Okay, So I was going to go for a normal Sea Wolf naming convention (
Ostyrsthal Fyrentsyn) but i was thinking of normal play and thinking would people consider it a bit too confusing to pronounce and understand in party play and such. I mean would the average user look at it and think "He looks like he just smashed his head against the keyboard for that name"

What do you folks think? Im still thinking of going as my Sea Wolf, But theres a niggle in the back of my head making me want to go Hellsguard instead Huh
In my experience, most players (and characters) will come up with abbreviated nicknames for characters with long names. That's definitely true out of an RP context. So, I wouldn't worry about it; name your character what you like. Smile
I'd think both Tyr and Thal would be decent shortened/nicknames, unless you want a specific meaning to go with those as well.
Howdy, fellow 'Wolf! Thumbsup
The Eastern Steel, son of the Fire End..? Did you mean Fire-Ender (Fyrenta)?

IMHO Ostyr or Stahl should be a good shortened name in conversation for you.

Im not sure, I got it from http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threa...post979158 apparently Ent means End, Why would an A be added at the end?

An A added at the end turns a verb to a noun. Depends on whether it's supposed to be fire-end or fire-ender.

Quote:Verb+a
Braen (Break) + a = Braena (Breaker)

Ex: Aisbraena (Ice Breaker)
I've been told Agata Blysstahlwyn os too much of a mouthful even though it's fairtly easy to pronounce (I mean it's just blis-tal-win, really) so I'm pretty sure yours will make people run away screaming. Tongue

Could use some simplification, maybe. ^^;
I'd agree that you should name your character whatever you want to, and then you can RP the results.  It's not technically a 'mouthful' unless you're communicating primarily over chat.  Don't get me wrong, the first time I saw some of the names in game I thought that the localization team was drunk, but it's really a great part of the lore of the game.  Easiest solution?

"Nice to meet you, name's Ostyrsthal Fyrentsyn but my friends call me..."

I thought that is how all of us Roegadyn characters came up with our names lol. The lore guys said their names were German influenced so it could be why it looks insane. You can go Sea Wolf with a Hellsguard name if you wanted to, but I think your name is perfectly fine. The Hellsguard still basically name themselves the same way as the Sea Wolves, but just say it in a different tongue because they are usually mercenaries and such and have to deal with different races more often.

You can have a nickname as some people have said or you can just have people call you Steel or whatever. I thought about having people call my character, Dennthota Ahtahrmwyn, just Thunder, but then realized Denn was not that bad.

And Asyria, Agata's last name is insane xD lmao. I love it. I don't even know how to begin going about to pronounce that one.
We also have a nice running joke where ICly the leader of the Night Blades always says Denn's last name is something different (My favorite being "Armaged-Wyn") because he can't remember it.

It's easy! Bliss Tall Win! Tongue (ironically that fits her, too).
Though when I ran around with her in phase 3, I was asked if I facerolled her name on the keyboard... T_T

Blyss is blossom, stahl is steel is wyn is daughter... meaning her mom's name was Steel Blossom, and Agata is Amber.

So yes, you're absolutely right about Hellsguard names being exactly like Sea Wolf names except in "English" If agata was Hellsguard, she'd be called Amber Steelblossom, I guess.

But yeah I guess you could just keep the name as it is and let people give you the nicknames they want.

"Hail, friend! I am Ostyrsthal Fyrentsyn.
"Hello, ostari... ostrich, err.. no... Hey, Ost! Nice to meetcha!"
^
Mr. Ostrich! Nice idea, I like it! Big Grin
Players will shorten your name as they see fit to make it easier on themselves. My name was previously Ruok but it was still just easier to be "Ru." I assume I'll now be called "Mu" by those who knew my character as a Lalafell, even though Murlona's name isn't as complex as Roegadyn names can go.

Introducing yourself or giving your peers permission of a certain name will help if you don't want people butchering it in an attempt at shorthand.

Playing in parties with strangers, nobody cares what your name is and if anyone wants to send you a /tell, they can just click on your name.

I went this route with my Sea Wolf. She has her original "proper" name, but her in game name is a Hellsguard version, since she deals with the other races often enough that it was a pain to go over pronunciation every time. The meaning is the same in every language, though, and that's what matters to her more than the actual name.

Plus, I feel like simple "word" names make it easier for people to remember you and fits the Final Fantasy feel really well (i.e. Cloud, Squall, Dagger, Blank, Ward, Edge, Hope, Snow, Lightning, Locke, Raine, Paine etc.)
Well, I'd assume RPers in general will realise the reason Roe names look the way they do, so that shouldn't really be an issue.

As for in general, the way I think about it is if the first name has something easily abbreviated to a short nickname (which yours has), it isn't an issue. Might just be in my experience but people very rarely refer to someone by their surname, so that being more of a mouthful is less of an issue.

Then again, if you don't want random people to abbreviate your first name to a short nickname you're pretty much out of luck, because people really like to shorten things.
