I started playing FFXIV a few weeks ago. Forgoing an RP server at first, I picked Hyperion to play with some old friends; which didn't quite work out. Just last night I transferred over to Mateus, and am interested in joining the RP community. I have about 2 years of RP experience between STO and SWTOR. I realize it's a big transition from Science Fiction/Fantasy to High Fantasy, but I'm also a Final Fantasy Fan (VIII being my favorite) so I look forward to it.

My character is a Hyur named Tirothion Reiem. I'm still working on a backstory for him, although I have some ideas. I could still use some help from some of the more lore-savvy players here. I'd like to find some way for him to hail from a technologically advanced civilization (about modern tech levels or so), as those settings in Final Fantasy are the ones I've found myself liking the best. However, as far as my understanding of the lore goes, that would leave the Garlean Empire as the best candidate. Considering they are the baddies, I'd have to think of a way to make that work. I mean, I could always go the "coming from another world" or "was brought into the past (or future) from a technologically advanced Eorzean civilization"; which I'm sure would go over really well so I'm going to stop that train of thought right there. Point is that I would like to find a backstory that I'm happy with but doesn't make people roll their eyes as they read over my bio, so any help in that regard would be appreciated.

Personality wise, Tiro will be the "serious demeanor but good heart" kind of character. Not a complete prude, but he'll have to warm up to you before he laughs at your jokes. Regardless of how that makes him seem, he won't hesitate to put himself between danger and someone else; as he doesn't hold his own life in as high regard as others. Unless that life is one of malevolence, then he won't hesitate to smite it out for the greater good. That covers the basics for him, now I just need to find a way to mesh that with a backstory.

That's about it for Tiro, now a bit of info about me: I'm 29 years old and I work as an ambulance dispatcher in California's bay area. I live with my lovely wife to whom I have been married to for almost five years. When I'm not at my computer or playing video games, I tend to build plastic models of the giant robot variety (Gunpla is freedom). My favorite Final Fantasy is VIII, and Squall has been my favorite video game protagonist ever since I was 11. I'm a big Scifi fan, and could probably hold a decent conversation with you if you ask about any movie or show with the word "Star" in it. My favorite book series are The Expanse and The Dresden Files, and I've written a novella length story on the /r/nosleep subreddit. I really enjoy RP because making stories has been a long time hobby of me and I feel it has made me a better writer.

And that's enough about me for now. I look foward to meeting some of you in game.

As far as psuedo-technologically advanced civilizations go, the Garlean Empire is your best bet in modern Hydaelyn. They are the evil empire, but that's not to say all Garlean individuals are evil. I'd highly recommend making your character an engineer of the Garlond Ironworks, an organization of Garlean defectors and Eorzea's top engineers who reverse engineer Garlean machina, known as Magitek, to use in the realm's defense. They've also utilized it in a number of other ways, such as airship advancements and more recently the creation of the machinist job in Ishgard. You can even get an Ironworks engineer outfit on the mog station if you decide that's what you want to do.

As you progress through the storyline, you'll also learn about the ancient Allagans. This civilization existed roughly 5000 years ago in the 3rd Astral Era and were the most technologically and magically advanced civilization in Hydaelyn's known history. It is from old Allagan technology that magitek and Eorzean clockwork were eventually reverse engineered, though our modern understanding of their tech is minuscule. There are various organizations and entities which are studying Allag's secrets, the most well-known one being the Sons of Saint Coinach, a Sharlayan-based group of scholars working at various dig sites around Eorzea.

Hope this helps, Tiro! ^^ Lemme know if you have more questions!

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely keep the Garlond Ironworks in mind. The idea I have at this point (still very tentative due to learning lore still) is instead of having Tiro be Garlean (like with the third eye and everything) make his origins be from territory that was annexed by Garlemald. Ala Mhigo comes to mind of course, but I'd want to look at my options. I'm thinking his family were collaborators to the Garlean occupation for better treatment and eventual citizenship, his father even joining the army as a Legionarius. Around the time of the Calamity, something happens that gets his father killed or worse, and his family attempts to flee to Eorzea, with him being the only one to successfully get away.

Just some ideas though. I'm going to play through the main story more (maybe even finish it) before I build and apply his backstory and really get into RP. This is all just conceptual so far.
