Basically...I'm wondering what the difference between English and Japanese naming conventions is.

If you mean for the game itself, the naming conventions for each respective race are identical, regardless of localization. The lore boards on the office forums have threads for each, and there are some websites out there that will make a "lore-based" name for you.

In the game? There isn't one, the conventions for naming are the same in English and Japanese as far as I'm aware. The first namingway site for FFXIV came out was Japanese, which gave us the same exact names that the English conventions confirmed.
