What's all the clutter for? - Cercil - 12-31-2014

I seem to have a very strange tendency to have my characters hoard things. To the point where sometimes, some of their entire rooms are just filled with all kinds of things! But they always have a reason for it, ridiculous or not. But I'm wondering, are there any other characters out there who collect things? Like, maybe to an EXTREME amount or not so extreme, but why do you think some characters to do this? Is it really just hoarding? Are they so glued to their studies that they just keep collecting and collecting more books until their entire closet is filled with nothing but tombs? Or maybe they have a problem with hoarding, to a psychological extent?

Cercil is a scholar but she's only a little messy with some books. Her desk is a little cluttered, but she collects some magic stuff for reference.

Chesparaux (I'll just call him Chespar, he's my Duskwight Elezen healer/WM) on the other hand, hoards like a squirrel hoards their nuts in trees. He has crap EVERYWHERE and yet he still makes use of it all. It's all books, medical devices, probably some sort of narcotic to keep his insomnia up.

So, I guess this a little weird of a question - but does your character have any strange hobbies or tendencies that makes them hoard or collect things? What for? And how does it affect their lives? (If at all, I mean if like - you're at Chespar's level where his entire home is a mess of things and it makes guests wary.)

And I made a poll for fun!

Well, once A'zireena gets a home, it'll be slightly cluttered. She often gets distracted by something else, and will put down whatever she WAS fascinated with, and forget it was there... This leads to funny things with the clumsy Miqo'te. My other character is... She collects things, but it's rather organized.

Neither of my two most played characters have it in them to be hoarders. Nailah barely knows how to have a room, after spending a decade or so on the roads living out of a backpack. Thala'to is still young, and the concept of living on his own and owning his own things is still very new and he doesn't seem overly materialistic. Down the line he might develop more of such tendencies, though ^^

Kara's inn room is an exercise in organized chaos. It's messy to anyone who doesn't understand her method. However... she keeps very little of her stuff (and she has a LOT of stuff) in her room. She has caches/stashes spread out all over Thanalan (and even two in the Shroud), and she has forgotten where some of the smaller ones are and what they contained.

She's a squirrel that not only has more nuts than she knows what to do with, she's forgotten where some of them are.

Be careful in L'yhta's apartment -- some of those are load-bearing books! Smile

Seriously, though, the 50 item limit keeps me from cluttering her room as much as I'd like to. She's terribly messy since moving to Limsa Lominsa, as she has no family or tribe to keep her in line. Things have somewhat improved with her Very Good Friend helping to keep the apartment clean and her retainers desperately trying to keep up with and organize everything she finds, but in general, she collects a lot of stuff and thinks nothing of leaving it wherever is convenient at the time.
