RE: Spahro's Guide to Being Popular - DoomsdayClock - 04-23-2015 An open world policy had always helped me. Never excluding or avoiding folks based on style or differing ideas on lore gave me more acess...and in turn made me more accessible to those around me. Its not for everyone I suppose, but does wonders for actual community building. You can do more to help someone lore and style wise by interacting and teaching than you ever can by flaming or ignoring them. Then they could become a functional member of rp society... Awhile back, someone wanted to RP as the daughter of Zeus that somehow has been transported to Eorzea. In no way does that mesh with any lore or with this game at all. And if she chooses to RP that out, I will not try to stop her. She bought the game, it's her subscription she pays. That being said, I would avoid her when IC simply because that is way to immersion shattering. That being said, I have no problem partying up with her and running content etc OOC. I think to many people associate dislike for their RP character, as a dislike of them OOC. Which in my case, is simply not true. Awhile back, someone wanted to RP as the daughter of Zeus that somehow has been transported to Eorzea. In no way does that mesh with any lore or with this game at all. This has been my approach, usually. If there's something that my character (not necessarily me) would find hard to swallow, then... why not run with it? You might be surprised at how bumping into a crazy adventurer with a few tall tales can make for some interesting interaction. I must also agree on this. I always give new people the benefit of the doubt, keep myself open to new contacts, look for ways to expand my RP network. If my RP style does not mesh with someone else's, I don't outright ignore them - I just limit IC contact to what is absolutely pertinent. Another side to this is a bad (in-character) first impression. I can point back to that smear article that Eva paid Spahro to write. Crofte has run across many people who on first impression will go right to that and deride her for it. Before I can even get to know these people, Crofte is already snubbing them for their rudeness. RE: Spahro's Guide to Being Popular - SicketySix - 04-23-2015 It's hard for me to mesh when someone thinks they are the Goddess of a God that does not even exist. And at the time it wasn't even a discussion about whether she SHOULD rp as that, but more why nobody had much contact with her outside of simple one-liner conversations. This is a wonderful way to make new RP friends, to expand your RP networks, and find yourself swimming in hooks and plots and the rest of that. Popularity, if we want to call it that, takes effort - can't be popular if you can't engage and interact with people. Bad interactions will come along with the good of course, but being open to the possibility of interaction is hella important. I feel that these two statements actually embody the majority of RPers in this community and a great many in game as well. That is why I'm so shocked that we need things like the OP created, as amusing as it is. Well said, both of you. I've personally found that being able to establish some sort of rapport IC makes it easier to talk about things on an OOC level. I would wonder if your character would be at all curious why there's some lady going on about some weird religion. Too much time with the beastmen? Maybe something one of those weird Domans brought across the sea? Maybe she's been exposed to some bad somnus or something? There's bound to be a story in there. Maybe they don't actually care at all, which is fine. I suppose I wonder if an OOC dismissal of the concept/player should be the same as an IC dismissal of the character? Granted there are those who react very badly to any sort of critique even from someone that's had some exposure to their character, but hey, least someone tried, y'know? Â Nobody's a lore expert on every single thing, and there are a lot of neat opportunities for RP with some really interesting concepts. Â Sometimes it's more interesting to find explanations than dismissal.
Did you know that religion plays an integral part in many Final Fantasy games, from the Church of Yevon in FFX to Leviathan Worship in FFVII to hints of Christianity in the original Final Fantasy? Â When you add the character of Gilgamesh to this you end up with a really cool explanation for her character.
Gilgamesh has been the same character throughout all of his Final Fantasy appearances, and he's the most common recurring character in the series. Â Gilgamesh is a dimension hopping weapons collector looking for the legendary Masamune in the universes of each of the games, and has been the same, consistent person every time.
Thinking about that, it's not too hard to think that someone from a universe where the Greek Pantheon existed might have been dimension hopped, since there is precedent, and the children of gods is certainly not too out of the question for most Final Fantasy themes.
If that's not your cup of tea though, that's okay! You don't have to accept things that make you uncomfortable just like she doesn't have to change her character to make you more comfortable. Â Nobody has to do anything, but a little bit of compromise can lead to some amazing things.
