access to your own personal apartment to decorate for RP purposes... levels might be required. For starting out, though, Maril again has the right of it that level 15-20 is probably a good spot to get to due to gaining access to the three citystates and also has you around the proper level for any holiday events for extra swag.
Thanks for the tips and greetings folks! Really do appreciate it.

Is there a place I can go to look at all the gear appearances in the game? Or do I just have to hope everything is on the market board and try it on? ..also, is there a way to try on multiple items at once? I found the button to show my current gear, but that doesn't help when I'm trying to play dress up. Tongue ..it's hard to commit to something when I don't know my options.

Hello and welcome to the FF14 MMORP world :D Looking for nice glamour nowadays is honestly not that hard anymore thanks to the feature FF14 has which is called Palace of the Dead where you can grind for both levels and hope for chests with gives you random drops that are both meh and awesome! You can also sell non-glamour items to... wait for it... BUY MORE GLAMOUR ITEMS! :D

If you just want to have a feel with the RP, a quick visit to Quicksand would always help xD If you want to go further, time to grind to 50+ and get to Heavensward :D

ALSO! AH--If you see an Ayaka Yatsurugi in-game, feel free to drop a hi :D

Unfortunately, the best option will indeed be either the Market Board or examining another player and trying on what they have. On the plus side, you CAN try on multiple pieces at once. On the dressing room screen, there is an icon with a little push pin. Clicking that will make the game "remember" what pieces you have tried on thus far and only replace them if you try on something else that takes up that slot or you deselect the push pin icon.

There's also a Tumblr or three out there, I think, where they have screenshots of various outfits and list the pieces needed to get that look. Don't know them offhand, though. Still, hope all this helps!

You must be one of those filthy Selunites. Angel

Wait, I can level up using that? From how I read it I thought it was like a separate mini-game like system. ..if it can level me I might just go do that.

Apparently I missed this, thank you!

Luckily without being a cleric I don't have to pick just one. Wink

Edit: As an after thought: How do people make the definitions between the "RP Style"? Like, what's the difference between medium and heavy? Is there some sort of guideline I'm missing?

And somehow the heresy grows even more intense!

The difference is somewhat a matter of perspective; heavy roleplayers spend the majority of their time IC, on up to all-the-time. Medium is probably a good 50-50 spread, where as light is probably below 25%. There's no real set-in-stone guideline though.

Also, Agrias is awesome. You're the only other one I've seen with an FFT portrait so far. Kudos.

Ah, alright. Guess something like that is needed for a MMO.

As for Agrias, heck yes she's awesome. FFT is one of my favourite games of all time. I'd definitely play a Holy/Divine/Temple Knight if there was a job like that on FFXIV. If the Dark Knight wasn't considered a tank and had some abilities that were FFT-like I'd so be going for that.

Eh, the "rating" stuff doesn't really get all that much use- you just RP however much you want to, and if you really want to adopt a label, you certainly can. Not everyone does. MMO RP is definitely a bit of a different sauce than tabletop, but not because of needing ratings. It's not all that different from (or at least, my experiences on) NeverWinter Nights on the persistent world RP servers. That is, roleplay here in an MMO is still a PW where even if you're offline, plotlines and characters can advance and develop without you knowing. There can be spontaneous events and encounters even when you're online. It's a bit of a tradeoff compared to the tabletop world where everything is generally event-driven rather than a 24-7 steady progression. On the one hand, you get a much more immersive, living, and dynamic experience... but on the other, you also miss out on so much and it's much more labor intensive than just having a set schedule. Order and chaos, pretty much!

Tactics definitely takes a spot in my top-10 list, and I'd be right there with you if they ever released a class like that for FFXIV! Gosh. Kasi would hit the hell out of that. It'd be amazing to have ranged sword skills like Lightning Stab or Stasis Sword. We can dream... for now I'll have to settle to doing dungeons to the soundtrack instead.

Yeah you can level using it :3 A lot of people actually use that nowadays (Especially the 1-15)! Mind you, the real level/exp gained shows after you've finished the 10th floors of each batch! CX The higher the floors--or rather, the deeper you go, the more exp gained!
As most have already answered your questions, just swinging in to say "Welcome to the Forums!"

Tactics remains one of my favorite Final Fantasy games. Just the ability to so heavily customize your characters mixed with good music and a deep story of intrigue. I even picked up War of the Lions as soon as it came out so I could have FFT on the go - even though I don't really use my PSP much anymore.
