RE: Primal Slayers IC - Lament - 09-12-2013

I don't see what the problem is with not being "skilled" at RP (enough to pull off a concept "well")? We're not writers. We're not writing a book. We're having fun. It's a hobby. If someone has fun playing a character who is that powerful, that influential, that special, why not? You're basically judging people for not having fun the same way you do. You don't have to like what they like, so judging them for not liking what you like is pretty hypocritical.

Edit: This is why I defend not RPing with people if you disagree with how they conduct their RP. You don't have to interact. This isn't a group with set rules that someone is breaking. Unless someone is outright trolling or otherwise trying to purposefully disrupt your RP, let them do whatever they want. Do your own thing. RP with like-minded people. Problem solved.

That's a good point in regards to choosing not to acknowledge others' RP in your own canon, whether you ignore their RP or even if you RP with them for a bit out and about.

My post was coming from the idea of joining a RP community you expect to actively take part in.  You want to develop your story to blend and fit with others. If within your Free Company you want to play that your group are the ones who band together and pursued the main story to save the world, that's great. If you're joining a RP community (I say that broadly; could be linkshell, Free Company, coalition like this one in any game or avenue) that is taking a more grounded approach, you may want to be cautious on some of these things and feel out some ideas with your peers.

But generally speaking, I agree with Lament.  You can always ignore someone else's RP for your own (or your own group's) view of canon if it's not someone whose story will be intertwining frequently, etc.

Generally, it may be fun to think of your character as the awesome hero of all, but doing so also puts out some level of expectation, intentionally or not, that all others should RP treating you as such.  Essentially requesting other RPers to acknowledge you as more special than them and that steps on toes sometimes.  Some, of course, also really like playing the supporting role characters.

I'm hoping to build the Wardens of Light on Gilgamesh to have a lot of players who want the play out a supporting role in that they're shop keepers, crafters, and merchants who are vital sources of information even if they aren't actively in the field regularly risking their lives.

RE: Primal Slayers IC - Lament - 09-12-2013

I agree that it is more reasonable, when approaching a group (or starting one), to not do so expecting other people to be secondary to your character. Groups require, by default, some level of compromise between every member to work. I'd say they require rules and a certain degree of 'group headcanon', too, to prevent conflict between members down the road due to contradicting storylines and so forth, if your group is more story-driven.

If everyone in a group has an agreement to no super power, you can't join the group and expect them to break that rule just for you. Likewise, if your group is perfectly OK with you being important and having a bunch of powers, a new person can't just come in talking about how you're all wrong and so forth.

Basically, I agree. Groups thrive on agreement and/or compromise. Conflict kills them. If you're the guy constantly off doing your own thing and never bothering to actually try to respect the group dynamics, you're the guy who needs to go.

Did it. In 1.0. Just make sure that your character has the Echo, or they'll be tempered.

RE: Primal Slayers IC - Rinh Hallani - 09-13-2013

I think I wasn't as clear as I should have been earlier and also misunderstood Lament, Zyrusticae and others.

It seemed to me like some were saying you should just ignore people whose RP doesn't fit your head canon (because let's face it, the lore isn't always clear and sometimes it comes down to head canon) or RP in a different style, which I thought was unfair. I wasn't trying to say that you should make yourself uncomfortable, not by any means, nor reduce yourself to a prop to stroke the ego of an "all powerful hero". I merely meant I won't outright reject someone for small lore conflicts or beginner's mistakes. Obviously if the RP is extremely OTT, ridiculous, or upsets me in some way (for example, grimdark RP can make me uncomfortable), then yes, choosing not to RP with them is certainly an option.

As for using the game's story in your RP, I don't actually include any of it myself but I can understand why a new RPer might. Again, I wouldn't completely write them off for it but perhaps respond with scepticism and explain why OOC. Now if their RP revolved around the story and had nothing else to it, well, that's a different problem. Choosing not to RP with someone who merely boasts about killing Titan all the time isn't unreasonable, no.

Sorry if I jumped to conclusions. Blush I've just seen elitism destroy communities in the past and didn't want to see the same happen here.

Ehehe, you make a fair point though and it is probably the same opinion as my own. Although admittedly, if I could help it, I would likely avoid RP'ing with someone claiming to be a hero if I knew about it before they approached me out of sheer skepticism. I realise it is a bit presumptuous but I'd rather take the safe route and leave space open to others in the world that I may meet instead of closing off many roads and just accepting this one person as a hero and everyone else I meet as delusional or liars.

I AM a hero! Are you calling me a liar?!  I tell you, that ground squirrel was 20 fulms tall if it was an iln, with RAZOR SHARP claws and venom dripping from its teeth!  You say you faced a Primal? Pshaw! A PRIMAL would have cowered at this ground squirrel, I tell you!
