Because of that, it'd almost be silly for him not to do all the jobs. That being said, just because he knows how to do something, doesn't mean he likes doing it. And there will be things that I as a player won't handle as well as others simply because I've focused more on other things.  Darien adequately summarizes some of my feelings on the subject. Although Kevaraan desires to learn everything to some degree, he'll probably be most focused on Lancer/Conjurer because he grew up with those and received knowledge from his parents throughout his childhood. (In addition to being a member of a mage-focused FC.) Because he can't focus, and because a guild probably won't be as good for him as one-on-one instruction. As I mentioned in another thread, Kevaraan has numerous quirks and weaknesses regarding how he handles aspects of certain disciplines. There's potential for IC instruction to alleviate those issues or introduce new ones, which I would welcome. But I need to wait for it to happen. Just because there's a 50 next to a class icon on my character's status doesn't make him a Grand Esteemed Master of a class. I expect to develop his strengths and weaknesses in classes through RP. The above principle is especially true for crafting and gathering, because there's no way he could master all the technical knowledge that those things entail while being more preoccupied with combat-oriented things. There's no way I as a player have any interest in learning and researching what goes into smithing or mining or textiles, for example, so I personally don't feel I can roleplay them accurately. My character will probably have some passing knowledge, as in "enough to fix his armor or make a decent piece that does the job but hardly more." Probably the only exception to this would be alchemy and botany, because his mother was an apothecary and he has a strong interest in it--and I'm interested in learning about medicine and their ingredients myself. What I focus on will change depending on the situation, but if it does change, his experience won't compensate. He won't suddenly be a master monk during a bar brawl, for example. RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Tempestwolf - 08-20-2013 Well as for my own IC progression, Zartyr will probably go pally and that will be his main focus, but as his experiences increase he will begin to branch out to learn other martial styles of combat, and maybe even pick up a little more magic on the way. But all will come back to his main and chosen job of pally. RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Kyrio Lamansque - 08-20-2013 Since a Duskwight is described as.. existing outside the bounds of society, doing things that society frowns on, I thought Marauder would fit perfectly. Then I found out it wasn't a DPS great weapon class. But a tank. I said . RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Bloodwillow - 08-20-2013 Bloodwillow will definately be all the martial classes that deem to fit her background.  Since my wife is a mage-y type, I think that will fit well too. The only pure tank class there is right now is PLD. RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - FreelanceWizard - 08-20-2013 Erm, MRD's a tank. Really. It queues as a tank, it does damage like a tank... it's higher DPS than a GLA, certainly, but nowhere near the DPS of a pure DPS class. The MRD is the "hit point sponge/damage enmity" offensive tank, while the GLA is the "high mitigation/effect enmity" defensive tank. Sounsyy can explain the mechanics of these at level 50 better than I can. RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Momoji Momochi - 08-20-2013 My character, Momoji (who will be a plainfolk on release to deal with a naming convention nightmare), is a young plainsfolk hailing from far of La Noscea that came to Ul'dah to study the art of Thaumaturgy at the temple of Nald'Thal. Momoji is a studious little bookworm who intends to become a loremaster of the arcane by studying all known branches of arcana, and then subsequently apply those teachings to the culinary arts. While not much of a writer, he dreams of being the author of a book called "Cooking with Fire I-III: A Thaumaturge's Guide to the Culinary Arts." I had already figured that I'd be leveling thaumaturge when I played the open beta. What I didn't anticipate was enjoying all the disciplines of magic in the game, so I changed up my character's back story to better fit my play style. I even went so far as to have him come from La Noscea instead of Thanalan like I originally planned. But I was only able to do all that because I haven't established my character yet. I'll probably end up playing Scholar, Summoner, Black Mage, and White Mage. As to which will be my focus at end game, that will take some more time to figure out. RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Noble_Einherjar - 08-20-2013 I doubt I'll call much attention to Amuro's class/job. He'll mainly be a gladiator/paladin, but I won't refer to him as such explicitly (in terms of RP), and he likely won't call himself either name. Maybe that will change, because normally I do RP whatever class I am in an MMO. But right now very little of who Amuro is as a person is connected to how he chooses to fight. RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Jove - 08-20-2013 Personally I think the game mechanics for classes reflect the RP aspect quite well, in the sense that by training different classes, you unlock techniques which can be used by your main go to class. So for example, Logan is a marauder, but it only makes sense for him to learn other fighting styles, even just a little so he can both put to use different techniques and styles and also to learn the various weaknesses of those methods of combat. I mean would it be so out of place for a marauder from Lominsa and familiar with fishing spears to take a shine to being a Lancer? Probably not unheard of. Likewise a lancer from Gridania would probably be pretty familiar with a chopping axe, and take a shine to the marauder style of fighting. At the end of the day both weapons are giant sticks with blades on the end. But you can apply that logic to different classes, magic users dabbling in other arts, crafters being proficient at making various items made up of different materials. My opinion is that everyone is really good at a few things, mediocre at a ton of things, and utterly hopeless with everything else. I mean it varies of course and sometimes you do get people who are godly (like Gandalf, I mean seriously, awesome at swords, staffs, magic, solo'd a Balrog, self raised? Guy is seriously OP, basically a time lord) but everyone has a weakness (Gandalf was totally fooled by Saruman. Gandalf kinda strikes me as a person who would reply to a Prince of Nigeria email) and I think weakness, or flaw is most important. I mean even if your character is really good at everything, it could still work as long as they have some flaw or weakness (I bet you can think of some characters who are extremely skilled, but reckless, costing them mistakes, or elitist about their abilities to the point of alienating everyone around them). Idk, for me, godmode is more a case of affecting others without consent and being infallible. There's a huge difference between claiming to be the best and being the best and there's nothing better than proving a show off wrong. Anyway, personal preference with Logan is to train up some weapon fighting classes, specialising in a couple of methods of engaging the enemy (no fisticuffs however). He might even do some crafting/collecting, being a survivalist, but as for anything magical? Isn't going to happen. RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Chakha Malqir - 08-20-2013 Virgil's ultimate goal is to become a Scholar. This has been his dream since childhood. When he was younger, Virgil didn't like being outside during the day due to the glaring brightness of the sunlight and the immaturity of the other children. So he mostly stayed indoors. His father decided, as Virgil wasn't interested in regular "kid" stuff and he wanted his son to grow and mature, he asked his friend, the guildmaster of the Arcanist's Guild, to watch him while he was out fishing. Ever since, Virgil spent every single day within the Arcanist's Guild, reading book after book on a wide variety of subjects. He also watched and looked at the guildmaster with the highest esteem as someone who was really smart and knew everything! This never truly stopped until he was 16 years old. He had since borrowed many mannerisms from the guildmaster (imitation is the greatest form of flattery, after all). However, one day, the guildmaster took him down into the deepest part of the Arcanist's Guild and told to hide until he came down to get him. Everyone then left. He could hear horrifying explosions outside and he did exactly as the guildmaster had asked, at least at first. After a couple of hours, he was afraid of what may have happened to the Guildmaster. He then left the box and headed back up and outside, trying to look for him. It was then that he looked up into the sky. It was dark, with a rain of fire crashing down over all of Eorzea. Too frightened to move, he just watched as his home was under assault from this horrifying force. It wasn't until the assistant guildmaster pulled him away and, summoning her Carbuncle, used its wind magic to divert a massive fireball into the sea. Virgil couldn't believe what he was witnessing. After the battle was over, Virgil noticed that the Guildmaster had vanished, and no one had given him a straight answer as to where he had gone, either because they had no idea themselves or to spare Virgil's feelings. He didn't know, but he did know that he wanted to become a scholar in order to find the guildmaster and rescue him from wherever he is. While he doesn't like the idea of the assistant Guildmaster taking the place of the Guildmaster until his return, Virgil does acknowledge that she will do some good, and that the position is only until the guildmaster returns. If anything, Virgil's goal to become a Scholar is to find his mentor, the Arcanist Guild's Guildmaster. His Arcanist studies have made him powerful and highly knowledgeable about magic of many forms, but he continues to study the other disciplines in order to get a better understanding of how all magic works. As such, he has studied the way of the Conjurer, and developing a better understanding of how Conjurers use the power of nature to channel their magical abilities as opposed to an Arcanist whose magic comes from the symbiotic relationship between Arcanist and Carbuncle, and has even chosen to study more about how a Thaumaturge harnesses his magical abilities by channeling one's own spirit into pure magic to be molded by a thaumaturge's scepter. He has even witnessed what happens in the events that a conjurer does not form a bond with nature and decides to use the power of healing despite that, and how it eats away at the conjurer's own life force. The pursuit of knowledge and the investigation into the disappearance of the Guildmaster are both top priorities of his, and he will use all of the magical energy he can access in order to find out the truth. I remember in 1.0 my guild was talking about WAR had better DPS than MNK and DRG. Was this changed or did they get it entirely wrong? Edit: Also sorta off topic here, but can you dye AF gear? I can't say how it was in 1.x, as I didn't really play it appreciably, but in ARR, MRD and WAR are definitely tanks. They have remarkably lower DPS than the DPS classes (excepting ACN, which is... the Soloist; it has no natural group role, despite being classed as DPS in the Duty Finder ). RE: In Character Class/Job decisions - Moltove - 08-20-2013 Molt will be primarily PUG...it's the first and strongest thing he's ever trained in, other than LNC/THF. I just try to look at his entire life on a timeline and plot out about when he started certain events, training classes included. I try to be realistic on what a year or two or five can do for someone focusing on something. I also consider what he would do on a day to day basis. I figure since fantasy characters don't (necessarily) have to go to work and especially don't have modern technology to take their attention away in their daily lives, that they basically have quite a bit more time on their hands for training and hobbies. MRD was pretty good as far as AoE dmg and maintaining multiple mobs. Because they are a tank class, they could take the hits. If a BLM ripped (as they love to do), then they don't last long at all...So I could see some validity to their argument but for the most part, they're DPS/OT tanks. I've never had them, as most people would want a BLM or two (or three!) instead. |
