Usually I try to deal with IC issues through IC as well; it's a fairly large leap to assume that the player agrees with/condones their character's behaviour, just because characters are so diverse and most of us are quite far from the person we're portraying.
That said, if you've had negative interactions with this person OOC (and analyze carefully if the attitude in text you got was perceived or genuine; sometimes we perceive a tone that isn't intended thanks to the beast that is human nature), if this person's IC and OOC behaviour makes you genuinely uncomfortable or unhappy as a roleplayer, then I'd just try not to engage them and put them on ignore. Hobbies should be fun, and if both parties don't enjoy interaction with each other, then what's the point, right?
Kind of like some subject matter is just not stuff people want to roleplay with, sometimes it's best just to avoid rather than stress yourself out.

It used to bother me when I saw the F bomb dropped ICly. I tend to base vocabularies as much as possible around those I see the NPCs use, and that certainly isn't a word they use. But, then again, the game isn't rated for such language, so it's possible that Eorzeans drop the F bomb just like anyone else.
After awhile I just got used to it. Aysun may even use it from time to time. But excessively? If you can't say something IC to them and you tried talking to them OOCly about it, /blist may be the way to go.

My character's a country bumpkin where she grew up learning absolutely no manners and etiquette, so would swear a lot. But she's been doing it much less - really only using the.. harder profanities when angry or annoyed, though it slips every-now-and-again.
She'll say 'shite' a lot, though.

I see it like this: If someone who wasn't a roleplayer was dropping the C-word over and over again in one spot, they would get reported BY roleplayers. It's completely hypocritical of the RP community to think it's suddenly okay for US just because we're acting.
THe game has no such rule on the difference and people can still see your foul language even as a roleplayer.
There's a reason that movies with that word are rated "R".
The occasional swear I'm not going to get on anyones butt about (OOCly or ICly) but for Gods sake, this is a video game - Tone it the eff down.

To be fair, I knew what that word was and was using it in first grade. Â Honestly, would it be better if he was calling someone a "vagina?"
My problem with it isn't that profanity offends my delicate sensibilities, but that he's just doing it wrong. Â You can't just throw profanity into a conversation and suddenly you sound cool.
Especially people that use it as an adjective, e.g. "cunting door frame!" Â I've heard it, and it needs to stop. Â It needs to stop in your brain before it becomes a spontaneous utterance and should make you slam your own face into the nearest gypsum wallboard before you say something that sounds that stupid.
Yeah, that's how you do it, Duke!

How did you approach them and how did they respond exactly?
If it was something along the lines of "my character is a just not a great guy and I'm depicting him this way to illustrate that" then I can see the need for tolerating it and/or removing yourself from the situation if you can't handle the content - though I admit that a little limitation is necessary in public RP, and a light touch is often enough to get the point across. My own character is a bit of a jerk and I make it a point to demonstrate that yes, he really is one sometimes.
Also, this game does provide a profanity filter. It is a tool designed to prevent you seeing anything definitively offensive, and I notice that fairly often people flat out forget it even exists.
If they attacked you personally for simply opening a dialogue then they just need to be blisted.
EDIT: Nevermind, I see that you did specify how they responded. I say either use the chat filter, remove yourself from RP that they are present in, or blist. I feel like just turning on the chat filter is likely the best solution, but that's just me.

I'll be the first to say it that I curse. A lot. I also realize it's vulgar but it usually comes out when I get upset... or annoyed... which is a lot >_>; Most of them are a swearing at a situation and not a person, which is when I find it offensive. Other times I do it to people who I have an actual relationship wherein we know our boundaries.
That said I think I was inside Quicksand to see this c--t word used and while I didn't say anything to the person I did think about how utterly ridiculous it was that it was used in the first place. It don't really see its reason or... origin? to be used in Eorzea but that is just my opinion. Plus it's a word that is directly slurring someone or a character which is what I find distasteful.
I use blacklist liberally, especially recently in Quicksand because I've felt like people have been trying to annoy/harass people who are genuinely RPing. If they're RPing an ass, then all the more reason to blacklist cause I'd have ignored them anyhow. To be honest though, there is a censor filter so I never understood why Square would make it reportable or not? Why make it so you can turn off the filter but then just report a person for it? Unless it was someone using choice spelling or words not caught by the filter...?

Ooooh, I'm perfectly aware of the profanity filter. And I'm also aware that it has it's little quirks and will occasionally bleep out part of words because it perceives that someone is trying to get around the filter (had one instance where it attacked a word that ended with "sh" and then the word "it" afterwards... "wash it"?, "finish it"? something along those lines). I used to play a game years ago that had a mandatory filter and it would attack the silliest of things: shoes... basement... farther... Saturday... Spica (this one being the name of one of the game's SERVERS), so I get twitchy about filters.Â
And again, I'm not throwing a fit over all swearing. I swear, my character swears. If this particular word had been used once or twice in a whole conversation, I wouldn't have noticed. It was the excessive use in the short periods of time that I've been around this player that I found offensive.

Aaaanyways. Person is on /blist, and if the person wants to try and RP to me, hopefully someone will nudge me and I'll pull them off the list to see what they want. Ultimately, it saves my husband the hassle of dealing with me when I get irritated.

 I didn't have a death wish!  I was smart enough in first grade to keep my filthy language where it belongs, on the playground.Anyway, if he's used that word that many times, have you thought that maybe he has some kind of condition.  I know if I'd said cunt thirty times in thirty minutes and Guinness people weren't standing near me with a stopwatch, people would think I'd gotten lost from my care assistant.

Hah, well... having known and worked with people who had genuine Tourette's syndrome... the profanity thing isn't as common as media makes you think. Most people are just twitchy. A very small percentage stutter, restate partial phrases, or have random vocalizations. And while it can transfer into sign language, it wouldn't transfer to writing/typing. Same with someone with a form of coprolalia.
Even if the person was RPing someone with Tourette's or coprolalia, the excessive use would've been outside and without any context... and there was plenty of context.
