Some questions regarding FFXIV RP. - Shadow Master - 01-05-2015
Greets to all.
I tried playing FFXIV a while back, but the lack of world PvP and various other features didn't appeal to me at the time, as I'm a long time WoW player, and Ultima Online player before that.
However, WoW has turned into a bland, boring waste of time, so I'm now going to be hopping back into FFXIV with a friend to play it basically as a co-op game.
Just have a few questions.
1. Does the game have word bubbles now?
From what I recall, it didn't have them back when A Realm Reborn was first released? Unless I was being blind, which is a distinct possibility.
2. If there are no word bubbles, how do you RP comfortably? Are there addons?
3. Is there dueling in the game?
Meaning, can you challenge other player characters to duels (/duel, etc.) outside of designated PvP instances? I can't seem to remember such a feature existing, so figured I'd ask.
4. What's the FFXIV RP community's general approach to settling in-character conflicts?
There's nothing I despise in WoW's RP community quite as much as when players use emotes and/or dice rolls to RP combat instead of... actually using the combat mechanics the game provides. Is that something common in FFXIV? Or do people generally resort to the game's combat mechanics?
5. On the same note as the previous question, is it possible to setup RP in PvP?
Or is all PvP restricted to strictly controlled PvP instances akin to battlegrounds, with timers/lack of chat channels/other restrictions?
I think that's about it. Hope someone can find the time to share their knowledge so I don't go in blind and/or with overly raised expectations.

I haven't done much PvP in this game, but I don't think RP is viable in it. It's all battlegrounds stuff like you guessed. This game never had much of a focus on PvP in general.

Nope!

Nope! Most people use a comination of the search message feature to tag themselves as an RPer, and/or this site and the accompanying wiki. It's not as simple as MyRP or anything, of course, but I certainly wouldn't say it's uncomfortable.
3. Is there dueling in the game?
No and yes. No, there's no simple way to do it, and it's pretty impossible to really do it in any way condusive to RPing, but you can reliably get the same 8 players together to fight if you queue for Wolves' Den at the same time.
4. What's the FFXIV RP community's general approach to settling in-character conflicts?
Most people talk it out OoCly or just let the IC play itself out. I don't seem to notice a whole lot of conflicts revolving around this. Most people are totally willing to lose or win, depending on the situation. Some people do use dice rolls, but I don't believe that it's relied upon very heavily.

Not even slightly, see above. It's all instanced, and on timers. If you were able to get 8 people together and wanted to queue for Wolves' Den as two seperate parties, in MIGHT work. But that's a big MIGHT.
RE: Some questions regarding FFXIV RP. - Steel Wolf - 01-05-2015
Most PvP I've seen is handled in dice-roll websites like rolz.org being a primary. The best RPvP that's out there in terms of size and participation is the Grindstone, a weekly event that happens out in Thanalan. Again, though, conflicts are handled via dice rolls and actions are typed out in response to roll resolutions. I'm sure someone else who's actually participated in a Grindstone can elaborate.
If your focus is PvP-based, or duel-based, I'm sorry to report that this still is very much not your game. There is a PvP thing, but it is a very controlled environment and doesn't appear to be terribly ideal for RP purposes. :c
