So what comes first in terms of time? - RiniKett - 11-06-2015

Another time thread...

Last time I asked how many years and such have passed, but this one is a little more...Blunt.

I'm confused over the chronological order of "Astral" and "Umbral".

To my understanding of how we pick our "nameday" in the character creation, the first Astral Moon comes before the first Umbral moon. I've always associated Astral coming first..But then I read this...

Timeline on the wiki

So, according to the timeline the Sixth Umbral Era occurred before the Sixth Astral Era. So Eras go backwards?

Is the wiki wrong? Or is the assumption that the First Astral Moon comes first wrong? Or are they both right and Square decided to make things backwardly complicated?

-Units of Measurement and Time Lore

In short, both orders are correct. The months pass from Astral to Umbral in accordance with Conjury's elemental wheel. Each of the six elements posseses Astral and Umbral aspects and is reflected in the months.

The Eras on the other hand are periods of time, alternating between Umbral eras, where mankind suffers, and Astral eras where mankind rises from its own ashes.

In Eorzean chronology, the world as we know it was formed over 10,000 years ago when gods roamed the world and life was just beginning to flourish. This was known as "The Time of the Twelve." Then mankind came to Eorzea and the gods blessed them. But eventually the gods began to war among themselves and used the life they had created to fight their battles. The result was the first calamity, after which a dark time in man's history followed, known as the 1st Umbral Era. When mankind recovered and their civilizations flourished once more, so began the 1st Astral Era, the "Dawn of Man."

Hope that helps clarify things! ^^
