Errr.. Anyone else kinda upset about the duty finder groups? Balmung was placed in "Group 1", while a lot of heavily populated servers were placed in "Group 2" - i.e. Gilgamesh, Leviathan, and Behemoth. I'm kind of worried this will hurt DF times by splitting it in half, not help Sad

I don't think that's the case. I mean the thing with the duty finder is that it's all about proportions. If all the tanks and healers were in the other duty finder, sure, that would cause problems. But if you have 100 people queued up for a dungeon and 85% of them are dps, it won't be any worse than if you have 1000 people queued up and 85% of them are dps.

Actually... someone with math... would it actually be better?

Anyway, I don't think it's anything to worry about. On the contrary, I think the fact that we're more likely to run across people from our own server is kind of cool.

I guess I should clarify.

There are two potential situations. One is that when you queue, the DF is trying to find someone, anyone, who wants to do what you want to do. The second is that the DF actually puts you in a long line of people trying to do the same thing.

If option 1 was actually what was happening, then yes, the smaller group would be frustrating. But it's not, as shown by a few pieces of evidence:

a) Tanks and healers typically get insta-queues. That wouldn't be happening in option 1. It shows that the queue is actually a line of mostly dps waiting for a tank or healer or both.

b) When I did Ifrit, I stayed in that cavern and there were a TON of people standing around waiting. I could watch them and a few would disappear one after another until it was my turn. It wasn't that no one wanted to fight Ifrit - it was simply a matter of waiting my turn.

So, yeah. More or less people isn't going to hurt or help queue times at this point. The only thing that will affect it is the proportion of tanks and healers vs. dps.

Exactly this.
Some mmorpgs do this and it works just fine. one that I'm aware of doing this is WoW, they split the dungeons/pvp instances by 'battlegroups' for these reasons and to probably put less stress on their servers like SE is currently doing.
Give it a few days, before being overly worried/complaining.

You haven't even seen it in practice yet! Big Grin
I didnt think they were cross-server yet, so it should make no change to your queue times.  This was just done to balance load on the server.
What I'd like to see added is the option to queue just with folks from your own server. For community-building purposes, I'd like to be able to see the folks I party with again. I've met people I'd like to befriend, but they disappear back to their own server. On the flip side, fewer people may ragequit if they knew they'd have to see the rest of the party again. I haven't had any really bad behavior in dutyfinder, but some accountability would be nice. I certainly am not as friendly because I know I'll never see anyone again.

You can already do this by building your party before you queue.

No, they were definitely cross-server.

It's important to note that this WILL affect everyone's queue time to some degree. There isn't ALWAYS someone signing up to the exact same instance you are at the exact same time, so even healers and tanks may end up waiting for a minute or two for players to show up (especially during off-peak hours).
Last week, I was having to queue a minute or two on gladiator while I was getting instant parties on conjurer for the level 15-18 dungeons. This week, now that I am on the level 20-28 dungeons, I've been getting instant parties as gladiator. I've been seeing more scholars in dutyfinder parties, so I wonder if many arcanists are playing scholars to get fast parties now that more players have reached level 30+.
I haven't had a lot of luck with the duty finder overall. I'm finding just making a group manually is a thousand times faster.
