Hello Aiden and welcome to the RPC,
If you have the chance could you pop into the user control panel and throw in what server you intent to be on? its not super important, just lets people know where to find you and all that jazz..
But anywho~ Again, welcome! There's certainly plenty to do, If you take a look at the forums you're likely to find something that interests you, Thaliak knows there are a lot of conversations going on and plenty of debate between the participants. If you're looking to help get your foot in the door I have a few links to share with you.
First is the welcome post provided by the RPC to all members found at:

Here you'll find a bit about the site over all, some links to the different resources across the site along with a short descriptions [like the wiki! home of character profiles and much more.] and a list of some of the community heads.
I'm not sure about your history with Roleplaying, but even if you're a veteran of MMO-RP you might find a few things of interest in the roleplay handbook provided by Eva at:

The text covers a variety of topics and presents different ways of viewing them. It also touches on some Eorzea specific situations you might find yourself in, handy if you'd like to see how someone else approaches the same mechanics/activity.
Onto the communities! The first two will be from Balmung, and the Third from Gilgamesh, so use as needed. All three are OOC and from my experience fairly active, welcome to newcomers and good places to get to know the people out in the world.

"Intermission" is an OOC hub of conversation bringing together RPers of all different styles from across Balmung. If you want to know whos on at what hours, where they might be or what events might be happening [that aren't listed on the RPC calendar] this is a great place to look.

"Balmungs Finest" is all about the group content. Farming the lowbie dungeons to get that acolyte set, smashing your face against Aurum Vale for your grand company, or farming for tomes, Balmungs Finest is the place to be to find groups or find people that are focused on building connections without resorting to the duty finder.

"Coalition" on Gilgamesh is an OOC RPer hub. Getting together to meet new people, introduce them to older members and help people a little lost immerse themselves in the community.
I hope that helps give you an idea of whats out there and waiting for you, as always please ask any questions you might have, the community is full of helpful people always willing to lend an opinion if not more. [Though sometimes you might have to bribe them with a Cookie or two.]
