Actually, Nara'li fits the lore as well, 3rd son rather than 2nd son though.

RE: Roleplaying Name Question - Marisa - 04-06-2015

I'm wondering how many people have avoided me because of my character's name... I know Orrin Halgren was a bit confused by my entire deal the other night. He's a cool guy though, so he just went with it. Kinda got in my head, though. Now I've spent like 3 days wondering how many other people are thinking it, but just haven't said anything?

RE: Roleplaying Name Question - Meishali - 04-06-2015

Well, that is certainly one thread I could butt in.

I keep asking myself. Is it is obvious that Lucaell's "name" is... not her real name? Being a new player and all, I am often wondering what people think of me when they see my RPer tag in my priv info IG. After reading my wiki entry, it should all be clear (and the reason is sillier than it sounds), but do people do that?

I also do wonder if Lucile Townsend is not too modern for an FFXIV's midlander. Maybe I'm over-thinking it, but there are times I do not really feel like what I'm doing is "correct". But in the end, what really matters is the RP* experience I'm willing to provide to the people meeting me, and the people willing to meet me. These are details not worth stressing over after some time (but I somehow still do even after RPing with fairly nice people from the forum this evening).

No matter what kind of RP you do, people will always eventually RP with you, at least a little. Especially if your name isn't "Ducky McLaine", see what I mean?

There's an incredibly wide variety of names outside lore conventions on the wiki, and from what I've seen... These people do RP!

It has already been said, but giving a shot to all RPers dropping by is, in my opinion, the best thing to do. I always check up chars on the wiki when I get aggro'd in game, so hopefully I get to know who I am dealing with. In return, I secretly hope they get to do the same with me.

TL;DR: Ryanto, Nara'to, your characters look fantastic and well-written, don't let weeaboos and nit-picky jerks ruin your whole roleplay experience. There's a difference between playing half-breeds, having an in-lore username resembling some kind of shounen hero's and actually playing a custom primal mastering ninjutsu trapped in a Lalafell-Elezen half breed's body named "Ifritcool Rakakukotsukishi".

Can the name you give your character be the basis for whether others will roleplay with you or not?

I'm going to answer your question with a question.
Which do you think sounds more appealing, "Warren Castille", or "Tanky Awesomeknight?"

This, really.

RE: Roleplaying Name Question - ArmachiA - 04-06-2015

I admit I roll my eyes just slightly whenever I see yet another Japanese name, but that's my own personal bias from being in the Jpop fandom for so long and having to defend that DOESN'T make you a Weeaboo you just like the music GOD.

But it's only a slight eyeroll. Hell, Armi's current beau's name is vaguely Japanese.

No name is going to make me not RP with you, no matter how lore inappropriate, unless it's like SUPER offensive or something. It will make me PAUSE, sure, but if you're eager to RP and aren't being a troll, I'll get over it. I mean, Armi's name could be considered iffy itself in some circles (And Loki's - even if it's not her real name - DEFINITELY is.)

It's your actions, not your name.

So that means I can invite Foamy to the FC after all, Armi?

RE: Roleplaying Name Question - Nara'to - 04-08-2015

I thank you all for keeping my thread alive and voicing your own experiences and opinions.  I truly appreciate it.

I honestly never considered Nara'li but now that you mention it I really like that name.  Nara'to just stuck to me for some reason and I did go by lore naming.  I wanted to go with something that would make the roleplaying community look at my name and be relieved that a new player wanted to go the lore friendly route.

Still though, you guys are making Balmung more enjoyable to be on with each passing day.  Now if I could just find an FC and Linkshell that was active and wasn't centered around a small group of friends I'd be set.  Sadly this seems to be the norm here.  Not that it's wrong or anything, just difficult to get to know anyone when they won't give you the time of day outside their circle of friends.  I'm happy everyone gets along though, it's nice to see it.  I hope to one day be as blessed as the rest of them ^.^

I name almost all of my RP characters after Japanese temples, if possible.  I do this because I'm crap at names and I happen to be Japanese-American.  But I know about as much of my ancestral culture as the average American (almost nothing at all).

I've used Daitoku-ji in a number of games, spelled "D'aito Kuji" in this game.  I think it was Daitoku'ji in SWTOR.  I think it's better than some of my other choices in various games which were mostly all versions of j-pop idols or homages to obscure characters from popular media.

RE: Roleplaying Name Question - McBeefâ„¢ - 04-08-2015

I went around with a character named Natalie Mcbeef for over a year, so I don't think you'll be shunned.

Names are names, in the real world people don't follow the naming conventions, and others have silly names within them. (Ben Dover.... heh, heh heh.)

These people get along fine. I wouldn't worry so much!

RE: Roleplaying Name Question - SicketySix - 04-08-2015

When it comes to RP names, they don't really bother me unless we get into the whole "Bigtitties Mcbuttflapper" then I have an issue.

So I'd say your name is fine......

We have someone named Scruffy The'Janitor. Do what you do. Tongue

I think the friends thing just happens the longer you're around people. When I see FCs or Linkshells starting up, either it's mostly randoms or people who were randoms once upon a time -- but the key there is to be persistent and aware. Just because you have the same interest as someone doesn't mean you're interested in the same thing (if that makes sense). The goal is to find a group that you either naturally jive with or are willing to put forth the effort with (if you don't want to put forth the effort, chances are you wouldn't get along with them anyways), because whether they're a cohesive group or not, it generally does take some time.

Hell, I mean, as an example. In another place far, far away, a girl once joined what was a cohesive community. I seriously did not like her at first. But she was spunky and persistent, friendly and took concrits like a champ. Now she's one of my favorite writer people. I had to get to know her, and she was willing to let me get to know her.

THAT SAID

I didn't even think naruto until you mentioned anime in the first post. I was like 'nara'to? what's wrong with that?'

Heh - I'm more into Momorio Clover Z and BerryZ (or was, I guess they've broke up) but MM is super good & AKB48 is like a staple.  I'll be seeing Babymetal live in Chicago but I've not been much of a fan of the main group Sakura Gakuin.

Anyway, now that I've embarrassed myself enough, I'll be moving on.

RE: Roleplaying Name Question - Nara'to - 04-09-2015

The continued responses are greatly appreciated and I thank you all for taking the time to do so.

All of these responses have helped me better understand how people would think about a name and for that I can not thank you all enough.  I feel immensely better about the name I chose to give to my creation.

The more I keep thinking on this the more ideas I have been brewing concerning my character and his back story so everything said in this thread has really given me ideas and helped me develop my character more and more.

I just wish I could bump into people who aren't busy.  When I see someone roleplaying I can't help but smile, watch the conversation take place then move along.  Yes I'm sad because I can't seem to find any roleplayers that aren't taken but I am happy because of the activity going on around me.

I won't give up, I'll continue roaming Ul'dah and the Quicksand nightly until I can finally get Nara'to into this wonderful world in character.  Until then I shall continue fine tuning him in hopes that when fate has finally blessed me what I present to everyone is a genuine character that can be enjoyed by everyone. I will say he wears glasses so all of you who enjoy characters with this concept feel free to tackle him should you see him ^.^

Thank you all very much.
