I'll put it out there that I'm ok rather people have a preference or not in terms of RL gender, especially if that person is new to RP. When I first started roleplaying, I wanted to be open because that was the politically correct thing to do. However, when I did actually learn the other person's gender, my IC and OOC interaction with them immediately changed.

Years later though, I honestly couldn't care less what you were. I won't ask, but if you offer, it won't affect me one bit either. I think this even goes beyond just the gender issue and more about being too quick to judge. I understand that most people had good intention of trying to help people keep their minds open and broaden options, but I think it does the exact opposite.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, but I find it somewhat sad to think about killing someone's desires RP just over this reason (so long as it wasn't intentionally malicious or predatory). I think after the first few posts, it should have just been left to that person to make their decision and move on. We could have easily turned away someone who would've been a great addition to the community just because of first impressions.

Most people can't seem to tell a boy lala apart from a girl lala most of the time, does that count?

I won't RP with any Scholars unless their player can accurately describe the pros and cons of the various battlefield strategies used during the American Civil War.

No because battle skirts are the worst thing in the world of Eorzea.

As the old thread is being mentioned here are my thoughts on the matter: OP seemed new and any statements made to help that he might not find the RP he may want using such methods. It might in fact help when looking for RP, that one disregard gender entirely from the mind and just roleplay with characters and see what happens.

This is my sentiment towards most RP in general. Almost think of RP in a "don't ask don't tell" sentiment with regards to gender (yes I know horrible). But my opinion is that if you truly cannot distinguish a writer's gender from the RP, that you never ask or think about it in the first place.

at times i wonder how short that series would be if every scene where the characters cry at each other was cut out

What if they're not american Cha cha. Is Scholar NA only? Is Scholar the class OF FREEDOM?

It would be impossible, though. Any show with a Smiths song for the intro must involve a plethora of tears.

I think this thread has run its course. It's also wildly off-topic at this point.
