RE: Cowardly Antics. - banndsand - 07-03-2015 Character Fear? Qaratolui is afraid of large open spaces and is rather fearful of most women. How do they cope? So far, avoidance. How do people respond to their fear? Haven't had the pleasure of RPing him yet. Though his sister used to always pick on him, reinforcing his anxiety towards women. Do you think one day they could be cured of their fear? Certainly. He will have to get more comfortable around both if he hopes to succeed in his quest. RE: Cowardly Antics. - Griffith! - 07-03-2015 Marten, as a Dark Knight geologist, is only afraid of igneous rocks. They're just so... holy. ![]() Seriously? No fears really, though I was toying with fear of heights, which I thought would be delightful in someone who wants to work with airships. Arslan, though, is just afraid of going home. Not to the tent he's been sleeping in outside Ul'dah, but his real home, in Othard. He doesn't feel worthy of the steppe or his ancestors, not after fleeing from the Garleans. It makes him very reticent around other Xaela, and even a little hostile around other members of the Tumet tribe. I don't know if he'll ever get over it - it doesn't seem likely. But, it's not a real issue yet, either, as he physically can't return home. RE: Cowardly Antics. - Lilia Lia - 07-03-2015 (07-03-2015, 04:33 PM)Griffith! Best thing of my day ![]() RE: Cowardly Antics. - Caspar - 07-03-2015 For a character who professes fearlessness, Virara is actually troubled by a lot of things. Even though she is already more or less a natural born killer, Virara has a lingering strain of childishness: Minor Fears Ghosts: An unease around the concept of fairy tale ghosts, rather than voidsent which have taken physical form. She fears that which she cannot punch, and nothing that she can punch, so she often will remove herself subtly from the conversation and/or room if people are exchanging ghost stories. She will slowly recede behind couches, or quietly excuse herself to go hide somewhere else in a barrel... Food: Since she is constantly hungry, due to a strange metabolism, and has been near starving constantly as a child, she is always afraid of losing her food or not getting enough to eat, and fastidiously saves dried snacks and a generous sack of gil to feed herself. Between her repair savings (For things she breaks constantly like tools, her knuckle dusters, and training dummies) and her food savings, Virara typically has almost nothing to spend on herself, and lived like a transient until she joined her Free Company. Phobias Typhoon/Hurricane at Sea: For reasons she herself doesn't understand, extreme stormy weather upon the ocean will drive Virara into a violent panic. She cannot cope with this and luckily hasn't encountered it often. This has a lot to do with how she was cast away on her island. If she fought Leviathan, she'd be a mess, for instance. Being Tied Up: A new phobia. Before, she'd been restrained by her Master when she was but a savage, feral child, but this is a whole new level of terrible. She's been beaten a lot since coming to Eorzea, usually due to factors beyond her control (ICly and OOCly, my luck is garbage...), but none have shamed her as badly as the last defeat, where she came closest to death and was completely helpless. Now whenever anything ties her up, Virara feels and sees the metal bite of her foe's wires. Depending on how severe it is, or how stressful the situation, she copes by simply removing whatever is restraining her and taking a moment to calm down immediately, or panicking and flying into a violent, uncontrolled rage. It's not likely to ever leave her for the rest of her life. Maybe killing her assailant will help her recover a little. Anxieties Introspection: More an aversion than a real fear, but she responds to it in a similar way. Virara is emotionally immature and doesn't like to think deeply about how something makes her feel. If it confuses her, even worse. If she considers deeply what her goal is and mulls over her odds, she will invariably fall apart, so she must keep going without thought, and anything that compromises that focus is an unwelcome distraction. She will usually cope by preoccupying herself with something else, going off on her own, or in some extreme cases getting violently angry. Master: The idea of facing her Master causes Virara a lot of unease despite her ignorance of the fact. Whether she can win, whether she wants to win, whether Master is alive or dead, whether it will give her closure, whether it will give Master closure... These things would occur to Virara and she would perhaps be able to reason her way to normalcy, if she wasn't insistent on ignoring each and every last one of them in favor of a simple desire to kill. She can't anyway, since her entire being and sense of self are built upon this objective; indeed, it would be possible to argue Virara was never truly a "person" until she found focus. Most of the fears she has, people don't respond to, as Virara keeps it bottled up. When she expresses these emotions, then, they are as confusing to her as to other people around her. It is an unhealthy state of being. The way I see it, nobody's truly fearless. There's only people who profess fearlessness and are liars, haven't found the thing they fear yet, or are not in touch with their own emotions. Virara is the latter. Outside of these, Virara doesn't care if her enemy is an Opo-Opo or Vishap. She'll fight to the death without regrets or even a hint of fear, because she's convinced dying is impossible so long as she has yet to fulfill her objective. RE: Cowardly Antics. - Seye Qhesu - 07-03-2015 Character Fear? Kaguya has an odd fear of lambs. She finds them too fluffy and believes them to be the heart to of evil. Nothing that fluffy can have any good in it! How do they cope? Avoidance or screaming; depends on how close they are. How do people respond to their fear? No one knows... Do you think one day they could be cured of their fear? Of course but she will still find them to be evil, just not run away screaming evil. RE: Cowardly Antics. - Kurt S. - 07-03-2015 Ah yes, fears. Kurt fears anything with more than four legs or sometimes no appendages. Though he keeps a good lid on it and would casually nope away. Then I turned him into Kath. And she will lose her shit seeing one. The big ones arent as scary as the really tiny ones that make disappearing acts and causes her to abandon her room for periods of time, under the guise of some phantom 'task' she was given. How does she cope with it? She doesn't. She wont even touch it with her axe, preferring the safety of her carbine. No one's seen her lose her shit...yet. Cured? Her fear is not a disease. That cockroach is a disease and bullets are the cure. "Oh hey...a...spider...and another one.......I should probably write a fake venture request on my bell and put oh...malms between me and my room. I'm sure the rest'd understand." RE: Cowardly Antics. - Sigil.9054 - 07-04-2015 Character Fear? Thunderstorms. Not lighting/thunder magic. Just plain, mundane thunderstorms. How do they cope? They run inside and hide until it passes. How do people respond to their fear? Given that she seems otherwise fearless, they find it odd. Some soothe. Some tease. Some ignore it. Do you think one day they could be cured of there fear? I hope not. RE: Cowardly Antics. - Nyx Bajhiri - 07-04-2015 Nyx is afraid of open water. The idea that there are unknown depths where gods knows what is living down there. She hates traveling in any kind of ocean vessel and will do everything she can to avoid it. How do they cope? For the most part, she doesn't. She'll gladly take an airship or travel the long way around in order to avoid boarding a ship. How do people respond to their fear? Those who know about it think it's utterly hysterical that a rogue based in Limsa Lominsa and charged with keeping order among pirates is afraid of the ocean. Do you think one day they could be cured of there fear? Maybe? With enough exposure. It might help if she took the time to learn to swim. RE: Cowardly Antics. - Klynzahr - 07-04-2015 Considering the character that I play, I feel obligated to join this thread. Here is a selection from Klynzahr's rather long list of fears. First Fear - Explosions and similar loud noises, including canon fire, gunshots, and magitech blasts. The mere mention of these causes her great anxiety. Setting off a fire cracker near her may result in a Sea Wolf diving under the nearest chair. How She Copes - Generally through avoidance, although certain friends of hers have been known to make this difficult. Her instinctive reflex to dive for cover has actually saved her life in several instances. In the aftermath of an incident she frequently resorts to alcohol to calm her nerves. How People Have Responded - Well Eva has responded by setting off explosives next to Klyn at every available opportunity, presumably for her own entertainment. She has been laughed at IC and called "Jumpy" and "Timid" by various people. (OOC most folks find it pretty amusing to watch a giant Roegadyn trying to hide under a chair ![]() Could She Ever Be Cured? - I honestly doubt it for this one. While Eva has certainly made some progress in numbing Klyn to it. The end result will probably be better coping but not true loss of the fear. Second Fear - This one is less glaringly obvious to most people. Klynzahr is extremely anxious and fearful around large crowds. The most noticeable result of this is how the normally talkative Roe clams up when there are more than four or five people in the room. If the crowd is large, tightly packed, or rowdy she breaks into a cold sweat and may make a break for the exit (shoving everyone in her path out of the way) How She Copes - Klynzahr handles crowds by positioning herself near on the outskirts or near an exit, where she feels more comfortable. If she becomes overwhelmed, she beats a quick exit and goes straight to a familiar location. How People Have Responded- I am not sure if anyone has noticed. They certainly have not mentioned it. Could She Ever Be Cured? - This one may be possible over time. She already copes quite well. Third Fear - This one is slightly more complex and originated during RP last year. Klynzahr is deeply afraid of loosing control of her mind or having her grip on reality shaken. How She Copes - This one is a subject that she tends to avoid very strongly. Fortunately it is rarely triggered. How People Have Responded- It has only come up once in recent RP, when Eva's pain medication induced hallucinations for Klyn. Her resulting aversion to pain control seems to have convinced several characters that she is a masochist. Could She Ever Be Cured? - This one is probably a healthy fear, and I doubt she will ever loose it completely. Fourth Fear - Poverty. This is a fear born of experience for Klynzahr. She is terrified that injury or misfortune will bar her from adventuring and leave her starving on the streets. Or worse yet that bankruptcy will force her back to Ul'dah's fighting pits. How She Copes - By working obsessively, refusing most obligations and responsibilities, and generally living an extremely bohemian lifestyle. How People Have Responded - Most other characters seem puzzled by her obsession with work and gil, particularly those who are well off. Verad seems not to mind, because she is willing to take dubious things off of his hands if he pays her a few gil. Could She Ever Be Cured? - It is possible that this fear will ease over time. Most Recent Fear - She is now scared of mammots (thanks Spahro) How She Copes -By giving all things clockwork a wide berth. How People Have Responded - "Wait, you had your ribs crushed by a what?? ..... Hahahahaha!" Could She Ever Be Cured? - I am honestly not sure. Other Fears - There are lots of things in Eorzea that scare Klyn, which I will not write out here. The list includes commitments, poison, rogues, dragons, tax collectors, brass blades, voidsent, pirates, beastmen, starvation, anything larger than herself, her own emotions and loosing her eyesight. RE: Cowardly Antics. - McBeef™ - 07-04-2015 ^ That almost makes Evangeline sound like a bad person! (She is) Character Fear Evangeline's biggest fear is to be powerless, while what she values is taken away from her. She watched her family destroyed by the politics of Ishgard, and herself was imprisoned, tortured, and almost killed. How do they cope? She copes with anger, lashing out on any who seeks to control and power others. In her personal life, she can be cold and controlling as well, using the power she so hates in others to make herself feel secure. For example, as you can see in Klyn's post, Evangeline has a horrible nack of exploiting other people's fears at times. It also rears its head in her sexual life, but I'll keep that bit a secret ;D. How do people respond to their fear? Most have no idea this fear is the basis for her actions. She cloaks them by fighting those who oppress, and by being a bit of a tyrant herself. Do you think one day they could be cured of their fear? We shall see, it is certainly an ongoing process. The story of this fear is the story of Evangeline, eventually one day she might master it. RE: Cowardly Antics. - Aaron - 07-04-2015 Aarons biggest fear is women. It's like one wrong word and hes suddenly getting called a slut. And hes there like "Wat." He copes by being generic with what he says around them. |
