I dunno. Search info is good in that you can see who is a RPer. But it's not really a flag. LFM is a flag. I've been in game for a year and a half and don't even know what it looks like. Didn't even know we had it. RE: Proposal for Identifying Ourselves - Gegenji - 07-23-2015 I remember seeing it when I was looking to get rid of the "New Player" sprout on Judge, but I'll be damned if I can remember what the symbol is. And having something to display is better than nothing, and if there's enough people using it for a RP flag "stand-in", it might push SE into thinking there's some merit into having an official one. Dare to dream, right? ![]() RE: Proposal for Identifying Ourselves - Addison - 07-23-2015 ![]() It's yellow. It's a good idea: I've seen this idea thrown around in various LS's. I'd also like to throw out that while RPC is a small fraction of the community, there's nothing from stopping people from spreading the word to various LS's. Heck even shout once in a while at hubs would work, I would think. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, and something as simple as this doesn't need a long explanation. And if people don't want to use it, no big deal. I'm a crafter and if I saw that icon I'd just think "what's that?" Because it's never used. If you could get a smaller RP circle using it as a way of signifying whether or not you're IC, then it becomes useful. If I am walking around my residential area and see a few friends of mine with "Currently IC" icons over their heads, then I'm more likely to stop in and see what's going on. And it does accomplish more because how often do you actually individually check up on people's search boxes? A lot...Very frequently. If someone looks IC in the slightest I inspect. It's become a habit. But I wouldn't mind icons either, but if people don't use the tools they have now they most likely forget to use a new tool as well. I.E. If people forget they marked OOC/IC in their search box they most likely would forget to flag themselves as well. I'd still support the idea though, but I see it from both sides. RE: Proposal for Identifying Ourselves - Flickering Ember - 07-23-2015 Conversely, I almost never look at search info. I always forget but there's only so many ways "Walk ups, welcome" can be worded anyway. It would be kind of nice if people put a brief tidbit about their character instead of "walk ups welcome." I'm probably not going to start random RP without finding a character hook of some sort first. I saw Jancis doing this and I've kinda started doing it myself. Gogon especially doesn't actually even state walk-ups welcome, even if I am always up for RP. I might start doing the same with Judge and Chachan to add more fun tidbits with the extra space... so having another way to mark "Hey, come play with me!" would always be appreciated. ... Especially since I have "In Armor = IC" for Judge, but I'm expecting at some point for him to actually get out of his armor and show off that grandpa outfit I put together for him. ![]() RE: Proposal for Identifying Ourselves - -no longer matters- - 07-23-2015 (07-23-2015, 01:33 PM)Flickering Ember Wrote: Conversely, I almost never look at search info. Though, if I place myself for random RP I tend to make a few solo posts to give people hooks. If there's someone I see with 'walk ups welcome' and I want to find out more, I poke them via whispers! Some people have even done the same for me. It all works! I'm probably not going to start random RP without finding a character hook of some sort first. I've always kept an eye out for the "walk ups welcome" since the days I rped on WoW. I've had people actually turn away walk up RP because they weren't interested. A bigger pet peeve of mine are the people who do have it listed but then turn down the walk ups. Frustrating. RE: Proposal for Identifying Ourselves - Leggerless - 07-23-2015 Visual cue without shifting through multiple menus to verify someone's IC? Yes, please. More efficient than examining search info. Edit: Also shares the same color as the "online" symbol; an added bonus. If I'm standing around, I'm inspecting people. Zooming in on their characters, checking their gear, reading their search box. I mean it's just a habit, and though it is pretty boring to read RP'er fifty million times every so often you get a new gem, a nicely worded bit about the character or just something funny altogether. The other day I examined some Ishgardian Rp'er whose comment read "Pious in the streets, heretical in the sheets." I thought it was hilarious. I stopped mentioning walk ups welcomed long ago and now I have a bit about the character or even a quote from the character to give you a tease of what you're getting into. It's just a better hook as you said. Anyway, don't get me wrong guys. I fully support the idea and if I start seeing it gain traction I'll help it as much as I can, but in my experience... I'm just not sure it will. Anyway, two thumbs up, good luck getting off the ground. RE: Proposal for Identifying Ourselves - Alderique - 07-23-2015 This sounds like a good idea if the symbol isn't being used, though I'm always bothered when a game mechanic is appropriated to mean something else, and not everyone is in on it. I would suggest adding a note in your search info that says "Materia meld Icon means I'm in character", or something along those lines, so that people can confirm. RE: Proposal for Identifying Ourselves - Olofantur - 07-23-2015 An interesting idea! I'll hop aboard if only for the sake of potentially using this later on to bother SE into making an IC icon or something of the sort. (and wanting to get back into public RP more.) While i'm unable to participate on the forums due to an ancient banning, i'd be more than happy to spread the information around if an official thread was created on the forums. I think this would provide quite the boon to people who are not on Balmung, but are still interested in the idea of roleplaying. (Of course the stigma attached to it will still exist but c'est la vie.) |
