RE: Roleplaying of Allagan Descent - Ashe - 07-29-2015 I tried this and it did not work well...I love Allagan lore and one of my characters is like...obsessively obsessed with their technology and collects the fragments from Dalamud like a mad man. I had the "brilliant idea" of trying to do something similar to the Crystal Tower miqo'te guy with a character (that's why my Au Ra is a summoner...'cause I wanted the Allagan summoner robes on my once-Hyur). It was really difficult.  I only rp'd with my FC mates but I immediately realized that somehow conveying the Allagan memories from the genetic manipulation in ancestors was just...no.  Long story short...it's not IMPOSSIBLE to happen (there's plenty of lore bits that could be used to make up as to why your character) but very unlikely.  You could try it.  I tried it and failed. ....I later fantasia and name changed my Allagan to my Au Ra xPP RE: Roleplaying of Allagan Descent - Warren Castille - 07-29-2015 (07-29-2015, 09:06 AM)Auralily Wrote: I'm not looking for an interesting hook for my character, or anything along those lines. Echoing Hammersmith here. If a plotline falls in the woods, and nobody is in /say range, does it have a purpose? Equipping characters with hooks for no reason just dilutes the character. You can be plenty interesting without having a special template, and if you have a special template that doesn't add to a character, what's the point of doing it in the first place? "You have four arms and two asses!" "Nah, it's nothing." "You're an edlritch abomination, man!" "It's nothing, I swear." RE: Roleplaying of Allagan Descent - Auralily - 07-29-2015 To say I'm not trying to have a hook with Allagan heritage is not to say it'll never be brought up or used. It's saying that my character isn't going to revolve around her heritage. I personally don't believe one trait or another, whether personality, talents, or heritage should be the main focus of my character's development. My character should be developed by a life and the events that occurred, with heritage and culture forming how she thinks and who she is. As I said, I've decided against this idea. A combination of the obvious challenges and my dislike of red eyes in general, has made me decide a different heritage. Though I really appreciate all the input; definitely glad I asked before I used a fantasia to make it happen :) RE: Roleplaying of Allagan Descent - LiadansWhisper - 07-29-2015 (07-29-2015, 05:00 PM)Blue Wrote: It's just math. Unless someone has no ancestors whatsoever, it is mathematically plausible that within 2000 years you will be part of everyone's tree. Read the article I linked. It's bringing up stuff studied by people who literally do nothing but math every day of their lives, so I don't feel in the right to contradict them <_<; Every race cannot descend from this guy.  It's literally impossible, regardless of what your math tells you, as he lived after most of those races came into being (we're talking almost 5000 years after the dawn of the Greek civilization, which is a Johnny-come-lately to several other civilizations).  Now, can we be related to the same ancestors that he's related to?  Yes, of course, since every human being can trace our genetic line back to a single woman in Africa I forget how many tens of thousands of years ago. So, we are effectively all related to one another via Africa.  That does not, however, translate to being the descendant of an Egyptian king from 3100 BCE. Mhm, more specifically, That being said, I honestly see no harm in it. As people have said, it's more than plausible to be descended from the Allagans. It was an empire that nearly reached across all of Hydaelyn at it's peak. If you will it, there's ways to explain it without being far fetched at all. I know the OP has already said they've abandoned the idea, but... for the record and for anyone else lurking who may be considering... I agree with Merri. I say more power to ya. RE: Roleplaying of Allagan Descent - Auralily - 08-22-2015 Well, thanks still! I thought it could be fun, but decided against it. I use a side effect of a potion taken when younger for my different coloured eyes. Allagan could have been a lot of fun, but someone had a point. A lot of my RP would be based on defending my choice. IC I could deal with, OoC... I've only met two people, but they were headache enough. |
