Thought I would post this for those interested. Humble Bundle allows you to purchase FFXIV: ARR for $4. If you then make a new Mogstation account and recruit a friend it, voila. You have 15 gold chocobo feathers.

I can't remember since it's been a while since I recruited someone, but I'm pretty sure that they have to pay for the first $15 month before you get any feathers.

The person recruited has to pay for a subscription before they receive any items. The recruiter gets them immediately. I just tested it myself a few hours ago and got the five feathers when I logged on. ^^
