Am I the only one who is not worried when I see Nat? O_O

You are the only one in Ul'dah without a guilty conscience apparently.
Nat is so tall and austere sometimes. Also, taller than Kage and maybe he shouldn't tease so much. >_>;

I hate you, but not as much as I hate myself right now.

RE: Paladins! - Kage - 02-11-2014

On Paladin note, I am curious how many are RPing as Sultansworn and actively doing duties in that respect?

Of those, how did they start to do so? As an established Sultansworn or one that was eventually initiated during RP?

RE: Paladins! - Khadan - 02-26-2014

I'm actually interested in the concept of the Ishgardian "Paladin" or perhaps we'll call it "Templar" to avoid confusion? That kind of fits my character's starting concept, anyway. A more "knightly" archetype than the Sultansworn bodyguards, etc. Of course there begs the question as to why these "Templar" types would be outside of Ishgard, etc. I'm sure circumstances would need to dictate and all that =P

Still, it's a rather interesting topic and one that warrants further discussion as a potential avenue for Gladiator/Paladin RP'rs =)

RE: Paladins! - Steel Wolf - 02-26-2014

An Ishgardian Templar would be a pretty nice spin on a Paladin, assuming one ignores or re-adjusts the Paladin's skills to suit whatever training the knights of Ishgard recieve versus the training offered to the Sultansworn or Free Paladins.

I could be wrong, though, but the more elite of the Ishgard knights would still be the Dragoons?  Not to assume that Ishgardians only enter battle with lances and nothing else ever...

As far as motivation...well, from what I've been able to glean of Ishgardian lore, it could work in any number of ways--a refugee escaping from the zealotry of the Holy See, a possible long patrolman who has been cleared to fight outside of the Coerthas region, though that seems a bit unlikely....maybe even an adventurer who took time studying the Ishgardian knights in battle and diligently studied their martial abilities.

Just kinda throwing ideas at the wall, seeing what sticks.  /shrug

I suck at this.

I do, though IC it was a recent thing, happening 6 years ago. I look at it from the point of view of someone who did not grow up in the US. In many nations (I will be using American terms for simplicity) the members of the Secret Service (Sultansworn) are often also members of the military (Immortal Flames), not to mention the local law enforcement (Brass Blades) also tend to be members of the military (Immortal Flames). This structure is most common in monarchies. So since there is no established structure published I go that way.

That gives me the RP latitude to be both a IM Captain and a Sultansworn, I simply have two sets of duties.

As to the question, do I do duties in RP, yes. Sometimes I'm doing my captain duties, doing my monday charity outside the Quicksand, or escorting people to places outside their level, exc. And sometimes I'm in full AF walking around the Chamber of Rule, keeping a eye out for trouble, keeping her highness safe.

RE: Paladins! - Kage - 02-26-2014

Thank you Erik for your response!

I think most people who've RP'd or talked with me have figured out that I really want Kage RP'd as a Paladin. However, I haven't completed the MSQ (only lvl 34 now) nor have I gotten into many of the side quests that seem to delve into the story of Ul'dah, its politics, the Sultanate, the Syndicate, and the Sultansworn.

I've read through the quest dialogue on xivdb(?) but I still feel like my knowledge is lacking.

So I figured that asking people who RP as paladins, free or Sultansworn, really would help me find my way about it as well.

(First, I'm not sure if Ishgardian sword-wielders are technically GLA or PLD. Let's go with PLD.)

You're definitely going to see more religious fanaticism among Ishgardian Knights than you would any other type of Paladin. They tend to be very single-minded, obsessed with dragons to the point of ignoring every other potential threat, so I'd imagine most of their combat techniques would be geared towards that. They might have a combat style more focused on jumps, upward thrusts, etc.

Depending on the individual, they might also place less focus on defensive strategies - killing a dragon is a feat that gets you personal recognition from the archbishop, and dying in battle against the Dravanians is the highest honour. They're indoctrinated to have less fear of death.

Ishgardians' focus would be on protecting their city as a whole, not their individual allies. There seems to be less connection between individuals in Ishgard; personal ties are cut very, very easily. So I'd imagine Ishgardian Knights feel less of a compulsion to protect their allies. (This is also highly subject to individual personality, though.)

Overall, I'm guessing the Ishgardians would use a more offensive style of combat.

If you're playing a character who is an ex-Ishgardian though, chances are they aren't as obsessed with "The Crusade" as their fellows are. They'd take a different outlook on life and combat.

No problem buddy. I sometimes run into resistance over my interpretation of the Flames and the other authorities in Thanalan, but this may just be from the majority of players being American and me being Dutch. Here is where I draw from: The Royal Netherlands Army.

Actually, Ishgardian "Templars" patrol outside of Coerthas all of the time. Mostly to track down heretics who attempt to flee the region, but could definitely pull off long patrol-type units. Some good insight on Ishgardian military practices was given in the 1.0 Archer Quest "The Foreboding Forest" which I'll link below:

"Dragoon" is simply the Title given to any Knight of Ishgard who proves to the Holy See that he/she has killed a dragon. You can be the best of the best of the best... with honors, but if you've never killed a dragon, you aren't a Dragoon. And not all Dragoons use lances, just the Azure Dragoon. There's a Dragoon with a sword and shield in Whitebrim.

Not 100% sure this is what you were referring to, but there is a brief overview of the Ul'dahn military structure here:

Immortal Flames Organization (Just scroll down a bit for the diagram.)

But to be clear, I've got no issue with how you've done your military background. I had to do a lot of research and a little interpretation of my own for Limsa Lominsa's military layout. By the way, our characters seem to have a lot in common, Erik!

Thank you, I am familiar with the overall structure laid out, the fuzzy part of the lore I refer to is the unanswered question of whether a Sultansworn can be an Immortal Flame at the same time. Or if a Brass Blade can be a Flame. Big Grin
