Just a heads up to people that Mateus has been getting locked on and off for the past few days. Now is likely nearly your last chance to make characters there if you want to.
Note: Transfers will still work
If it follows how Balmung went, we'll likely see Mateus locked during NA primetime first, followed by NA/EU primetime. At that point, creating a character easily will start to become something people do right before/after patches and/or emergency maintenances. Assuming SE hasn't learned from previous mistakes, it'll allow for transfers far past what it should if people continue to transfer in.
A word of advice if people -do- take the transfer route. You can transfer up to 8 characters from one world to another. So if you even think you might want alts, transfer in placeholders.
As an old Mateus player who originally joined for the lower server population (ps3 limitations, please understand) I think that if you decide you need another "new RP server" you should pick 2 or 3 different ones rather than having everyone dogpile on a single server. Just my thoughts.

It may be worth noting that the RPC didn't pick/designate Mateus. That was done by users on multiple platforms between here, tumblr, in-game, various discord servers, and even the official forums. The RPC later added sections for Mateus (and Omega) after there appeared to be a general consensus among players that they were going to work on building up RP there.
...there was a bit more of a push for choosing Omega as an EU server, but that's because it was new and was either going to be Omega or another new server (which we later learned would be Louisoix).

Should one or more RP servers start to hit that critical threshold of having a sustainable RP population / enough FCs/Linkshells/Events to benefit from their own hall sections, RPC will add them in. (This again, requires that people are actually working on building it up to be sustainable, as had once happened on Gilgamesh [although a sustainable RP population there seems to have vastly declined] and later on Mateus, even though we'd previously heard of RP offerings on Siren and Jenova by multiple groups.)
Suggesting people to group on similar servers tends to do the above. Similar to how people continued trying to get into Balmung long after creation was closed. It's generally not as simple as saying "go RP in/at/on _____" unless people see activity there. (Whether forum/discord/in-game/whatever.)
This has been going on for almost two months now. It locks at primetime and is open throughout the rest of the day.
I've been leveling an alt on Adamantoise in the hopes that maybe one day I'll be able to swap it to Balmung like I should have done when I had the chance. I'm hearing and seeing Mateus is popular too though, so maybe this is a sign. I'll have to look into how it affects the Road to 60 buff since I might still want to make use of that to level up war, but it'd still probably be worth transferring.Â

For all the Omega (EU) talk? It's pretty dead in terms of RP. You do a RP tag search and like 12 or less people show up but do it on Mateus and like 160 show up in the search so it's like....lol

Not everyone makes use of the RP tag, or uses it in the same ways. That might not be an accurate tool for finding RPers on the server. It's still a fairly recent status icon. I know for myself, I only put it on if actively in-character, not to specify if I'm an RPer. They might do the same. I know they've got a few active listings here on the RPC and I think they have a discord or two as well for coordination, but I'm not in it to verify.
Thinking on some of the previous alternate RP server polls that went through the RPC and tumblr, Faerie, Jenova, and Siren are the other smaller servers I know of that have had an RP presence, with Jenova having the most listings out of the three. Perhaps we'll see more growth there if people have difficulty getting onto Mateus, but still want something in the Aether datacenter so they can continue to message friends on shared servers/do content together.
Character creation getting temporarily locked does not mean all that much.
All the busier servers will get temporarily locked for character creation now and then.
When a server starts getting locked on a semi-regular basis even during off-peak hours - that's when it is time to start worrying for real. Mateus isn't there yet.

I... forget it exists half the time.
When I do recall that it's a Thing, I'll still usually only have it on when I'm in a public area like the Quicksand to mark I'm available for walk-up. Doesn't mean I'm not RPing or available for RP when it's not up... it's just something I haven't solidified in my mind as a thing to have "On" at most times, even when in the middle of RP.
Ah, the 'RP' tag. I spent so many years rping without it that I often forget it. Lol
Eh, I suppose that's true.
But to me it still shows the difference. Mateus people use it enough that almost 200 people show up at anytime with the RP tag while Omega it peaks at like 14-15.
RP tag/info notes (You know, the M/E/RP blah blah blah stuff) are really the only way I can gauge RP on the server at the moment. And both of those are kind of sparce there.
