Hello there. Very very new to the game and not even out of trial yet.

I'm a fan of epic fantasy and love reading the big world shaking tales of a small cadre of heroes against a larger than life foe, even more so when there's a little humor mixed in.

I've been role playing in MMOs for years and tend to focus on character development, often posting stories alongside my normal roleplay. Lately I've gotten into a little storytelling but I'm sad to say most of what I come up with is small personal tales that don't extend beyond five people at most, nothing far reaching.

In the past I've avoided the game because I have never played Final Fantasy and the lore felt overwhelming but I heard the role play and the community are both amazing and decided to give it a shot. So far I am loving the gameplay so I am not disappointed, I plan to sign up and try to pop my character over to Balmung where all my friends are.

I'll be playing a Hyur Bard but made a few alts for kicks before I discovered naming conventions.

Anyway a few questions:

How open is everyone to a new player in the group?
How easy is it to transfer to Balmung?
Does everyone get really strict on naming conventions?
How far can I get being lore handicapped?

I can only speak for people on the Balmung Server and I can say we are extremely open to a new player in a group. Our server is pretty welcoming with that said though being a slightly out going RPer will help you with your interactions and that so called breaking the ice. Many people love walk ups!

Easy? Well its fairly easy as I've transferred myself. It will cost you some real currency to do so but other then that I had no hiccups.

Naming Conventions are important but I don't think anyone is 'strict' on this rule. As long as your not named "Bunghole66" lol you should be fine (Cloud Strife or variances are odd too).

You can get pretty far being lore handicapped. I'd say as long as your character play's that up some you'll be fine. You'll learn the lore as you go and i'm certain people will help you too!
Welcome to Eorzea! And roleplay within it as well :3 If you love those kinds of stories, then your going to adore the main story. Even if it's a bit slow to start at first, once it starts rolling your going to be in for a riiiiide.

As for your questions, I shall do my best to help!

How open is everyone to a new player in the group?

It rather depends on the group your with, some are super welcoming of new player and others are not so much. Best advice would be to ask any Free Company (guilds) your looking into joining if they would be alright with someone new, and would be open to helping you learn the ropes and offer a helping hand.

As far as the general population however? I've only come across people who are welcomeing of newbies, and are even excited to know that we have fresh faces to the community and the game in general. So as far as general walk-ups go? I think you'll be alright Big Grin

How easy is it to transfer to Balmung?

Very easy. Your characters just need to be three days old (72hours) and finished the first few quests with the adventurer's guild within the main city. After that it's about 20$ to tranfer a character, but here is the good part. You get to transfer up to 8 characters, who are on the same server, at the same time for no additional cost! And considering Your characters will all get a free fantasia as your first veteran reward. That means you have 7 potential alts alongside your main already on balmung when you want/need them. And if you name them all after names already taken on balmung. That's a free name change for each of them as well!

Does everyone get really strict on naming conventions?

Some do, some don't It honestly depends on the person. Thankfully there is a really handy set of name generators out there to help you! Such as this hyur one here.

How far can I get being lore handicapped?

Quite far. The MSQ (Main story quests) teach you A LOT about the world around you, and various aspects of it. By 50, you should have a pretty solid grasp on the basics, and be able to learn the rest on your own through RP with various different characters. Or by chatting with people if your curious about aspects. Big Grin
Welcome to the RPC! While I'm not new to FFXIV itself, I'm new to the roleplaying community; so I hope my perspective on things can also help- though Lamia basically covered it all pretty well!

1. People here are fairly open to new players, from what I've experienced so far! There's also a lot of other people who just got to Balmung, are starting new characters, or something similar. As long as you put yourself out there, people here are willing to help you and arrange interactions!

2. I did it only a few days ago, and it took only a few minutes for the transfer to go through. A bit expensive if you're only doing one character (like I did, but I'm still on an entry-level subscription after.... over a year). If you think you may ever want an alt, I'd make them all now and let them sit. Balmung is never open. except to my sister, who was able to make a character by just waiting during DAYLIGHT HOURS. and then she deleted it later......

3. I haven't really met anyone so far who has gotten super upset about it but I haven't been here for very long myself. I think as long as you have a name that fits the character & their backstory, nobody will bug ya too much about it; their characters will ask about it at worst.

4. It depends on your character! Obviously if your character is a historian or something, that might not work out very well... But say someone was submerged with work their whole life, was a slave of some kind, etc etc... Them not knowing much would make sense. Plus like what Lamia said, you'll learn a lot especially in the first part of the MSQ. There's even a timeline on the wiki and plenty of people willing to help you out with it! (Hell, I've learned more about the lore myself through other people's characters.)
Not much I can add here!

In any case, welcome aboard the RPC and welcome to Balmung soon, hopefully! Thumbsup

Hello Ellmida! Welcome to Eorzea and the RPC! The lore of this game in particular can be pretty difficult to get into at first until you learn how to look for it. You can find a lot of stuff in the game just by doing quests and levequests, or if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask in this thread or in the Lore Discussion section.

These links should also help with the basics of getting started though. Hope this helps! ^^

Eorzean Lore Starter Kit
-Racial Lore Compilation
-Class/Job Lore Compilation
-Hydaelyn Geography Lore
-Settlements in Eorzea Pre-Calamity
-Eorzean City-states' Political Structures Lore
-Eorzean Units of Time and Measurement Lore
Hello and welcome to the RPC! Hope your transfer goes smoothly!
Thanks for all the response. I hate having a cluttered character list but in the spirit of being economical I went ahead and mate the max 8 in justification that I can delete the excess later if it REALLY bothers me.

I do already have a character in mind that I just adore how she turned out in the creation screen. I tend not to play anti-social characters often because they can be a bit tedious for me and the idea I have in mind is something on the opposite end.

Rolled Archer for class and plan to go Bard of course, because Bards are awesome.
Just wanted to give you a massive welcome to the RPC <3 Enjoy your time here (WESHOULDRP)
