Hydaelyn Role-Players

Hello everyone,

My name is Ben, I'm new to the forums and will be playing FFXIV soon, I've PMed several people for more information on the game and the RP community in general and have received a lot of helpful information.  Anyway, I wanted to reach out to the broad side of the community now in hopes of being accepted and receiving help with getting started, character crafting, story writing, event planning, linkshell/guild interviews and finding the perfect home for me, and just making new friends and family.  So, let me give you all some more information, friends!

MMORPG Background:  I've been playing World of Warcraft since the conclusion of Vanilla/Burning Crusade launch.  I also have a large array of other games that I play, and while they may not be MMORPG's like FFXIV and WoW, I still enjoy them.

RP Experience:  Throughout my WoW career I officered a raiding guild in Wrath of the Lich King and early Cataclysm, later on I dedicated myself to RP where I officered several large and renowned RP guilds for several years.  And, though these games may not be intended to RP on, I do enjoy crafting back stories and personalities for my characters in Diablo III, Skyrim, and other games.  I love to give something, someone, a voice.  So, in short, I have a large amount of RP experience that comes from a rich history of RP.

Character Ideas/Information:  This is where I would like the input of the RP community.  While I have a few character concepts rattling around in my head, I would like to hear what people want to see more of, or when I find the linkshell/guild I call home, what they might want for story.  Keep in mind, I'm open to suggestions, but the finalized character as a whole will be my decision, and remain original.  But, I want to hear all your ideas and toss some concepts back and forth, show me what I should/shouldn't include in my character.

How did you learn about the Coalition?:  I learned about the Coalition while researching FFXIV and looking into how much RP meant to the playerbase and if it had an established community.  I'm glad I took a week of sifting through the internet to find the Coalition, it was more than worth it.

What kind of role-player are you aiming to be?  Light, medium, or heavy?:  I plan to be a HEAVY role-player, IC at nearly all times while online, always IC in city-states, towns, villages, etc.  If I am not IC for whatever reason, please send me a whisper asking me to be if you want to RP, I'll do so immediately.

Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc.):  My name's Ben, a nice and funny person, if you consider really awful puns funny, who's very accepting and eager to start a new life and career within FFXIV!  My hobbies are... gaming.  That's it.

I hope to hear from a lot of you with advice and information on the game and the RP community, what linkshells to look at, what server to be on, and just everything in general.  Feel free to PM me if you want, along with posting on this thread, I'll be sure to read it all, and maybe a few of us can even get in Skype and discuss RP; characters, story, events, and more!

Why hello there Ben! Welcome to the community! It is always great to see our family growing! 

To touch base on which server you should roll your future adventurer on it really depends on what you are looking for. The two to choose from are the all mighty Gilgamesh (okay I may be biased) and Balmung. Each have their own unique feel and community. Both have established OOC linkshells for you to use for help, socializing, and just plain silliness after a long day of real life. Both servers also have a diversified set of Free Companies and IC linkshells that you could join to enrich your RP experience! Just to give an example - from the Gilgamesh standpoint we have merchants, pirates, secret societies, academics, and more. I can't speak much for Balmung since I have not had much exposure (aka none) with their RP community. The only real difference is the size of the community on either server. Balmung being a Legacy server tends to have a greater number of players in their RP community. Gilgamesh's community, though not as large as Balmung, is quite active and our RP events have wonderful turnouts, a ton of world RP, and many of us love to have you just plop on down next to us and join in the fun! 

So in short! If it is possible make a character on both servers and see which community you lean towards. I chose Gilgamesh because I prefer to be part of something that is growing and my character has a chance to be a large part of the overall whole. But that's me  If you do decide to join with us Gilgameshians let me know! I'll get you to the right OOC channels!

I am glad you already PMed folks and got a lot of info, so I won't do the whole general info thing.  (Other people are WAY better than me anyways)

As for feedback on what characters/roles are needed... well, it really depends on what storyline you want to join.  I don't think there is one character type that are in need universally. Although I will say that the characters I have RP'ed with the least are Roegadyns.  But that being said, I myself rarely look to play with a character race, but to see if the character mesh with mine and can be incorporated into a story.

Just create a character that you want to play, and be flexible to incorporate them into an ongoing story should you come across one that interest you!  That would be my advice.  There are plenty of RP to get involved in in Balmung (Not that there isn't for Gilgamesh, I can only speak of the server I am in!), either through random walk ups or PMing folks if you like what you see in their wiki or posts.  I've done both and I can say I've had lots of fun! Don't be shy about PMing folks either (although I see you've already been doing that... YAY!) about getting something started, I've done that a LOT too and it's always been very well received. People here are so nice!

Well, thanks to the kind words of the RPC, I've finally gotten into the game... But, I'm having trouble coming up with a name, nothing seems good enough!  I would be much more comfortable choosing one if there was an option to change it later in game, lol!

Well. some people if they HATE their name or something, use the server transfer, create dummy character, then transfer back option to get their name changed.

It does cost money though.

Do you also know about the random name generator for FFXIV?  It could just give you some ideas.

To be totally honest, I don't have a problem spending the $36.00 to do the Dummy Transfer, and there's apparently a way you can change your looks as well? I'm fine with that kind of money, haha.  And yeah I've been on the name generator for a few hours! XD  I will be with you all soon!   Also, the realm I chose was Balmung!
