Considering that your average adventurer is a walking bank of crystals and clusters, considering that crafters use them by the bucket full, considering that Amal'jaa have to raid for crystal shipments constantly and usually the amount is significant amount to raise red flags.

so, just how much is needed to facilitate a primal?
Seven.

A real answer is: I don't know. I assume it's a pretty massive amount, but that's why they're always stealing them.
From my understanding: Not a specific amount. It still requires A LOT even as a bare minimum, but more = stronger incarnation of the primal being able to be summoned. It's been a long time since I did the quests that talk about it, so I might remember it wrong, though.

Thinking of it in terms of visuals we are presented with, that also lines up with how summoners' egi require a few small crystals for their little ritual, refering to the crystals floating around you during the cast animations. Egis are a tiny fraction of a primal's power, so we only need a few crystals. Wonder if we can assume by this that if we had a larger amount of crystals to use in our summoning ritual, we would be able to create stronger egis.

Edit: It also seems to change based on which primal you are trying to summon if I recall correctly. Ifrit usually being weaker than the others because he is usually summoned in more of a hurry, so the Amalj'aa have less crystals gathered up to summon him with. Titan being summoned as a complete beast because basically his entire cavern down there is littered with crystals used to power his summoning.

We don't really get much in terms of mention, or visuals for the efforts required in summoning Garuda, that I can remember.

Alternatively no crystals, as you see in the Ultima weapon cutscene, and in the t10 cutscenes. If people pray hard enough to a primal, it will show up. Crystals only seem to be needed if a primal's worshippers aren't already in distress. Torture enough kobolds and titan will come to protect his children, crystals or not.
Specifically? We don't know. Crates and crates worth, though. If you take into the consideration the average crystal probably fits in your hand, and likely needs some form of cushioning between each crystal for transport so they don't shatter, you can calculate out the average amount of crystals to be a veritable fuckton.

A lot. You need a lot. Not a lot, but a lot.

Also yes, they just don't tell us on purpose so we don't run off and summon primals left and right. Obvious answer.
I actually have a somewhat different take on the T10 cutscenes, based on some later cutscenes (naughty Freelance, watching them on YouTube) and what we know about Primal summoning generally...

It may be the case that the more fervent the prayers, the less Aether is required to complete the summoning; that seems plausible to me, since prayer seems to provide both Aether and the "call" the Primal uses to assume physical form. That would jive with Thancred's comments about tempered followers needing to be killed, as they assist the Primal in continuing its existence. Ultima Weapon is a weird case, but per the MSQ, it absorbed the essence of the Primals to use them; presumably it could power a "summoning" of them for various effects using its powerful magical core and its considerable Aetheric capacity.
