Typing Limit - Spartle - 09-07-2010

I feel like an idiot posting this, but I really need to know and google has failed me. Maybe it was like this in XI and everyone's simply just use to it.. but has anyone had any problems with the character limit (think about 85!?) in the chat box? I've found myself on occasion typing to my friend only to be stopped mid-way through an adjective. Is it just something I'm going to have to get use to or .. maybe.. there's a work around? *hopeful*

Also, if someone says "use less adjectives" I will smack you!

Re: Typing Limit - Satisiun - 09-07-2010

Use less pronouns? :joker:

... but, no. Sadly, at the moment, there is neither a workaround, nor any comment from SE about potentially expanding the character limit, to my knowledge. It definitely was never this limited in FFXI, and that is even factoring in the addition of surnames in XIV.

Honestly, it's so bad I almost wonder if some ambitious tech. person (like the fine folks who made FFXI Windower) will try and come up with an external plug-in/box where you can type whatever you want, and it does the job of properly cutting it up in to bite-sized, half-Twitter pieces to send. Laugh

Going to make an addendum to my original but with pronouns now! *smack*

Ah, that's disappointing! Sad Here's hoping it'll just be a Beta thing! You'd assume that with having to type a character's full name into the chat box they'd give you more wiggle room.

Re: Typing Limit - Zyrusticae - 09-07-2010

It's very obviously a chatbox made with Japanese players in mind. Y'know, with the devs being Japanese and Japanese requiring fewer characters to form coherent sentences overall (with each symbol being either a noun or a syllable). It's rather unfortunate for us, but hopefully they will change it for the foreign playerbase. And hopefully they'll do the same with the horrible mouse lag. Tongue

Ah! That's a very good point. I didn't stop to think about that. Thank you for mentioning it, at least now I won't go around thinking the devs are out to get me!

I don't know.

I mean, I get what you're saying. It makes sense, too, since the Japanese do require fewer characters, as you said. But that begs the question, why make the character limit even smaller than it was in FFXI? The one in XI didn't have any complaints I can think of, so it's almost like trying to "fix" something that wasn't broken to begin with? Huh

Tack on the fact you must type a full name out, and it becomes even more frustrating. Yeah, nicknames are possible to save some characters, but only for people who are your friends. And the name thing goes for everyone, including the Japanese, language differences aside.

Re: Typing Limit - Zyrusticae - 09-07-2010

Well, in any case, whatever the reason for the low chat limit now it clearly needs to change, no question there.

I really have no idea why it'd be lower than it was in FFXI other than simple lack of hindsight.

Re: Typing Limit - Seraphine Felstar - 09-07-2010

I think this is very frustrating too. I guess we all just have to be a little patient and type things with two or three /tells instead of just one.

Re: Typing Limit - foxfirestorm - 09-07-2010

I must admit, the typing limit does annoy me as well, but I am pretty quick to adapt to any given circumstance, and since I now know that space + ctrl+r = Reply, I can live a bit easier with it. XD

I do wish they increase it, and maybe they will, if enough people complain about it on the general forms of the beta site. After all, during closed beta we talked about how cool it be to do /emotes and sit in a chair. >.>

Re: Typing Limit - Tagyr - 09-07-2010

I think it also has to do with the future PS3 users who may be working on a smaller television or might have trouble scrolling up and down massive amounts of text using a control. Though I've never used one myself it would seem quite difficult...

Amen!

For them to change it, there needs to be a significant enough portion of the playerbase requesting it, though.
Everyone with Beta Forum access... go!

I didn't think control + r worked at the moment.

It works along with all other ctrl+ shortcuts only if the chat bar is already open.

Re: Typing Limit - Tadir - 09-08-2010

Yeah, no fix.

And like was just said, for ctrl+r to work you have to open the chat box. So hit space or / then ctrl+r and there ya go.

What everyone else said. Wink
That is why I said above space + ctrl+r

Space is very important for all the commands mostly.. expect for Ctrl+t, and ctrl+p.. I don't think.. then again, I do this stuff without thinking I typically don't pay attention to what my hands are doing anymore. o_o

Yay for repetition training!
