Well it seems like my lack of seeing much action/adventure RP out there may be due to the fact that it seems to be mostly done by FCs with insular plots. Makes sense I guess.

I was starting to wonder if most people were simply not into that sort of RP. However, seems plenty are! I've started a Task Board project with my FC to give members more adventurous stuff to do, and I've been brainstorming a Twelveswood plot for a month. I planned to use an LS as the foundation for that plot instead of limiting it to only my FC. It looks like I should follow through with that, and maybe throw in some IC dungeons.

I think it's easier to organize and run on a FC level, tbh. I distinctly recall plenty of folks, myself included, burning out on community-open server-wide action/adventure plots.

Wasn't the poisoned wells of Ul'dah thing one of those? And that caused a lot of conflict since it was "forcing a situation" on non-participants or something? I wasn't there for it, but I vaguely remember hearing something along those lines in a later thread for another city-wide RP event...

I'd rather not get into it, but the short answer is yes. The slightly less short answer is that most of the people complaining weren't even the ones participating and having fun. Something something learn to bubble.

We had other plots though. One involving a terrorist attack on Ul'dah that was foiled, and another featuring some ridiculously over-the-top, lore-breaking recurring-villains-of-90s-action-cartoons. Long story short, people burn out on really big action-adventure plots. Organizing them can be a pain, and each scene tends to run really long, as well.

Agreed.

One of the problems with plots that are community-wide is that our community has some pretty wide views on what the feel of the setting is, and action/adventure plots bring those differences into stark relief. Some feel that the setting of XIV is a lot like Exalted or FF7, with Comic Logic balancing Garleans with guns against agile swordswomen and powerful magi. Others feel that the setting is a lot lower power, with adventurers being matched by mundane beasts in the Twelveswood and Garlean vanguards able to cut down entire regiments. Wherever the "true" line is (if one can even claim there is such a thing Smile ), action/adventure plots that are open to all end up making these differences in opinion extremely obvious, since the first fight could have one mage opening with a fireball while the archer nearby cowers in fear -- and OOCly grumbles that they're largely superfluous because they play someone who's rank and file, compared to that wizard over there. The wizard player wonders why the archer isn't doing Legolas-style backflips and arrow stabs and shooting bad guys right through their eyes, and grumbles OOCly that they're not contributing to the plot's advancement.

That's even before you get into the issues of mass consent and world changes that Gegenji points out. If the plot is going to have large scope and high impact to feel epic, those who aren't involved may take issue with the fact that the setting is being modified or threatened without their consent or the actions of the devs. (EDIT: Note, I'm not saying that's what happened in the referenced plot!)

In an FC, you already have a group of people who are on the same page regarding the power level of the setting, and you can keep the plot from leaking out. So, neither of these issues exist. That's why I usually recommend these plots keep to FCs, LSes, or at the very least a group of people who all sign up and agree to the power level and rules (Dogberry's primal fights and the Grindstone are great examples of this).

Action probably works best when everyone is on the same page, as well.  I don't know that FC-organized has to be the case, but I think within a well defined group you'll have a better chance of finding something to be pleasant and enjoyable, rather than frustrating and tedious Smile

This, which is why I said "FC level" as opposed to "in a FC".

Small groups of folks all on the same page, as Wizard said.

Well I was replying to Kiht as well.. you hadn't really drawn the distinction clearly, and Freelance hadn't posted yet! :-D

Yup, a lot of people (Including myself) take issue with trying to remake the world without the consent of other roleplayers and the devs. It's exerting far, far too much control than any one player or group should ever have - which is why community run plots are a little harder. You say "Ul'dah was destroyed because my group said so!" and it's gonna cause problems.

BUT even in FCs, I think it's good for leaders and GMs to be really careful about screwing with the world too (Unless they rp in a bubble, obviously, which some RP groups do). Same rules apply, no one person/group gets to remake the world.

That being said, it's really just easier to run FC action/adventure plots. We do have people from outside the group who join, but they have also agreed to the same rules as my FC. Everyone in my FC has to go through a lore compliance process and their are certain rules in place that we follow completely (For villains and PCs alike) and make the PCs feel safe (IE the villains not being allowed to ever kill a PC without consent). It's easier because we all agree to said rules, while people outside of the FC may not. Plus, we have an LS, a Skype channel, and a secret forum on the website for the Storytelling team just to keep track of everything thats going on - and even with 6 of us it can feel daunting to guide 40-50 people. I can't even imagine trying to do in on a server scale and EVERYONE agreeing to the standards, practices, GMs, and playerbase itself.

just... thinking about it makes me cry a little.

Echoing what most folk have said and saying that I find most of my adventure/action RP to be within Free Company due to the scheduling/organisation aspect of it all.

With that said, though, my latest character is an Adventurer through and through.

I'm aiming to spice up my random walk-up RP a tad by dragging willing adventurers from the Adventurer guilds on a mini adventure! Nothing fancy, just some RP out in the wild searching for stuff. So if folks are interested, let me know and I'd like to hunt you down.

I've only done two attempts so far, both starting in the Quicksand, but I like to think both have gone down well! And where else would you look for folks to help on an adventure but the Adventurer's Guild?

Admittedly adventure RP is one of my favourite kinds, so I'm a little bias when I say I don't think I get enough.

Edit: Wow late posting makes me use a ton of exclamation marks.
