They are not small.Yes I have and I've seen em. You see a Roe with maddening dagger or cobalt basalards and you will lol The level 50 daggers no matter which one are all oversized (SL knives are bigger than the sword relic) so you'd more likely call those short swords than actual daggers. Just an observation, not saying you can't pull it off. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Zyrusticae - 12-28-2014 (12-28-2014, 03:22 PM)Lilithium Wrote: Lalafells as tanks. Meh. Just can't see it as an IC thing. Then you have a game like Blade & Soul where Destroyer is exclusive to the big race (Gon) and the small race (Lyn) can't roll as Kung-Fu Master, Assassin, or regular Blade Master (they have their own racial variant with more magic emphasis) just because of this exact problem. Personally, I prefer to have the option available. Even if some people can't wrap their heads around it, it's just too limiting to only be able to play classes that "make sense" for the character's physical size, especially when the game has an out in the form of the metaphysical medium that permeates the entire universe (aether, ki/chi, the Force, reiatsu, chakra, whatever the hell you wanna call it). That being said, I still like to play my characters as at least making some semblance of sense for what they're doing, i.e. if she's a melee combatant she's going to have a really good build with good muscle definition, low body fat, etc., etc. I'm especially not a fan of flabby, soft-looking girls going toe-to-toe with others in melee combat. It's just wrong. Yet it's so bloody common because the girls are designed to look pretty rather than look like they can handle themselves. But I digress. Getting back to the topic, I do tend towards race/class combinations that make sense for the characters' builds, but I do also enjoy subversions to a degree. Seeing someone underestimate someone else because of their size and then paying for it is quite fun, after all... at least, until it gets overused. But anything can be worked to death if repeated often enough with no nuance or care. As far as in-game classes go... yeah, I pretty much only level the classes that make sense for my character. It's completely unnecessary and my character doesn't use any job abilities anyway, but it's something I just like to do. Because I can. In T'rahnu's case she simply knows no magic whatsoever, in exchange for physical abilities that could be classed as 'extraordinary'. I play her as a weapon master who is a jack-of-all-trades but not necessarily a master of any particular fighting style (that being said, her knowledge of so many combat styles means she has a natural advantage against any opponent whose style she can recognize, which is most of them). I also make sure she's old enough ICly to where this actually makes some semblance of sense. ![]() That being said, I still play her as her jobs in-game because obviously it would be really rude of me to compromise the play of my party members just for the sake of staying IC. She doesn't use Bardsong or Defiance or Mudra ICly but these things are necessary to keep up with other players so I'll just bite the bullet and keep at it. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Jana - 12-28-2014 Part of the reason I picked up Tera was because (at launch) all classes were available to all races and genders. I personally really like the contrast when a small-framed character gets a big weapon or a large-framed characters gets to be speedy and agile. I don't have any real "preference" for matching races with classes in this game either; game NPCs tend to fill in the blanks anyway. ![]() RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Kismet - 12-28-2014 (12-28-2014, 06:26 PM)Jana Wrote: Part of the reason I picked up Tera was because (at launch) all classes were available to all races and genders. There is something really satisfying about seeing a tiny person kick major ass. ![]() On one hand, I do like to see a bit of logic between what a person is capable of and their build... sometimes. On another hand, some things can be justified if they're explained well, handled with enough creativity, and/or if people just open their minds a bit. Lalafell are a little different in this regard (for me) because SE wants us to take them seriously... but then they give them such cutesy emotes and voices. It's kind of jarring, especially whenever I see Lalafell villians. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - K'nahli - 12-28-2014 It's just not RP-related for me. Seeing a tiny lalafel charge headlong into danger and carry the team to victory is just too cute and too awesome for words(back when Garuda extreme was still tough I found it so inspiring, haha). I love lala tanks. If I were to take them and their size seriously then I'd say lalafels have no business being anything other than mages. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - TheLastCandle - 12-28-2014 Tiny people who kick ass are wonderful. I keep having this itch to play a serious Lalafell similar to a halfling rogue I played in D&D and on an NWN persistent world in the past. I think the Machinist job is going to be the catalyst I needed to really get that going. I can't wait. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Atoli - 12-28-2014 Tying in the first question with the bonus - Au Ra Astrologian. *Dreamy sigh* RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Kellach Woods - 12-28-2014 This thread gave me the idea to roll an IC Male Roe, likely fairly huge, and go straight to Rogue/Ninja. Already have a basic backstory for it, too - though it borrows some cliché tropes of an an accident then overcoming the disability throughout rigorous training and dedicating themselves to another path. My second Au Ra, a female, won't really have a story of her own, not one that will be RP'd anyways(and therefore just some fluff for myself), so I have given her significantly less thought. I might make her a Dragoon. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Kellach Woods - 12-28-2014 I'll be honest here - I like bending stuff. NEVER tell me "this can't be done" or "this goes against the lore" or "this would be highly inefficient" because I will find that little damned piece that says I can do it, I will do it, and I will laugh/cough all the way to the bank getting some awesome RP and tells complimenting me on my character while you hold that L(ore) in your chest. So, as such, here we go : Hyur Midlander - Anything goes here, really. Not much we can say that Midlanders can't do. Kell being a Midlander I'm already having him study various paths anyway (primarily because I can't make an alt on Balmung ;.; ) Highlander - Lancer/Dragoon. According to the map Ala Mhigo is close enough to Ishgarde that I could see one heading to Grid/Coerthas and aligning themselves with the Lancers' guild, then bullshitting my way into DRG. Elezen Wildwood - Gladiator/Paladin. They have the dedication to become Paladins out the gate for sure and I could definitely see it. Duskwight - Marauder/Warrior - Thaumaturge/Black Mage. Live in seclusion away from society? Check. Have a possible hate-on for the Wildwood and Gridania? Check. Want to ravage whatever is in their way and would be fairly effective against these fucking trees? Triple check. Lalafell Plainsfolk - Marauder/Warrior - Archer/Bard. People give others shit for running anything physical with Lalas, when the Plainsfolk are a common sight within the Yellowjackets of Limsa Lominsa. Sorry but y'all are wrong to be hatin' on my Lala bros. Archer/Bard is mostly because I plan on having my 2nd or 3rd character as a Lala bard, though in the bard sense, not the job sense. Still carry around a bow though. Dunesfolk - Arcanist/Summoner/Scholar - Gladiator/Paladin - The Scholar line seems heavily for Dunesfolk, who are mostly loners who want nothing to do with others and just want to count coin and research all day. However, one who has seen action and became a Summoner would be an interesting sight. In addition, Laladins remain the most noble of creatures. Miqo'te Seekers of the Sun - Marauder/Warrior - Most of them live in the desert. True. Still, what better way to show your superiority as a future Nuhn but currently Tia than CRUSHING THE FUCK OUT OF YOUR OPPONENT WITH A MASSIVE AXE. Only way I'd ever play Miqo, and Kell is my Warrior, so none of that will ever be happening Keepers of the Moon - Thaumaturge/Black Mage - Best way to stick it to Gridania and their silly anti-poaching laws would be to study the one art that goes counters to their conjury, and set some Wood Wailers on fire. Roegadyns Sea Wolves - Pugilist/Monk - Why? There are several ways to fight with a closed fist, and a dude that's as big as an ogre wanting to learn how to move smart? Gonna be a rough and tumble powerhouse. Plus, they got good balance from their experience on the sea, and balance is definitely needed for your average PUG/MNK moves. Hellsguard - Conjurer/White Mage - Because we don't know of the traditions of these Abalathia's Spine people and I'm pretty damn sure they don't all pick up a halberd. I could see one wanting to hear the mountain as the conjurers do the forest, and losing themselves into study of the Conjurer's art. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Kage - 12-28-2014 Forever Lalafell. Forever Paladin/Gladiator / Marauder/Warrior. Long live the tiny tanks. RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Nebbs - 12-29-2014 On things like Lalafell tanks.. Maybe, just squint a bit with your imaginations and the world becomes more fantastic with Moogles and such. Suddenly great knights in compact form is not such a stretch? I get some like more realistic worlds/RP but the game itself does not mirror our RL world so you will find things to discount all over the shop. Maybe once in a while we all have to squint to accept another views. *hugs* RE: What Race+Class/Job combination do you prefer? - Kellach Woods - 12-29-2014 IT'S NOT THE SIZE OF THE KNIGHT IN THE FIGHT, BUT THE SIZE OF THE FIGHT IN THE KNIGHT! But for realsies, if Papalymo can be head of the Sultansworn I'd say all arguments about Laladins are invalidated via lore. And Alka Zolka smartest Marauder, too. Still fairly baller in a fight too. Cute characters with huge weapons (especially axes) are a weakness of mine, and Tera made that come true. Ugh, I miss Tera, even if I get bored of it fast. I'm always amused to see lalafell tanks, I don't see why that wouldn't work. I don't play much anymore, but I'm addicted to the comedic (and dramatic) value of pairing a physical class with a tiny character, thus I'm much more fond of Melee Lalas than Caster/Ranged Lalas. Although technically suboptimal for Monk, I find the difference of a few HP or STR barely makes a difference in endgame content, (For me at least.) My main and secondary were Elin Warrior and Elin Berserker in that game, though I also had Human and Popori characters. |
