So I'm curious.  As someone who primarily plays a Bard for the purpose of RP, I'm messing with some macros so I can perform songs while in character.  I've joined a very small LS of others, on the premise that we may get together at some point and do concerts and such.

Presently, I have a short list of songs from various musical genre that I'm looking at using, and by that I mean most of them originate outside of FF in general and may come from various RL sources. The idea is to use songs which fit the feel of the game, and ones which ALMOST fit but reference a RL location or concept would have lyrics altered just enough to fit the setting of the game.

However, I have heard it said by a fellow Bard player that people tend to dislike it when songs are used which are not specific to Final Fantasy.  Why is this, I wonder?  Is it because many of the non-FF songs aren't adapted to the setting when someone uses them, or simply because they're not related to the series in any way?

How do people feel about this?  Because if I'm going to do something like this, I'd rather do it in a way which isn't going to offend.
I actually wrote lyrics for Armi. I use Jpop songs, translate and re-write them into English and record them. Because she writes her own music. I always use mostly acoustic guitar songs (Or at least start out that way) and refit the lyrics to make sure they fit Eorzea, any reference to the real world is changed to something in Eorzea.

Generally when I'm with people I roleplay with a lot, if Armi sings a song I'll link the song so they can listen to it OOCly and pretend she's singing it. If it's people I don't know or it's not really the place, I'll type the lyrics into /say because people listening to me sing is scary!

I was considering have Armi be entertainment for thing and linking those songs so people could listen at an event, but she really needs to get over her crippling shyness.

It works out really well, and I've even gotten complimented on the idea.
Songs tend to be very iffy to me, though I'd change the location of the real life places to something in-game if you choose to borrow songs.  Or make up the names of said locations since the world isn't fully explored as of yet. Only thing I'd ask is this. Does the music make sense with the sound of a harp?

I'd say that it's pretty asinine to say shanties should not be sung though.  They're made for a reason and don't involve the political/social jargon that many modern songs possess.
Rinette does play an instrument but doesn't do any singing along with it. I've been thinking about this a lot actually because I would like her to get into performing even if it's just for friends.

I don't see a problem with using songs that aren't FF related and changing references to locations to something that makes sense for Eorzea. As long as it isn't too far out there like a rap song or something. I have yet to hear anyone say they don't like songs adapted to the FF world but I don't RP with very many bards. If someone does have a problem with it the only reason I could think would be they know the song out side the game and it would break their immersion.
I macro the song mixing in words, emotes and harp playing. Generaly this goes over 4-5 macros given the 15 line limit.

Song wise I either write my own or find and tweak what I think is a suitable song. If you stay away from mainstream songs and maybe try some folk typs ones you can find some nice ones to suit.

I do think many just see the performance as that, and don't read too much the words. So if the words are important then keep it short and punchy? I do at times just do a sample or one verse to suit the mood.

Other things you can work in a little macroed songs bites for say walking along or leaving.

There was an older thread where some posted the macros they were using, or if people like we can drop some in here?

I would love to join a Bard LS.. any details?
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. If you're on Balmung and want to join the bard LS just PM me with the times you're usually on so I can look for you and pass your names on to the LS leaders.
Refined from this early attempt but you should get the emote picture

*gasp* I never even thought about putting in emote motions.. You just blew my mind.
Sorry for posting again but I found a website full of folk songs that could easily work for a bard in Eorzea. Here. They even have hymns that after a bit of work miiiiight be able to be used for any of the Twelve.
I once composed a version of 'what does the fox say' but changed it to 'what does the carby say'. It was meant for luls, and the character who sang it was a very whimsical, not-serious character. No one seemed perturbed by my efforts.

I suppose a more 'serious' char might need to be a little more careful, but quite honestly... isn't the point of rp to be inventive, creative, and have fun? Why not be a jpop bard who's very upbeat and changes the music landscape?
