The developers just go 'Oh, that's AD (as designed)' at which point those bugs become easter eggs and weird finds. In theory that would work but it depends on the bugs. A lot of the problem here is the volume of people. You can't test the floodwalls when it's calm as glass outside. And you can't find the bug fixes if people aren't finding the bugs for you. And you can't find bugs or bug fixes if the entire server is turned off. True this is what the betas are intended for but since we are past beta, they really can't fix the problems without the servers being online. It just seems like it would be easier to try a fix then open the servers and let people come in, if not, do it again. It just seems they're getting hopes up and trying to micro-correct it in tiny increments so that the servers might be able to hold juuuuust a bit more after the last person gets in there. I know that's impossible and ridiculous of me to think. ^.^; RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - lady2beetle - 09-04-2013 (09-04-2013, 02:57 PM)Siobhain Wrote: You're right. Someone told me years ago that the first sign that an MMO is failing is when they have to condense their servers. True or not, it's that reputation that every MMO wants to avoid at all costs and very few successfully avoid. I think that's what they are trying to do, honestly. TOR was the same way at launch. People screamed and bitched and screamed for them to open new servers and they finally had to do just that. It was, what, a year before they had to turn around and condense their servers again? Less than that, I think. It is for that reason that SE is trying to open the bare minimum of servers in that first month. Because they know that after the first month, the number of subscribers will drop off. And they can't afford the reputation of having to condense servers again only a month after launch. RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - Sigyn Shieldbreaker - 09-04-2013 Aren't they worried about how many people who are already playing or who haven't started yet getting too frustrated and leaving early? I mean, I imagine they must be and the game's only been out for what... a week and a half? But people are impatient. It seems like the cross-server thing they implemented on WoW which may exist in FF, would just help out so much with not having to worry so much about how many servers you have. I don't think anyone expected like twenty new servers, three just seems like such a small number, right? RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - Yloise - 09-04-2013 I was really hoping to get on Balmung but they have locked it to new characters. Gilgamesh too. *sniff sniff* I hope maybe a third server is picked? Gilgamesh too. There's been talk in other threads of people gathering on another server. The RPC won't support it, or advertise it - So that third server will get little to no 'new' players, but, it's a decent temporary fix. I'm sure someone else will post links to the threads, as I don't have them handy. RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - Yloise - 09-04-2013 I will keep my eyes out for that information. Thanks! The cross-server thing might help, but I would assume it would require hardware while will take time to implement. The problem with people leaving is that, as you said, they are impatient. But why are they leaving? Because they can't play. Given a month, that will be handled and all but the most stubborn ones will return. And if the game is still great, those most stubborn ones will be lured back by their friends. The players may be impatient, but SE isn't. ((On a side note, a coworker just came by and saw this website up and asked me about it - I might have another recruit! Mwahahahahaha)) RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - herotheory - 09-04-2013 Does this mean new characters won't be accepted at all on Gilgamesh and Balmung? Someone was telling me that they are monitoring all restricted servers in real-time and allowing new characters gradually. Is this true? RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - Yloise - 09-04-2013 Right now I just tried to make a new character, and Balmung and Gilgamesh are not accepting new characters at this time. The status update on the front of the patcher states a whole list of what is 'closed' to new players. At least my char on ifrixit(sp) will keep me occupied in the meantime. I'm asking if anyone knows if this restriction will be alleviated gradually. RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - Yloise - 09-04-2013 Speculating: I hope so. For a definite answer I am still looking through threads on the SE forums for clarification. RE: Regarding Results of Maintenance (Sep. 4) - somrue - 09-04-2013 do it eve online style. Sadly the only way I've seen new character to be made is right after maintenance but you have to be fast, my friend just barely got her character made when the game came out of maintenance last night, I logged in 2 mins after she did, and there was a que already. Eve isn't one big server though, they have hundreds and hundreds of instances supported by multiple servers, also they have more then one world now. I think it's like 5 Worlds? If one gets full or unbalanced they stuff you in another. |
