RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - Warren Castille - 02-20-2015 I cut my teeth on Dragon Warrior and Ultima: Exodus on the NES. I've dabbled a lot with RPGs and JRPGs but my completion rate is pretty low; Once you start getting into flat-out-RNG fights I lose my patience. I've always loved and hated SMT for that reason. My first experience with it was Revelations: The Demon Slayer on the Game Boy Color and I've spent a lot of time with Nocturne and Strange Journey, but instant-kill attacks you have to pray never land always turn me off of the end game there. In terms of time-invested, I've got to say Morrowind was the game that ate me the most. Another game I've never "finished" I explored the hell out of that game, cheesily roleplaying through the whole thing myself and managing to uncover nearly every treasure without a guide or any sort of help. It stands out as one of my favorite "Get lost in the world" examples and will likely never be topped. RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - SessionZero - 02-20-2015 I am an ardent Elder Scrolls fan (ESO wai u suk bad T^T). I was always a big fan of the old Final Fantasy games, Tales series, Phantasy Star, Xenogears (but couldn't get into Saga or beyond), Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights... a good mix of JRPG and WRPG. Edit: Forgot Suikoden. RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - TheLastCandle - 02-20-2015 NWN persistent worlds were, hands down, the greatest RP experience I've ever had in any online game. I hope this upcoming Legends of the Swords Coast allows for a similar range of DM-run encounters, not just in combat but with skill checks and similar. My first RPGs were Dragon Warrior and the original Final Fantasy, actually. Oh, and gold cartridge Zelda, if that counts. I only mentioned Breath of Fire as one of my particular favorite non-Final Fantasy series, but I've played quite a few. Chrono Trigger/Cross, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Secret/Legend of Mana, Wild ARMs... actually, almost all of the "older" RPGs that have been mentioned so far in the thread. It started tapering off around... Morrowind, I think. I think MMOs started eating into my "normal RPG" time. Heck, the original Tactics Ogre: LUCT for the PSX was a personal favorite singular RPG game (which led to me getting the PSP remake), as was Shining Force II. But I also tried my hand a couple lesser known titles like the horribly translated Robotrek (I even did a gimmick LP of it a while back), Chrysalis, and Legacy of the Wizard. Oh, and Harvest Moon is considered an RPG, too. So that's one a bunch could add to their lists. I -love- lots of games but I've actually only seen the credits for very few of them. Games/Series I really enjoyed and have mentioned liking: Golden Sun Tales Suikoden Wild Arms Mother Series Star Ocean Bahamut Lagoon Legend of Heroes Persona Dragon Quest Monsters Xenogears Chrono Trigger Chrono Cross Breath of Fire Fire Emblem Legend of Zelda Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories Mana Series Legend of Dragoon I'll stop there. I've only finished: Chrono Trigger, Bahamut Lagoon (up to ReBirth cause fuck default decks), Secret of Mana, ONE of the Breath of Fire SNES games, Earthbound, Mother 3, one of the GBC Dragon Quest/Warriors Monsters, First Golden Sun, Suikoden Tierkreis. Oh and cause it was mentioned: Shining Force remake RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - Gegenji - 02-20-2015 I will quietly admit that the advent of the Let's Play has killed a lot of my drive to play a game unless it looks REALLY GOOD (Bastion and Revengeance being a couple examples of this). The Disgaea series, for example, is one that I tried initially... and then just went and looked up LPs for the story because I wasn't going to grind the same map for three hours to get Laharl to level 900. I picked up both the original Disgaea and Disgaea 3 on their release dates and never finished either of them. The most important part of an RPG, I think, is the story. And, if presented properly, you can enjoy it just as much as an LP as you could playing it yourself. Better, even, if it's horribly grindy or has clunky controls/mechanics. It's how I experienced NieR, for example. WONDERFUL story, very touching moments, but laced with Cavia hatred. ... You just have to find LPers that aren't obnoxious to watch/read/listen to. Bastion is one of my favorite games ever and the first game I point to if the "are games art?" topic comes up. Hell, I voiced my alt after Ruks because holy shit, he makes the game what it is. Also, Chip Cheezum's LP of MGR made me buy the game when it came out on Steam, hands-down. RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - Eses Fafa - 02-20-2015 Any of the Tales games after Vesperia. Those kept me occupied for weeks on end with each installment. I'd also say Phantasy Star Universe, that one was pretty beast though I exploited my way through the endgame by circling and kiting enemies with a laser cannon. RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - Kismet - 02-20-2015 Damn, I knew I was forgetting something. Definitely add Disgaea to my list. I stopped caring for the series after Disgaea 2 because I don't like the characters or plotlines of later installments. (I personally ignore D2 because it was just... It was so lackluster and kind of tacky. It felt more like a non-canonical spin-off than a proper sequel. Ugh.) I did also really enjoy the Rune Factory games in the Harvest Moon series. I didn't play 3 because I didn't like the characters all that much... and I skipped 4 because I didn't own a 3DS at the time (I can remedy that now that I have one). But man, did I enjoy 1 and 2! God Eater is another I'll tack on. Take Monster Hunter, make combat much faster paced, put it in a post-apocalyptic setting, and make it heavily story-focused. That's GE is a nutshell. RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - Dracyn - 02-20-2015 I'm an older gamer so Chrono Trigger and Earthbound rank in the top slots for favorite rpg. But I also like Okage: Shadow King. It was a very Tim burtonesqe style to it. The only mechanic I didn't like was that if Ari died in battle it was an instant game over. But the humor was awesome with several different romance lines (ala ff7) and you weren't the silent protagonist. You had responses to choose from and generally 2 of the three were guaranteed to piss someone off and the third normally pissed everyone off. RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - Kage - 02-20-2015 Not going to lie. I am absolutely overjoyed by the amount of Earthbound love there is :> ... I'm still hoping that I will see a true release in NA of Mother 3. On that note, I finally figured out why it is called the Mother series. RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - CrimsonMars - 02-20-2015 Disgaea is one srpg I like. ![]() RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - TheLastCandle - 02-20-2015 Back on PS1, I was obsessed with all the RPGs Working Designs and Atlus brought over.. but these three were like my Holy Trinity of Underrated RPGs. Alundra is more of a Zelda-like, and Brigandine is an SRPG similar in gameplay to Fire Emblem, but they count! RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - Kage - 02-20-2015 It's more tactical RPG but Vanguard Bandits (PS1) is great RE: Rpg other than Final Fantasy you like! - TheLastCandle - 02-20-2015 Vanguard Bandits is one my brother had. I enjoyed what I played of it, until I got to the end and found I hadn't raised my reputation with certain key members of my squad and got slaughtered, IIRC. It just soured me on playing it any further. I'll have to revisit it sometime. It -is- downloadable on PSN now. |
