Chocobo colors - Rosekitten - 08-31-2014

So I'm sure this has been questioned or answered in some other thread and I simply over looked it.. but this thought has been on my mind for a few days. Not 1005 sure on the lore behind dyes other than they are mentioned with the black chocobo chick that it was dyed. My mind is a bit stuck on past FF games where the colors stood for a type.

This being said how exactly do you handle colored chickens? Personally I was thinking of dying my own bird. My issue is that I use Zeek in my rp from time to time. So i was trying to wrap my head around either just writing it off as the chocobo always being that color or actually go the route of dying or feeding it certain things led up to the color change.

Personally dying an animal sounds a bit cruel to me but what do I know. I'm more leaning towards the latter after watching a documentary on island animals and one happened to be a type of bird that had feathers that were a vibrate red from the shellfish it ate.

But enough from me, just wanted to see what others had done (if anything) to handle their birds changing color. ^^

The lore on the feed is that they're favorite treats of chocobos and that they're known to change the color of their feathers. So, by the item descriptions, it's not so much that you're dipping your chocobo in dye as you're feeding them something they like and that alters their feathers as a side effect -- much like that bird you mention from the nature show. Of course, one could dye a chocobo other ways, I suppose; I have this vision of a lalafell on a stepstool pouring buckets of dye on their chocobo while whistling a work song. Smile

I'm currently dying L'yhta's chocobo red, and since she has basically no experience in animal husbandry beyond "chocobos need exercise, rest, and food," I'm going to have the change in color be quite a surprise to her. All she knows is that she was feeding Shera some new treats that (s)he liked, and her feathers changed when she moulted. Hilarity ensures. Smile

As a side note, while most chocobos are presumably male these days, I'm leaving it an open question whether L'yhta's chocobo is a gelded male or a female; certainly L'yhta hasn't bothered to check, doesn't remember if the breeder told her (she was just so excited to be able to have a chocobo), and just considers Shera female regardless.

I kinda assumed most if not all chocobos were male unless you had some sort of connection to land you a female. Going off what lore on breeding that I recall reading some time back.

Is that what the lore on the berries or whatever? I haven't had the time to really check and the FC I am in doesn't have a house so all of the features revolving around dying your chocobo is kind of locked to me. Not to mention the horror stories of the cost of the items used to change the color.. never bothered to look them up on the market.

I kinda get the vision of someone force feeding these poor birds till they get the color they want (i think someone made a small comic about that actually). Probably how we got fat chocobos. <3

Shera is most likely male from an OOC standpoint, but I'm playing the confusion (and L'yhta's strong desire not to dispel it) for laughs. Smile I just wanted to clarify the (s)he thing in my post.

The item descriptions are, like most chocobo feed, similar to that of this example for the Xelphatol Apple: "While typically avoided by the five races, and even the Ixal themselves, it is a favorite amongst chocobos, and is known to deepen the red hues of their feathers." (emphasis mine) As a side note, you can actually look up the item descriptions on XIVdb.

In terms of how much you have to feed... yeah. It's a lot. L'yhta's going to have to take her chocobo out for a lot of exercise after all those treats (13 apples for one color change!).

EDIT: FWIW, Mysterium doesn't use its garden much, so if anyone wants to send me some seeds, fertilizer, and soil, I'll grow the color-changing fruits for you and send them back, assuming we have space. You may want to send me a tell first before taking me up on that offer. Smile

I'd be lying if I said the thought hadn't occurred to her at some point... Smile

RE: Chocobo colors - Chika Ito - 08-31-2014

I've out of character dyed my Chocobo white. Here is how I am playing it off in character;

Chika is a mother to four kids, and sometimes with owning a business keeping track of the kids can become a little difficult. She has Nessa to help her, but the twins (who are seven) can be a bit of a handful. During their chores Chika's personal stable, that she has on her property for Runt (her Desert Yellow Chocobo) and Ryker (her Coeurl), they 'accidentally' over fed Runt. He ended up becoming very obese due to the amount of over feedings. Since Runt is so large now, and Chika has to work on getting him to lose weight, she is in the market for a new Chocobo.

That is when she comes across Sterre (meaning 'star' in Dutch). I have yet to figure out a mini-arc for her to obtain the white Chocobo, but it is a good way to suddenly explain how the plumage changed.

Fury has always been red IC, he is the mascot of the FC after all. The only difference now is he matches OOC now.

RE: Chocobo colors - Zoetrooper - 08-31-2014

There are actually birds that change feather colours due to diet. Quite notably flamingos, they get their pink hue from the shrimp and plankton they eat and if not fed properly in captivity they can lose their colours. I like that they put in the colour changing fruits, it makes a great deal of sense to me personally.

I apologize if this has been mentioned already but I am at work and skimmed through. : p

RE: Chocobo colors - LiadansWhisper - 08-31-2014

Liadan's Chocobo, Courageous, is just white.  I was quibbling for a while between brown and white, since I happen to think a deep brown color is gorgeous on a horse and figured it would be amazing on a choco.  ^_^  I wanted to stick with more "natural" colors that made sense to me.

I've just always figured there were variations of colors in the breed, since there are size differences and temperment differences, as well.  Desert Yellow may be the standard, but with a domesticated animal, you're going to find coat variations during the breeding process.
