How would you feel about them telling other characters? I mean, OOC, of course. Obviously you'd probably be upset IC, but I mean as far as your relation with that person out of character. It's not something I've ever seen before.

I'm talking something huge. Like, say you murdered somebody, and someone else found out, so they immediately started spreading rumors to other characters. Personally, I wouldn't mind. I think it's just a part of the realism, you know? But I'd like to know how others would feel in that situation.

I have zero issue with it.

It's happened to me on occasion (not in XIV, but in CoX and I think in EQ), and yeah, the secrets were pretty big. If the character came about the information ICly, then that's the consequence of having a character with secrets. Smile In fact, the play of keeping and telling secrets is an interesting way to spawn some conflict RP. The way I see it, telling a secret is an IC action with potential IC consequences; spreading rumours once you know a secret is the same thing. In short, it's an IC problem with an IC solution, IMO.

Of course, if the person metagamed the secret, I wouldn't be terribly pleased with their behavior.

It depends on how it was 'found out'. If it was found out legitimately ICly, I'd have to roll with it. OOCly, if it was something I didn't want found out quite yet I'd be a little peeved.. mostly at myself, because I obviously didn't do a good job keeping the information hidden. If I suspected metagaming/Batman Logic, it'd be a major problem OOCly. Especially if the information was being spread around. I've never had it happen before where I wasn't able to perform some sort of immediate damage control.

There's a person with my RP group in another game... he's about as sharp as a cotton ball and he's got a bad habit of lurking nearby and saying he's not IC, then turning around and using information he picked up during his lurking. Thankfully the rest of the group is quick to discard when someone calls him out on it, but it's still a distraction/disruption to have to stop and explain to him every time that he's using information that he shouldn't have. We're a small group, so even if we don't catch right away what he's doing, damage control is very quick... I'd hate to have to watch out for that sort of behaviour in a larger community setting.

I'd only ever pull something like that to the OOC realm if it was a case of metagaming, or something where I strongly feel that something is being forced down on my character which would have required my OOC acceptance first because of how it affects the day-to-day RP, for example inventing a false secret to spread around for ill-intended purposes - but I stress that this would have to be of some magnitude before I would react on it.

If they learn IC, and they tell others IC, that's fine. Sometimes it can derail plots, but it happens and sometimes it ends up being more fun going with the flow of things. But I don't like when people metagame their characters finding out my character's secrets, and I don't like when people spread my character's secrets OOC, because I generally like to keep a lot of my character's IC secrets as private knowledge OOC as well, because it helps avoid metagaming and also because it's fun to have unexpected twists and turns in the plotline to throw a curveball at whoever I'm RPing with.

If a character learns a secret about mine, I hope it's IC and not "I know this OOC, so I'm playing it as if (character) knows, beceause Reasons"

If it's IC, I think it affords a lot of unique opportunities for story telling! Do they become an accomplice? Do they try and leverage it over the other? Do they flat out blast it to everyone the character knows?

OOC, I think it'd depend on what stories I was telling that might be endangered by it, but likely I'd grit my teeth, swear a lot, and try and make both stories work.

I feel the same as what many people have already said here.  IC finding out and telling is fine, though I would actually be rather interested OOCly if it were happening, as my character and those he's associated with deal in information trade.  It may shift around some 'background events' in an interesting way that might lead to some neat (though certainly conflicty) rp, so I'd like to keep track of where it ends up going.  But by all means, if my character lets something slip, and it's in-character to betray that, go for it~

---

Though if it were found out OOCly only and spread ICly (without my permission), I wouldn't be very happy about it.  Again, somewhat for the above reasons; information, especially secrets and less-known knowledge are really important and pivotal to my character and his clan.  Depending on what's known they will react accordingly which could have a major impact on my character in a way I might not be willing to go through with, if ICly there was no way said secret could have gotten out. (as in he never actually spoke it to anyone, etc.)  If this happened, I'd attempt to contact the person OOCly who was spreading it, ask them how their character knew about the 'secret' ICly, and who they told.  If it isn't viable (or isn't actually based on something that happened, and was taken, say, from my character's journal on an ooc level) I'd ask them to retcon, add in a measure of doubt (such as 'wouldn't it be funny if [secret]?') or at least give me the people who they told, so I could explain it to them.  Mostly because I'd probably try to ignore it, and let them know the source was OOC info only.  At least if I wasn't willing to have the mess unfold ICly that would otherwise unfold.

Otherwise, I would grudgingly try to make it work, but probably be pretty wary of playing with someone unwilling to bend on their mistake / separate IC and OOC in the future.

I've actually had this happen before in both minor (where it was resolved quickly) and much more major ways, and in the latter, it had.. really unfortunate consequences.  As in 'Corrupt DMs using the information to give to other characters on an 'opposing side', and force certain characters off the server that they had OOC grudges on, yet broke no rules, thus couldn't be confronted about it OOCly.  So they took OOC problems into IC instead.' kind of nasty.  Basically bending a plot around the metagamed info in my character's journal in order to get some other people kicked out of a game in what would appear to anyone else as a 'purely IC consequence'.  It wasn't at all purely IC.  So in major part to this, I tend to get a bit severe when it comes to that kind of meta-gaming, because boy, do I not want to deal with that sort of drama again.  8|

That's metagaming. If they end up spreading it in character with or without my permission, I'd get mad.
