Hello,

I am new to FFXIV, Balmung, and Role Play.   Friends drew me to FFXIV, but they have moved on to other things.  In the little time that I have spent in the game, the community has really impressed me.   I'm not used to seeing so much of the player base caring this much about the game.  Watching Ethys Asher's YoutTube channel showed me I was missing out on a whole new level of fun in the game.

I tend to care more about the story/lore of a game than I do the game-play.  I will put up with numerous bugs and glitches, if the story grabs me.  I am loving every minute of the Main Story Quests.  The artwork of this game is amazing, and seeing how players have used it to make their characters and housing unique truly impresses me.

I've just landed on the Balmung server.  I am hoping to start out my journey as a casual role player.  Then work my way up to medium role player as I learn from the experiences along the way.

For now I will be spending the majority of my time playing as M'iriya Pahri.  As I learn more about FFXIV, the Balmung server community, and how to RP, I might change to a new character to experience it as a single adventure.

Thank you all for everything I have learned lurking around the forums, and all of the information that has been compiled in the Welcome Desk to help people like me.
Hello and welcome! Just starting out rp can be a very exciting time! Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions and use the Making Connections forum to start reaching out!
Hey there and welcome aboard to the RPC, FFXIV, and Balmung! Thumbsup

As Safety mentioned... the Making Connections forum is a good way to hit the ground running!
Oooh fresh blood Big Grin I don't mean that in a horrific way, I promise. It's always intriguing to find someone who is new to roleplay and see how they thrive once they get the first taste. Welcome to the site and to Balmung. I promise that the people are far nicer on this server.

As an old, decrepit (at least I feel that way) RPer, may I offer that first initial advice of: "If your character feels like slipping on comfortable shoe, you're doing it right" and also "The best advice is usually that given from someone willing to listen to you." Never hesitate to ask questions or reach out, because I promise the proverbial hand will be there for you Smile

I'm new to Balmung myself, but if you have questions or want to nudge someone, feel free to add Kathenna Casibree to your friend's list. At worst, you might get a friendly wave from me. At double worst, you might have to RP with me if you ever choose to, lol.
Aha now I get to post on these too, Welcome! I identify a lot with your plight. What I have noticed is that if you're good at just typing, it's not that hard to tag along. In my opinion what you need first and foremost is a trade of some sort, something that you or your character does that you can sort of talk about. The few times I've gotten myself to approach someone they've been very open and you don't need a ready-made story, they'll be more than fine with you making it up along the way and as far as I know that's also how character development actually works, you just make things up as you go deeper into certain subjects. Though on that note I will say it might be a bit tricksy to stay consistent. Ultimately I project a lot of myself into my character, which helps a lot with that, but I have also read/known people who play their character entirely different from themselves and build a whole story around a different persona, though that is something I could never do. Regardless, I would say that's more advanced anyway, as far as I know most people just play a version of themselves with quirks, but that's mostly a hunch at this point I really don't know.

ANYWAYS, rambling aside, git gud at typing and get the courage to step up to people, and the rest ought to fall into place. Poke me at any time if you wish i'd be more than happy to have a chitchat IC or OOC.

Please, please.... call me Goggles!
I agree with SP, New Players especially those flexing their RP muscles the first time is most exciting. I remember my first times diving into RP back when Starwars Galaxies first launched. I was nervous but excited at the same time, I actually spent a week watching others RP at a cantina to learn and develop a sense of it.

It's the fact your new that it makes you the best to RP in Final Fantasy XIV or any other environment because your more adaptable, your fresh of mind and absorbing the world as you go. There is no past experience or expectations and that makes it really enjoyable and fun(Not everyone holds past expectations through their life as a RPer but often it molds us)! Have fun with it and if you ever need help you'll find plenty here @ HRC
I am new to FFXIV but not  rp, hopefully I will be starting  to  rp shortly and i am pretty much  open to rping with almost anyone so if I am around and have the rp tag up feel  free to  pester me IC. If i don't have the RP tag up feel free to pester me ooc
Thank you for the responses.  Server maintenance today, so I guess I'll use the opportunity to get involved in the forums more tonight.

One thing I have noticed is Balmung appears to be primarily PC players.  I sometimes play on my PS4 to relax/kick back (even more with the Pro patch).  I admit I type slower on the PS4, should I just stick to PC when I expect to interact with others?

I'm not really familiar with the game on PS4, but I assume you have a keyboard for it? That will certainly be essential for RP. I do know a number of people who play (and RP) on the PS4 though, so it's definitely not all PC players.

Welcome to the game, and to Balmung, and to RP! Please reach out if you have any questions or want to try your hand at some RP. Note that tumblr is another great way to engage with the RP community. A lot of Balmung RPers have IC/RP/or otherwise character-related blogs there. See you around!
Most the folks I know are on PS4 XD

But yes, I am sure there are more PC vs PS4. I use a keyboard for typing, so the only issue I kind of have is walking/typing. But other than that, same as if I was on PC.
I have a keyboard (I think its a Logitech K400?) for when I'm on PS4.  Most of the extra delay comes from how I am sitting / relaxing when on PS4 vs sitting in an office chair at a desk when on PC.  There seems to be a slight delay in typing on PS4 in general, I'm not sure if that's a problem with the wireless keyboard I'm using.   I haven't attempted to use a wired keyboard on the PS4.

It's bad enough that I am asking people to deal with my newbness.  I'm afraid of adding the delay of slow responses or actions that would throw off the timing the interaction.   Then again, it is over the internet, so maybe people are forgiving about the delay.

I use a wireless keyboard on my PC (Logitech as well) and I don't really suffer any input lag at distance, and given that game consoles are simply heavily dedicated computers, I don't think it should lag too much if it is- it is the price of not having a wire after all. Though, this being the internet, people are used to dealing with others who have direct latency with their connection alone (like me), and I would think they would be pretty forgiving about it. Basically every roleplayer I've ever known was pretty patient with anything really.

Of course, I mean, there's always the forum RP as well if you want a place to exercise your roleplaying ability and not worry about delays. It's only another option; keep enjoying the in-game RP, you're already at the RP central anyways!
