RE: Fourth wall type things - Kage - 06-18-2014

Kage does not understand where these quotes are coming from nor does Kage know the reference. At all. Nope. He does recognize that they are references but not what. So he shall just sit at work. Wishing he was a cool kid.

Firefly, Dirty Harry, The Matrix. Smile

I've been able to get some Scott Pilgrim and Star Wars references off IC before, too, though one of my favorite ones was from Wicked:

L'yhta Mahre: Oh! I love those pointy hats! They're so... sharp!

RE: Fourth wall type things - Kage - 06-18-2014

Totally got the Firefly one and The Matrix.

Not sure about Osric's though, which were the ones I was aiming for. Mostly >.>;

Speaking of the flavor text of FFXIV and movies...
I'm also expecting lots of Frozen jokes and references in FFXIV when Shiva starts getting more story time.

I got to see Lady Crofte say "We do what we must because we can" without a single trace of irony.

Coatleque: "I /never/ jest, Ser!"
(edit) she said in jest, while off-duty.

It usually depends on the person for me, and how comfortable I am around others! If it's someone new, I'll try to be formal with mistakes. If it's someone I am comfortable with, then I might joke around and tease!

RE: Fourth wall type things - Crisiet - 06-18-2014

I like to make semi-OOC jokes in emotes while roleplaying. Not gotten any angry whispers about it yet!

Something I don't really like doing is bracket corrections in /say. If I make a typo I'll correct it in /em.

Usually something like "Crisiet Liautroix did not just hand-spasm and definitely said [insert intended word here]." If it's not too bad or it's a grammar derp rather than a typo, "Crisiet Liautroix has a firm grasp of englandish." Or something equally silly.

I find I'm happiest when I don't take anything too seriously. Some'll like it, some wont. Happens!

RE: Fourth wall type things - Verad - 06-18-2014

My character literally sells plot devices. My relationship with the fourth wall and preserving its structural integrity is, accordingly, quite spotty. Correcting a spelling mistake or a misunderstanding about something that was mentioned in a post hardly even rates.

On that note, I... have a confession to make.

The original reason behind blaming Askier for everything was because the man is notoriously frequent when it comes to typos. His custom emotes, particularly the long ones, tend to be littered with them, and his propensity for making them is such that he might make one, go back to fix it with the standard (  *) format, and his "fix" will frequently, in and of itself, be a typo.

Ex:

Askier Mergrey turns and chcks the bom at Osric Melkire.
Askier Mergrey: chicks* ))
Askier Mergrey: bomb* ))
Askier Mergrey: chucks* ))

Quite a few of us hang out in Vent, and we started noticing a while back that our own mastery over the English language began slipping whenever he was present in-game. We'd start making our own typos, leaving out quotation marks, sending mistells, etc.

This only got worse, because it eventually progressed to the point where him just being present in Vent was enough to screw us over. That then progressed to someone merely mentioning him, to the mere thought of him, and finally just the mere fact of having associated with him was enough to have us butchering the English language.

We think it's some sort of disease that people contract once they come into contact with him; be warned.

So if you're ever walking around, and you see something along the lines of...

Osric Melkire: "That did not just happen.
Osric Melkire: " *
Osric Melkire blames Askier.

...now you know why.

Disclaimer: I share this story because A, I know Askier well enough to say with confidence that he'd get a laugh out of someone finally sharing this story rather than be pissed at someone taking the mickey out of him, and because B, my name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, son to a dying language and a creditor of many an OoC headache induced by IC events, and I will exact my vengeance, in this life or in RP.

Osric, I'm going to add "Grammarfailitis" to Jin'li's list of infectious disease. =p

Though, I don't know which is more embarrassing... the fact Osric spilled the secret or the fact that my university diploma hanging on the wall claims I have a degree in English Linguistics >.< Either way though, we find great amusment in it. Rolleyes

It's true though.  The amount of misspelled words and missing punctuation produced by the tips of my fingers -can- border on the ludicrous, but, personally, misspelling has never been a huge deal breaker for me when it comes to rp and posting in-game.

I mean, if it did bother me, I would be a raging hypocrite.  And two, I understand that some people, myself counted amongst them, often get overly eager to post a reply quickly to not keep people waiting and type faster than they should.  Full confession, this is why I make so many errors while posting,  but can write a book without them. Lol.

Only time typos are an issue is when the wrong message is conveyed and a correction is needed to get the original point across.  Otherwise, if I see a spelling error in another player's post, I say nothing.

As an aside, typos can often be hilarious. Wink

...I'll go now.

...AM I NOT MERCILESS?!

STOP. IT. !!!

Osric, you had best stop before Jin'li has to get all kind on your masked self Tongue

This is about what I do. If I am comfortable or Rping with a bud I tend to slip a little bit of related humor.

RE: Fourth wall type things - Jancis - 06-20-2014

I love it when people knock on the fourth wall. It's great when CC drops in lines from pop culture in a serious fashion like an Easter Egg. Tasty little eggs hidden around the Rock Horror Picture set...

I don't really care about doing corrections unless the statement is way too confusing without it; just doesn't seem that important to draw attention to otherwise.

I found most times when I make a mistake people won't notice it unless I point it out. People typically read what is intended anyway.

Especially in huge gatherings I have trouble reading as it is so let typos slide. Too much text to keep up with in those cases.

RE: Fourth wall type things - Eva - 06-20-2014

Wow what a great topic this is!

I'm probably in a minority that prefers as little taint as possible to the sense of immersion, though I don't mind allusions and references to things out of game - e.g. movies and novels and such as has already been mentioned.

Our company uses its /fc channel for (among other things) OOC commentary on RP and I often find this to be distracting and sometimes have to filter it. Other LS's I have/do belong[ed] to keep it all in the same channel. And this is okay too, but I've found that it sometimes causes a hiccup in the sense of immersion when all of the scene stops to sort of OOCly acknowledge a funny or what-have-you, and I usually feel an ambivalent blending of joy and annoyance at these things. On the one hand, it is funny and worthy of a chuckle. On the other, it also interrupted the scene. Ideally - and this is just one RPer's opinion - I prefer when footnotes are made and then the comment that potentially sparks the OOC dialogue is acknowledged as such later after the scene is over or on a forum post or such. But that is just me, and I'm well aware it's probably not the most popular opinion. I just don't like the breaking of immersion.

As for typos, they have never bothered me. We had a member in our XI group who butchered the english language with reckless abandon, but I understood her meaning almost all of the time, though she beat herself up about it and corrected herself a lot. And the corrections are more glaring/disruptive than the typo itself. So I am sometimes more troubled by the effort taken to correct the mistakes (which 99% of the time I think most people know what is intended anyway). I'm guilty of correcting my own from time to time, but I try to just let them go if they're not going to be confusing or something. If I misplace a character's name with another's or such though, I'll correct it.

There is one other sort of 'error' of which I find myself frequently guilty. We are a RPing couple and we sort of share both of our main characters. The mannerisms of one character (notably Ben for the handful who may have met him) are such that he speaks a particular way, and my fairer half has this down to a science where I still falter from time to time. Specifically the guy doesn't use contractions when he speaks and is very proper and that doesn't come as naturally to me.

Blynbhar: "I'll be there momentarily. Don't panic."
Blynbhar: ((*I will / *Do not))

Bugs me a little because when he talks it feels like it flows very naturally - for the character. But when I correct it (and I know he wouldn't speak with contractions like that) I feel like I'm casting a spotlight on it like it's weird or different, even though it's weird that he would say it the first way.

Anyway... great discussion so far!! I love reading everyones' opinions. Thumbsup
