Hi. I'm new to Balmung, but not new to RP. I'm also looking into possibly getting into FCs after a bad run on the previous server I was on.

In any case, I'm working on putting together a background and would like some input to help with making it?

My character is a Raen Au Ra that I would like to be possibly a crafter of some sort or "wandering hero" type that doesn't really like to stay one place for long. As an idea of the wandering hero, think of it as the chinese martial artist that just doesn't stay in one place but wanders around looking for some place peaceful to stay the rest of his life or the vengeance seeking hero looking for the killer of a family member/mentor/person who framed them.

I am having trouble finding more on the lore for the auri themselves, however, as well as some of the Doman region and it's history in the FFXIV world.

So, hoping to get some help on this as well as creating some background to go with it. The research I've done so far suggests that a displaced Raen could be wandering and looking for a new home or the like, and I am thinking I may go with that since they have the whole Doman razing issue in place already as far as the lore.
I played a wandering Raen monk for awhile. Sadly, there is not a lot of lore on Raen. That's why the xpac is exciting, as well finally get a look at Doma/Othard, along with the obligatory massive lore dump from quests and the like

The easy thing to do is create a somewhat generic backstory as far as it pertains to their homeland, have your character live in the present and not talk about the past much, and then fill in backstory details as you discover more during SB.

Anyway, welcome to Balmung!
If your character is a wanderer might I suggest the Shroud Life linkshell? They have a discord as well and cater to characters that don't really stick around the cities.
They have a lot of criminal elements but I'm aware they are open to all walks of alignment.

If it helps, a lot of the Au Ra of both types that have come to Eorzea and there because they were fleeing from Othard due to the actions of the Garleans. So, if you need something for your hero to be vengeful against - the Garlemald's a good fallback. Also, there's two (I think?) Xaela tribes that are usually in conflict and one that is basically just mean to the rest, so there's that option if you don't want to go the Anti-Empire route.

Of course, being deposed could also provide a reason why your character is wandering for peaceful reasons. You've been uprooted from your homeland, so now you're just trying to find that little piece of your own again in Eorzea - perhaps a spot that reminds you most of home, or maybe even one that is as least like it as possible to avoid having those bittersweet memories always at the forefront of your mind.

I'll look into that one. Thank you. Definitely interested in not being completely city tied here.

Excellent suggestions there. He is a Raen, however, so not sure the Xaela would be a good idea overall there. I'm definitely planning on running with the Garlean bit.
The Raen seem to be more classic oriental in feel, like monk, samurai etc.. , while the Xaela are more Mongolian tribal in style.

So for your Raen there are many oriental tropes that would fit. Just see whatever film or show or manga that suits.

I have a Raen male myself who dishonered his lord and is now a down and out Ronin type in Eorsea. Torn by his fall an struggling with his own morals vs the lord he let down. I based him around a yakusa/samurai type.

ShroudLife admin reporting in! Would certainly recommend this too- it's great if you plan to wander out in the wilderness a great deal. The original thread is dated now since the player has left the game for the time being- but the Discord link is still valid. You can poke the thread in my signature, and bug me in-game nightly for an invite to the LS!
