I have recently had newfound interest in this game and I am at this very moment reinstalling it to my computer. Being a roleplayer, I seek out RP in any of the MMO's I play, and the reason I lost interest in FF14 back in the day was because I could never find any RP!

So I am interested to hear how the RP is on the two servers, Balmung and Gilgamesh. Is there any active RP around? Any good RP linkshells I could join?

I plan on starting anew on a whole new character when the game is done patching, so I'm going to do some levelling at first, however, I hope to find you guys online and have some fun RP with you! Big Grin

There is RP around, but beware.Â There are those who choose to RP and not have consequences for their actions, which can make trying to RP with them rather mind boggling when it comes from a lore perspective.Â I feel that those who choose not to have consequences for their actions makes the entire story of their character pointless, and makes it difficult to RP in general.Â When it comes to a story, a character must have positives and negatives, and each of those should have some sort of consequence, good or bad (including losing standing with their supposed faction, if necessary).Â When people choose to avoid it, they lose the spin that their character brings, and become a Mary Sue, being little more than good conversation.Â This is a problem with MMO RP as a whole, but it is starting to get more prevalent in XIV.

There is good RP around, and good RPers as well, but be selective if you care about consistency within the lore.Â I've seen too much lore dodging lately, so I've been choosing to RP with a select few friends.

RP is mainly centered around The Waking Sands of Ul'dah in Balmung, and there are linkshells dedicated to roleplay within Limsa Lominsa, though I'm not sure what RP there is in Gridania.Â If you choose to RP in Balmung, feel free to send a tell my way if you got questions or just wish to RP.

Coming from Gilgamesh, yes, there's RP about. Not as much as the early days but there's FC's and LS's going strong with plenty of people to RP with. But then there's fewer players now than there were in the early days in the usual tapering off of MMO's...heck, the infamous launch of the game, you were lucky to register a character, let alone log in. The community is still large. Some people server jump, I know some from Gilgamesh have gone to Balmung and likewise some have come from Balmung to Gilgamesh. From what I understand the communities on either side are different and may suit different people differently. I know Balmung was the original unofficial RP server and Gilgamesh was something decided by the community as a non-Legacy RP server. The differences? I have no experience of Balmung so I wouldn't really be able to say with any level of fairness.

In terms of quality, I've never really had a bad RP experience. In the early days there were trolls but the server pretty much accepts there's RPers and leaves them to their own devices. Still, there is something satisfying about watching a troll try too hard and then get really frustrated you're not taking bait, they get desperate for attention.

There's also occasional events going on, which get announced here.

Our FC has been around since BETA and we still have strong RPers and have a good time with RP. I don't see tavern RP as much as I used to, but there are RP neighbourhoods, particularly with the introduction of housing. In our housing neighbourhood there's 4 RP FC's. However, we're mostly story arc based and as pirates we do jobs and are very rarely found in a single spot - our house is pretty much a base for discussing illegal activities...The Maelstrom discovered our activities and found us to be too suspicious, so we built a house in Ul'dah and we're safe for the time being.

I think the only sad thing about RP and this game is that there's no real dedicated RP servers, so it relies on us as a community to smack heads together and be the masters of our own communities and folks who would normally join an RP server to RP may not necessarily realise the game has an RP community and not join a server with RP on it. That said, strong communities have been built and I am having a lot of fun as an RPer in this game and I love the lore to pieces, whilst I may not be a lore Nazi, I am happy to point people in the right direction (mistakes happen and people can be new to lore or may misinterpret something). None of my FC mates make me cringe, everybody's got a well formed character and are a great bunch.

I'm completely brand-new myself, but I found that posting here had me already chatting OOC with some pretty nice people, and as soon as I found an event and began to RP, I ended up in a Free Company I've enjoyed thus far!

So, like most people, my experiences are obviously only indicative to my own experience, but I'd say that there's definitely RP and RP opportunities out there! Heck, I got walk-up when I was OOC and levelling, something I haven't experienced since the first few weeks of an RP server opening on Warcraft, years back.

Looking over the forums when I was trying to figure out which server to go with, it seems that there's personal differences for each experience on either Balmung or Gilgamesh, so I'd recommend trying each to see which server you prefer! Big Grin

It seems like both Gilgamesh and Balmung are closed off for new characters, but I was lucky to still have my old characters on Gilgamesh, so that is where I am atm.

However, if you say that Balmung is the place to go, then I'll just keep trying to make a character there. ^^

Server opens up to new players at odd hours. So if you want to give Balmung a try, keep at it! You will get in soon enough.

As for my own personal experience with RP in Balmung, it's been overall positive. I attribute it partly to luck, I just randomly ran into people who were good RPers and joined an FC that encourage storytelling and arcs, and I also proactively sought out people that I saw on RPC to play with them.

So persistence, patience, and a little bit of luck, I think you will find some good RP in either both Gilgamesh or Balmung.

Yay, I'm glad you had a character already! That makes it easier considering the population size.

But if you ever do want to switch servers, if you camp out patiently and check every set time (4am, 8am, 1pm, 6pm, 11pm) to see if the servers are full, you can probably get in where you'd like! It was a 4am window that worked for me for Balmung. Big Grin

Â And it's easy, too, because you can do it from the launcher ( News > "Regarding Character Creation Restrictions" ) and check to see if creation is open!
