Literally... About the transition between day and night. I feel like before I saw a post concerning night and day and when to regard such as such in role play because it goes by so fast. Well recently I was thinking. Isn't it possible for multiple passing's of the sun to go by before we get physically tired. So do we really need relate Eorzea to our real time cycle? Think like how on other planets days will go by much faster and much shorter. So that does not change our natural need to sleep and it does not even change what could be considered a day time wise. A day could be the passing of multiple suns within a certain time frame. I am probably horrible at explaining this heh... But it was just a thought. Because when you RP and you look up at the night sky I think you should see the night sky instead of having to believe it is day because your conversation started when it was day...

For a planet to rotate as fast as it would need to in order to have the day lengths "Eorzea time" uses... well, suffice to say, we would not see the kind of life (if any life) on the planet that we do now.

I'm afraid such a fast rotation of Hydaelyn doesn't make sense on a physical scale. Such a high speed would have drastic changes on the winds, for example. I'll poke a friend of mine who's an astrophysicist so he can do the math for me (I'm lazy and bad at maths).
But besides that, there's nothing in lore determining that Eorzeans stay awake for various cycles of daylight before going to bed. Since the simplest solution is the most probable, it's more likely that this is just a gameplay representation for aesthetics (so that people that log in at night aren't doomed to have only a night-time game world) and for certain mechanics (I think weather and daytime affect fishing in some way). |

Aww... Well it was just an idea. I mean it is a fantasy world. But I just wanted to see more professional opinions.

The fastest planets in our solar system are actually the biggest. The fastest rotating planet we know of is Jupiter which is also the largest. A full rotation is about 9~ hours. Unless Eorzea is ten times bigger than Jupiter it would not have the gravity to support such a fast rotation speed.Â
Because Jupiter is so fast, it has changed the very shape of its planet, causing it to be slightly oblong instead of spherical. |

In any case, with Miqo'te differentiated by when they sleep, it wouldn't make sense for them to be awake for a couple of earth-hours at a time. They'd never get anything done!

Eorzean Time is linked to the "disciples of the Land" mechanics since some materials and fishs can only be retriven at a specific Eorzean Hour. So I think the choice they made is more about allowing people to gather material at any hour (imagine if you had to wake up at 3 AM every day to get your 6 crawler cocoon ?) and so being able to craft the ★ and ★★ stuff without needing to wait a week for each piece than any RP linked reason. Compressed time is a gameplay mechanic used in a lot of sandbox titles such as The Elder Scrolls titles, the newer Fallout games and especially in Simcity-type games. The gameplay kind of relies upon time passing, but nobody wants to wait around for a full actual day to get something done... so...
FFXIV has the same compression ratio as FFXI did; it's 12:1, so an Eorzean day is two hours. I remember when I started playing WoW after leaving FFXI the first time and being really bummed out that it would always be nighttime in-game when I played, because I always played after work, on CST, while playing on an EST server. attractive enmity device

I think using astrophysics and such explaining that the planet would not function properly if it were spinning so fast that the days were actually as short as they are represented in game is kind of silly.
This is a fantasy game. We're calling down meteors from the sky, fighting dragons and slimes and zombies. We're riding chicken horses. Why complicate something with such highly scientific real world rules when there is a perfectly reasonable way to wave off something like that: Magical fantasy world. Kate Lander

True enough. I tend to overlook the day/night cycle beyond little comments my character might make regarding a particular sunrise, constellation, etc. It never becomes a focal point of RP because it is rather awkward. I was simply giving an alternative answer to the "But SCIENCE!" excuses.
